50 Caliber means that the length of the gun is 50 times the caliber of the shell, so if its a 16 in (406mm) shell, multiple that by 50, and the gun barrel is 66 ft 8in (20.32m) long

KriegsMeister27 also American rifle caliber ammo is in relation to 1 inch. so an m2 Browning 50 cal bullet is half an inch in diameter, a 30 cal is .3 or 1/3 of an inch, .308, .227, so on n so forth. no relation to barrel length at all. same name different meaning

KriegsMeister27 As a note for those who care (and don't already know this), the US made several different 16" naval guns. The Mark 6's used by the preceding South Carolina and North Carolina class ships were 45 caliber. The reason the caliber is relevant is because the longer the shell stays in the barrel, the longer the propellant has to push it and therefore the faster the shell is moving when it gets out. The shells put out by the Mark 7s used by the Iowas had a max muzzle velocity of ~2,700 ft/s as compared to the ~2,300 for the Mark 6's. So the 7s had greater range, plus if they'd ever been used in an up-close fight they'd hit harder.
The Iowa is easily the best battleship of all time. Not the biggest. The best. In my opinion of course.

BlackXero X Not sure, 460mm sounds awfully bad to be hit by in my humble opinion, pretty sure even if the HE missed and hit like half a metre from the hull it probably be so big of an explosion the shockwave would bend the hull armour of whatever poor BB is in its target.

This video right here..... It gave me the inspiration to become a gamer, even though phlydaily kinda sucked around when he crashed Iowa into the coast but still, this video is my favourite. By the way, this was my first ever KZread video that I ever saw, like when 7 years ago when I was 8 years old and USS Iowa has a special place in my heart. and phlydaily, if you are seeing this comment, thanks for the wonderful time playing the old world of warships.
Watched all WoW vids to date. Keep 'em coming!
Well played Phly. I can see you have improved your aim a lot.
The Iowas were decomissioned after every bigger war and recomissioned for the next conflict so they served from 1943 (?)-1946 from 1950-1956 again from 1967-70 and were modernized for the "Navy of 600 Ships" Programm of the Reagan Adminstration and were put on service in 1983 and reamaind so until 1991 finally in 2005 they were removed from the reserve. So they actually served just around 20 years .
@spindash64

They still served in an era where the people who originally built her were dead or pretty close. It's not number of battles she fought that's impressive, it's that she was still being used in wars 60 years after what was effectively the cultural singularity, where no one could ever hope predict past. I know she was obviously remodernized, but with a ship that old, it's still bizarre
I toured an Iowa class when I was little, the USS Wisconsin. It's the museum ship at Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia. HUGE ship!
I love your intros they're so epic :D
PhlyDaily 16'' 50 caliber means that the length of one of the Iowa's mark 7 main gun barrels is 50 times the diameter of the bore (406mm) or 68 feet long from breech to muzzle and weighed around 134 tons apiece. Love your videos man, keep it up :D
When you beated the yamato it was awesome. Its like when someone doesnt know how to do something and it is their last chance to shoot the ship before they die and that was you.If you werent thinking where to shoot then you would die.Good math and good memory of where to shoot. That was you phly. The iowa was awesome but you are more awesome.Even though the iowa had way less health you still manage to beat him without giving up.Good job

+Soren K Press account.
Caliber in naval gunnery means the ratio of barrel length to bore size. This means a 16in 50cal naval "rifle" (yes they were called rifles because they had a rifled barrel) means it had a bore size of 16in and a length of 50X15in. The longer the barrel, the more performance and accuracy you get out of it. This is why even though these guns were 2.1in smaller in bore length to the Yamato's 18.1, the Yamato only outranged the Iowas by less than 1000yds because the Yamato had 40 (ish, don't remember exact) caliber while the Iowas had full 50. The North Carolinas though had the older 16in 45Caliber, hence the difference in range
LOL, I love the Phly "woooooooooooooooooow." Hahahahaha it is awesome.
+PhlyDaily n artillery, Caliber is determined as length to width ration, the bigger the caliber, the longer the barrel in relation to its diameter
Yo Phly: a 16 inch gun as you know is a gun with a 16 inch bore diameter. The 50 Caliber part means that the gun barrel is 50 calibers long, IE 16 inches times 50, so it has a barrel 800 inches long.
I served on the NEW JERSEY BB-62 from 5/82-5/84 and the firepower is a sight to see. Great memories. nice graphics on this video.
and nice job on destroying Yamato's no. 1 turret at 11:36.
Just got an Iowa today. Love it.
i have watched a lot of vids of world of warships and play it quiet a bit. first time watching your vid, fkin hilarious, love your vid dude " dont go out there alone negato, wait for your shity team mate to come help u" i was rollin. plus sounded like u where havin a good time
Here;s a question for ya, any thought's on the American BB's having a better turn radius then same Tier Cruisers? I think it is until T9-T10 they all have 100-200 less turn radius than the IJN Cruisers.
I live in iowa and i am so proud that the 2 greatest ships (iowa and Des Moines) are named after my state
A 406mm/50 caliber gun means that it is a gun firing 406 mm shells through a barrel that is 50 times the length of the shells' diameters. So in that case: 406x50=20300, the barrels are roughly 20 meters long.
here is a good tip, the seconds that you see in scope count the time it takes for your shot to land on the spot you clicked on, before you fire, mentally imagine a shot, and count with the seconds and keep your eye on a water spot, and trail it until the ship passes over it (this acts as a hit by the time you count i.e 7 seconds, and within 7 seconds the ship passes that spot). Once you have counted the same number of seconds as stated in scope, you can be sure to have accurate shot.

+Gerard San Juan don't forget to factor in enemy dodging and stuff to adjust shots :D
amazing Intro also amazing because of Hans Zimmer music :)
beautiful video with sweet soundtrack.
That has to be pretty much the best service history any ship could ask for. Half a century in service, and rather than getting sunk or smelted, you get to be memorialized
50 caliber means the guns length is the caliber 406mmx50 which is 20.3 meters or 66.6ft. The longer the gun barrel, the faster the shell will fly. The more distance it can reach. Also higher accuracy.

The cool thing about all of the Iowa Class ships is that, even though they are currently decommissioned, in times of major war they can be recommissioned and put back into service almost immediately, hence why they are maintained as museum ships.
@pantherv2669

It would be costly to get their engines back up and running, but they could definitely be recommissioned despite being struck from the Naval Register. The Iowa class were the best built Battleships in history, they will pull through.

Prisoner of the Highway I know that would be freaking awesome haha! Plus I'm sure using the 16 inch guns for artillery strikes on land targets is way cheaper than Tomahawk missiles and such. That's why it sucks that they aren't in use today.
Hey Phily I haven't read all the comments so maybe someone has told you this already. The Iowa was the largest battleship ever constructed in the US Navy, and the Iowa currently is a museum I believe in San Francisco or Sacramento harbor. Free general tours to all persons in position of a valid Iowa ID, because well our tax dolor's paid to keep it from the scrap yard.
At that moment when you hit the island and there were a million aircraft coming at you, I honestly thought you were dead.
I wish the South Dakota class were a premium tier 8 BB, I visited the USS Massachusetts and it was awesome.
If you hit the magazine like in Battlestations does it explode
You and Yamato got so close the crew might as well have started opening fire with rifles and pistols!
beautiful intro, man!
Man I love the world of warships vids maan
That bit of the vid at 12:15 it's called crossing the t just means u can only use one set of guns where as he can use full broadside
Came here to drop some learnin' 'bout calibers as a measure of barrel length; was pleasantly surprised to find others had beat me to it
They were mothballed for a lot of those years. R Reagan brought them back out for reg service with some major upgrades including cruse missiles and anti air missiles.
Best Intro ever! :D LIKE
THE INTRO IS SO AMAZING 🤧😭
You remind me of the last battle in the movie BATTLESHIP
Can't wait for this game to go live it's going to be a blast.
My grandfather actually was on that ship. By that I mean he was in the army and he was repairing her that last time before she finally retired.
Fun fact, PHLY- The Iowas have to be kept in working order (even though they're museum ships) just in case they're needed, as we don't have much of a replacement for their type of firepower.
Fun fact: The Iowa was put back into frontline service during the Gulf War in 1992 because its 16in guns were more effective and cost less to bombard enemy positions than anything else in our arsenal at the time. It was officially retired in 1996, if memory serves. That means the Iowa class, from the time the keel was laid on the first ship until it was retired, served the US Navy for 58 years. In other words, it's possible that the grandchildren of the original sailors stationed on the Iowa could very well have enlisted and served tours literally feet from where grandpa stood.
How much longer will it take so everyone can get on it without preordering or such
The Iowa class was basically the South Dakota class expanded for more engine power so they could keep up with the fast carriers
I like your intro video it is awsome
PhlyDaily you know you can lock the rudder in place with q and e? so one does not have to keep the a and d key pushed the whole time
I've been on the USS New Jersey and it is incredible.
Phly the "50caliber" in the dimensions of the gun refers to the length I believe.
Phly, you ever come over to LA you can see and walk around in and on the name sake of the Iowa class, the USS Iowa in all its massive glory down at the harbor in San Pedro.
such a sick intro! :3
that air attack when phly's stuck in on land was EPIC
I heard the US ships are good brawlers, can you use the Montana as a very close range brawler or a sniper?
Best part about hes Videos is the Intro! :D
when you were shooting the des moines and one salvo landed in the water just ahead, the reason you didn't hit under the waterline is that it was so long range the angle is steep. at shallow angle (close range), those do count as hits.
Phly, look up the concept of plunging fire, I think that would help to explain why you're not penetrating some of your shots
When ya going to do the North Carolina
Hi phly !!! Iam new at war thunder and love the American fighters iam play the kittyhawk and aim really bad at this game so i wanna ground strike how can i do this with the kittyhawk so what guns i need ?
it be cool if the intro wiuld add a firing shot after it revives and the way we look at it is from inside the barrel to outside
Caliber in naval artillery is barrel length as a multiple of the gun bore. 406mm/50caliber means the barrel length was 20300mm or 20.3meters(@67 feet) from the breach. Longer barrel equates to higher velocity and generally more accurate fire. Combined with the centimeter band ranging radar on the Iowa, a gun duel between a Yamato and a Iowa would likely have ended badly for the Yamato. The Yamato did have heavier armor and shell weight but the higher velocity of the Iowa rounds would have balanced the armor difference. The Yamato's slightly longer range combined with its nearly equal speed would mean the Iowa would have been ranged before it could return fire. Iowa's greater manueverability and the spotter directed Japanese artillery would LIKELY have lead to minimal to no damage before she could return fire.
The airplane on the back is a sc-1 seahawk, my science teachers father flew one onboard the uss Alabama during WWII
The USS Iowa museum is right by my house they are kept in working order in case they are needed because they were refitted with some modern tech like Seawhizzes and cruisemissles
you got a little salty at 18:21 XD
super intro , super video ...... i love song ..... Hans Zimmer - Time
Dat second round doe so many shells flying so many ships Much ship many shells wow
the Iowa BB61 was first to sail and first in japan port in ww2 and saw most of the action was hit by land shore gun twice .
Best video yet!
Yep, I am subscribing because of that awesome intro
Each of the Iowa's guns were independent. Meaning each barrel fired independently from each other. You could have a sequential with all nine guns, instead of 3x3, it was 1x9. I wish that was implemented here.
Phly the Missouri was un-mothballed in the 90s to provide fire support for the first Gulf War and was refitted for Tomahawk missiles. Nearly a 50-year lifespan of combat use.
At least thats what my tour guide said on the Wisconsin, He pointed right to the artillery and said they're 50 cals.
Holy cow... the Iowa is awsome!
50 caliber means the guns were 50 times as long as their bore diameter. So the guns were 50 calibers long (800in)
Damn that ship is beautiful, cant wait for the south dakota
I think they should add the ability to control the port and starboard props independently from one another, because im sure that ship has two engines one port one starboard. when it comes to the situation where you just need to rotate the push and pull tactic. like when you tapped the island. I worked on a ship on lake Michigan that had to do a 180 to back into the dock. the only way to do that was the push with one prop and pull the other. made that 410 foot boat turn on a dime. i think it would help out big girls like the Iowa.
