World of Warships - First Look: Tier X French Destroyer Cassard

Here's our First Look at Tier X French destroyer Cassard. Cassard will be the top of the line in a new French torpedo-centric destroyer branch releasing soon. She's part Marceau, part Benham, and maybe a little bit Gearing. Let me take you on a tour around the ship and explain what I think is going on here, with the caveat that I can't talk about how these bizarro torpedoes actually work because I haven't played the ship yet (and couldn't say even if I had).

Main battery - 3x2 127 mm. Firing range - 13.9 km.
Maximum HE shell damage - 1900. HE shell armor penetration - 21 mm. Chance to cause fire - 7%. HE initial velocity - 808 m/s.
Maximum AP shell damage - 2450. AP initial velocity - 808 m/s.
Reload time - 3.5 s. 180 degree turn time - 10.0 s. Maximum dispersion - 119 m. Sigma - 2.00.
Depth charges:
Maximum damage - 3000.0. Number of charges - 2. Bombs in a charge - 6. Reload time - 40.0 s.
Torpedo tubes - 4x3 550 mm.
Maximum damage - 24267. Range - 13.5 km. Speed - 72 kt. Reload time - 120 s. Launcher 180 degree turn time - 7.2 s. Torpedo detectability - 1.5 km.
Maximum damage dealt until 8km.
AA defense: 3x2 127.0 mm., 4x1 20.0 mm., 3x2 57.0 mm.
AA defense short-range: continuous damage per second - 35, hit probability - 95 %, action zone - 2.0 km;
AA defense mid-range: continuous damage per second - 151, hit probability - 100 %, action zone - 3.8 km;
AA defense long-range: continuous damage per second - 63, hit probability - 100 %, action zone - 6.0 km;
Number of explosions in a salvo - 3, damage within an explosion - 1680, action zone 3.5 - 6.0 km.
Maximum speed - 34.0 kt. Turning circle radius - 610 m. Rudder shift time - 4.5 s. Surface detectability - 7.5 km. Air detectability - 3.8 km. Detectability after firing main guns in smoke - 3.1 km.
Available consumables:
Slot 1 - Damage Control Party (Duration time 5 s; Reload time 40 s; Equipment is unlimited)
Slot 2 - Emergency Engine Power (Duration time 60 s; Maximum speed +30%; Reload time 120 s; Charges 5)

    I think Cassard represents them trying to implement the historical doctrineal split that the Marine Nationale developed for its light forces where you had the torpillier which were designed to screen the battle line and used in the traditional torpedo wave attacks which would be Cassard, and then current line starting at Jaguar with the contre-torpillier which were essentially ultra-light cruisers designed to hunt down the Italian and German light forces and by longer ranging scouts

    I will never give them grief for adding real ships into the game, but IMHO they still have to have a role. I think I see what they are trying to do with this ship... my problem is that other ships already do it better. It feels like they could have found something different, or at least a different way to execute it.

    @SeaRaptor I'll reserve judgemental considering how wrong I was at least mid tiers about the Italian dd but I'm kinda with you. Maybe if they would have given them smoke generators it might feel better but then your straying into British territory with slow dds with ok guns and ok torpedoes with a large kit bag. I donno *shrugs*

    Just some fun trivia: Cassard was in fact real as part of the T47 class destroyers for France, and one of her sisters is a museum ship today (Also undergoing drydock maintenance as far as I know right now). Her name is Maillé-Brézé (D627)

    Back in the 13.4 Closed Test Dev blog they stated, "These torpedoes will lose damage based on distance traveled-they deal very high damage for the first 6 kilometers..." In Closed Test 3.5 Dev Blog for French Premium DDs they stated, "Researchable torpedo parameters changed. Distance until which torpedoes deal maximum damage increased: 6 to 7km." This was for T8. Full damage for T9 and T10 stated 7.5 and 8 respectively. FWIW, T9 Orage listed standard stock torpedoes in addition to the researchable. I don't think there's been further details published that expands on this or even if those statements still hold.

    Exactly my problem. What's the minimum torpedo damage (at maximum range)? Not stated anywhere.

    ​​​​​​​@@SeaRaptor it should be 16k at max distance for cassard according to Shiptools Although it's weird because the devs said during the announcement stream that the damage would be reduced by 60% so according to them it should be 9.7k at max range. I guess we'll have to wait for release to know who's right. Also the damage fall off doesnt seem to be entirely linear. Again, according to shiptools Cassard will start loosing damage from 8km up to 10.7km. From 10.7km onward, the damage will remain unchanged at the lowest alpha

    The Cassard has much better gun ballistics than Marceau. She gets more than a km in additional range and the ballistics look like she will be able to use that range. She might even work with range mod if that floats your boat. As for the torps, assume that when they reach max range they are reduced to doing the same damage as the weakest T10 torps, so 10k. Considering the torps' speed and stealth (and massively increased flood chance), that still makes this DD a very powerful hybrid. Built for torps she puts out a lot of DPM. Looking forward to trying this one out. Great video as always Raptor. 👍

    Gunboating with the second slowest destroyer at T10 without smoke doesnt seem to be a great idea to be honest. Its dpm isnt amazing either. At 195k HE dpm, you're barely above average. The gun angles are also complete trash so chasing/fleeing from a target will be that much harder In all honesty, Hayate just seem like a straight up better ship. Her torpedoes have almost the same alpha except they dont have any fall off. She also has a torpedo reload booster to compensate for the longer reload. Her guns are better, she has a smoke etc....

    ​@@Axel23410 I love Hayate, I think she is a great hybrid these days. But to say Cassard has average HE dpm is not accurate. She is not that much worse than Daring but she has way superior ballistics. So hitting stuff will be a lot easier and that counts for a lot. I agree the gun turret angles are atrocious, I had not looked into that, and that is definitely a concern. But I do think her French saturation mechanics will compensate for that at least in part. I am looking forward to trying it out. I am not even close to a DD main but I like a good hybrid and this one looks to me like it might have potential. WG also just announced buffs to this new line, some of which are quite impactful. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

    @@AllAhabNoMoby No. They just announced a nerf: Cassard's minimum range for the damage fall off on the torpedoes went from 8km to 7km. Also, yes. 195k HE dpm is average at tier 10. In fact if you compare all T10 DD damage output (including SAP and short fuse AP like druid), around 13 DDs (14 if you count Kleber's MBRB) have a better damage output than Cassard, out of 28 ships. This is a texbook definition of "average" Again, compare Cassard to Hayate: Hayate has better he dpm, she has a smoke, the same concealment, arguably better torpedoes, roughly the same mobility etc... The only real advantage Cassard has over Hayate is the special saturation. And I highly doubt this is enough to compensate for everything else. Especially the lack of smoke. Edit: Also Cassard's ballistics are not that much better than Daring. For example, at 12km Cassard has a 9.5s flight time while Darong has 9.9s. That's not a big difference.

    If Wargaming wanted us to play the F3 torps more often, they could have asked. Instead, they give us a whole new line to grind? Not sure how these are going to fit into the current meta.

    We on console have a commander that give us more damage the farthest away it goes, but this french DD is hella weird with it's torps

    Without the normal French speed, not having a smoke to get away seems questionable. If they´re not gong to make it fast, at least give it short British type smoke to at least get away when you open up with your guns. Otherwise you´ll be focused by everyone on the enemy team who can see you.

    The gimmick on this ship feels like it was added just for the sake of having a gimmick. Questionable benefit, more complicated to balance, ultimately probably won't add much to gameplay. But without some kind of gimmick there isn't enough unique about the line to set it apart from any other line. Still seems pretty mediocre on paper. Hoping they give the line a couple knots of speed during testing, or else they may be DOA.

    Oooh, new logo. Torpedo mechanic, the sub torp mechanic backwards? And an attempt to not have to use the torp switch mechanic of the Minegumo?😢 Wonder what torps the lower tier ships will get. Feels like WG is trying to compensate for accidentaly making the original French DDs good. Maybe like the Italian DDs, their gameplay is not indicated well by the stats and the high tier ships are not the best of the line. Guess it's going to be a scout then kite gameplay. A frenchman that can't run away? Will it get a Foreign Legion flag????

    I - think - i remember reading the minimum damage at max range is 14k, so basically you lose 10k linearly. But i'm not sure if i'm imagining things or not lol. Anyway, this line looks weird, looks like WG just tried to force gimmicks with stuff that didn't mesh well with them.

    the last few line were a bit meh imho. Commonwealth CLs/CAs. Upcoming FR Torp DD. EU Radar DDs with HE only (like why ???). I only hope that if and when the Dutch DDs come, out, they will make them good. Lesta RU is looking better vs WG here (except for p2w flag fiasko). Any thoughts chat ? Sadden that USS Johnston is out for gold only... :(

    The alternate EU DD branch I find to be just... enraging. Just WHY. WHY do those ships exist? HE only? Ugh. I am trying to grind the T8 and it feels so toothless.

    @@SeaRaptor that sort of fxp sponge tech tree line has been a while (looking at you Elbing and Jinan) so I suggest to skip t8 and 9 entirely and just get straight to Gdansk

    AA values have NOTHING to do with the actual guns on the ship. Don't believe WG staff if they claim otherwise. AA damage is purely based on balancing factors.

    I think cassard is supposed to be ideally played as a ita torp boat that prefers to headcharge and bomb bbs to oblivion with obscene amounts of damage if it can help it but still be able to threaten them from longer distances without the same amounts of damage. This idea shouldve been reserved for the italian dds imo as the slower speeds for the cassard is counterproductive to charging in but it can be a nice concept

    In theory, the emergency speed boost *ought* to allow for some hit-and-run tactics - just like Kleber can do - if played correctly around terrain. If the speed boost is on cooldown, though, no way do you have the speed to do it. This thing is just barely faster than an Iowa-class BB. A Georgia or Ohio will flat out-race you.
