I've always felt that the setting is your opportunity to establish the thesis of your narrative. The characters and other entities in the world are how you explore the anti-thesis and the synthesis of you narrative. If you're going to write in a cyberpunk setting you should ask yourself how it will enhance your narrative. Don't just do it for aesthetic purposes.

Best video ever! I’m going for a 1973 vibe. Never thought about the 70’s.

I'm writing a cyberpunk so done a fair bit of research on youtube, and reading most of the popular books in the genre. I have tried to think of original ideas includeing tech contemporary issues, so ther'es gig economy, genetic engineering, pandemic, climate change (of course), social media addiction, and some stuff on sexual harassment / abuse in the work place. Tech wise, my characters can "hack" minds by stealing from their dreams.. I think straight up hacking is pretty boring so my Charactes go in to a virtual world to get access codes, passwords, etc.. meaning I've added a bit of horror in there too as some memories are dark and disturbing, and characters have to navigate them, opening themselves up to potential trauma in the process. I defo borrowed (stole) ideas from Inception and Cyberpunk 2077 for this, but I just cant see how you can make hacking interesting without a big twist. Apart from all this I have tried to just write a fun and interesting story, with CP as the backdrop. Also, I wanted to shatter the evil asian stereotype, so my asians (thais) are the good guys, although moral ambiguity is important in this genre, so all the characters (good and bad) dont fit the mould easily. My MC is a drug dealer, for example, and half way through he has a big moral dilemma to contend with. The baddie works for big pharma, and while they literally kidnap homeless kids off the streets, their products save lives. There's a scene where the corpo baddie shows how he and the MC are not so difference. He does what he needs to do to ake the medicines (and money) to help others. (little does he know my MC has recorded the whole thing, and will show it on every billboard in the city.. but that's a reveal at the end). I'm excited by the story and realised how much I love this genre above all others. I'm from a poor urban background and witnesses a lot of CP shit growing up, so I had a bank of material to add in regards to poverty, crime, drugs, and other issues.

for alternate cyberpunk ideas such as corporats being the good guys or better choices among narrators world see example like Paycheck by Philip K. Dick. short but so cyberpunk without the usual "corp. bad" trope

Corporations are neither good or evil. They are amoral.. they do whatever they can to maximise profits for shareholders. I think most Cyberpunks go with the evil corpo trope, and it's a bit simplistic and over done. It would be more interesting (IMO) to show how corporations are not bad per se, but do what they can to make money as that's how the incentive structure was set up. In my story, the corpos are bastards, but I am trying (probably failing) to also show the positive side, such as the job creation, scholarships, and other good things they fund. In fact, the main baddie has a bit of a speech about it when the MC asks him why he is such a bastard.. he says something "Like you, I do what i need to do. Are we any different?"

@@mdaniels6311 job creation means nothing. Sweatshop workers technically have jobs. The other good stuff like scholarships are done for image purposes for good PR. And even then they’ll usually only help pay for business degrees to advance within the company so it’s mostly self serving. Capitalism prioritizes short term over literally everything else. So when it comes to polluting the planet or losing money a corporation has to pollute the planet. If it comes to orchestrating some bullshit war in order to sell your weapons, a corporation has to do it. Because if they don’t their competitors will and eat them alive. Capitalism not only rewards greed but necessitates it.

You made a distinction between western and japanese cyberpunk but you mentiones China and then went around. What characteristics would chinese CP have? Or maybe China is already a CP society?

You mispronounced Gundam, it is NOT pronounced "Gun-damn" it's "Gun-dumb", not that older Gundam series were dumb, just lacking uncensored female masturbation or lesbian stuff, nudity and sex! Gundam Wing and/or Gundam Wing Endless Waltz could have had that to break the tension of war and politics and family dynamics! At least Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team had some nudity, the guerilla-faction leader's daughter who was swimming naked in the pond, that was a true breath-of-fresh-air for me because if it just has war, politics and family dynamics, if any, then it's just for the appreciation for the Character Design and Story!
