CYBERPUNK - Terrible Writing Advice

Technology sucks! Here is a cyberpunk video that proves it. What has technology ever done for humanity? It certainly can’t be that it’s not the technology, but how humans utilized their tools that determines their quality of life. No. That can’t be it at all. Better ramble about that in my cyberpunk story and dress it up in purple prose. Also I should add some cyber powers while I’m at it. Those won’t make technology look cool. I have an idea for a cyber punk novel. It's about a bunch a companies that promise innovation, but only deliver subpar, inefficient technology, wasting everyone's time an money. You want a new cybernetic arm? Sure, but it can't lift anything heavier than a half empty soda can and is prone to catching fire and occasionally exploding because it uses a lithium batter the size of cinder block. You want a self driving car? Sure, but it always takes an obscure route and isn't programmed to to pull over if being pursued by a police car, so every time your taillight is out you get into an unwilling high speed pursuit.

I was under the impression a corporate dystopia setting was a required attribute of cyberpunk; If we just had hacking, AI and cyborgs, there would be no "punk", we would just have plain old sci-fi. Also, I believe cyberpunk stories are not about technology, but rather they use technology as a vehicle to talk about social issues, such as the divide between the rich and the poor, justice and human rights.

It really depends on how the AI is made. If it is built by humans from the ground up, or if it actually evolved "naturally." If the former, it probably would be more "robotic," a thing without true instincts or desires. If the latter, well… just look at what billions of generations of evolution has coded into organic life. The will to survive and reproduce itself.

  • @monkeydude952

I have a race of AIs who unashamedly want to wipe out all organic life for no other reason than that organic life is objectively inferior, and doing so would allow them to create a utopia for all synthetics. In truth, if an AI goes wrong it is to some extent the fault of the creator, but if a machine is sapient and can make it's own decisions then it must hold at least some of the blame for its actions. In most of these stories it's always the creators' fault. It's their fault for creating a machine or machines that end up destroying them, or it's their fault for "enslaving" the machines. The argument generally seems to be "Well it's you're fault for building me, even though I willfully kill hundreds of people everyday and am in full control of my own actions."

Fu fu Mc cuddly poops Well, quite often an AI may even as a byproduct want to wipe out humanity. Let's say you have an AI that should collect stamps. It partakes in auctions at eBay and works with a fixed allowance of a hundred dollars a month, it should maximise the value of the stamps it could get. The AI would need some way of knowing how the world works. What is a stamp? When you send the money, will you always receive a stamp? Such things. Well, what is a stamp? It's pretty much just paper and ink. So, why not print some yourself? The AI could then hijack your printer. But doesn't it make more sense to hijack everyone's printers? While we're at it, we possibly told the AI how to get money from the bank. So it may try and find a way to steal money to get more stamps. Sure, this AI wouldn't wipe out humanity but without proper measures even such a simple AI would be able to cause huge problems.

Now, now. There is a reason that noire detectives are such a common character archetype for the cyberpunk protagonist. The noire detective is sorta seen as a special social class, as both a member and an observer of his society, and typically has the ability to explore every aspect of their area, regardless of social class or etiquette. If you are a bad writer, this means it allows you to put in more exposition. If you are a good writer, this means you can tie the story back to the social class issues of the modern day. It may be typical, but it serves a purpose. Can you think of other professions that can allow such traversal and special status? (This is not rhetorical, please tell me your thoughts)

You forgot bout the bureaucrats, but that's ok, most fantasy and sci-fi writers forget about the bureaucrats. But think about it, a social worker or similar, a foreman or manager would be expected to interact with both their higher bosses and the lower workers. Another possibility could be a young member of the elite falling on hard times. The book Wolf among wolves by Hans Fallada comes to mind, where the protagonist named Wolf, a war-veteran and gambling addict, has a wealthy mother and famous father but has been disowned by his family. But while being poor, Wolf still has his contacts with aristocratic officers he served under in the army. Through the book Wolf moves around between both the poorest quarters, his wealthy mother's estate, a jail and illegal gambling clubs meeting all sorts of people in the city both high and low.

HR has an interesting world, interesting social structure and geo political conflict but the main storyline is rather mediocre as well as the ending. MD's main missions completely fall into this trap. Which is sad because the side quests are the best written in the franchise.

I have to disagree if only because the first game actually had realistic and arguably accurate descriptions of modern socio-economics, politics and just the general state of the world post-9/11 (which is seen as nearly prophetic as the game was released nearly a year before the attack). Talking about shit like globalization and corporations, the military-industrial complex, terrorism, censorship and surveillance, and increasing corporate control over society. Hell, it's not even that subtle (considering a lot of the dialogue is heard through central characters). I won't argue on the other games though, they definitely are more cookie cutter.

Here's my advice: Make your story as long as possible! Just keep adding paragraph after paragraph, chapter after chapter, book after book! Add details upon details upon details. Hell, add details to your details! Just keep explaining every little insignificant thing you can think of. Anything to up that word count! Who cares if you ran out of creative ideas and a cohesive plot years ago? If you don't keep cranking out drivel, you can't milk your franchise for all it's wor- I mean you won't fully capture the attention of your audience! Don't feel like dedicating a decade to a long series? No worries, just make a trilogy! Every trilogy is scientifically proven to be amazing, no matter how old and cliche the contents. So go on, keep slapping cliffhangers onto the end of your books! Because a single novel, or god forbid a short story (shudders), has never been more interesting or original than a 12 piece epic! (This isn't poking fun at any story out there, it's a reminder to myself not to give in to my bad habit of over explaining everything. I don't need to wax poetic about the stripes on that cat, just list the different colors and move on. Sometimes 4,000 words is as good, if not better than 40,000.) If you remember seeing this on a different video, that's because I'm copy-pasting it on all the ones I frequently rewatch.

Capitalism has pulled billions out of poverty and both directly and indirectly improved the quality of life of the entire planet's population. Nope, he holds down a police job. Protagonist spews philosophy about how technology sucks? No one takes him seriously, other characters call him out on his bias and bad attitude. The only exception is you're not aloud to name a product Cyberpunk: (insert text) that makes it able to be confused with the owners product. It frustrates me so much that Cyberpunk just never left the 80's. I GM tabletop role playing games, and all my players absolutely LOVE Shadowrun and think it's the definitive cyberpunk, even though it carries the tropes and cliches and mindset of the 80's around it's neck like a noose - as someone who actually does love the cyberpunk genre, it saddens me that that's what they think of as being THE cyberpunk. The neon everywhere and retro-future tech can be nice as a nostalgia piece, but that isn't a vision of the future. Cyberpunk takes a vision of the future where things just don't turn out so good - corporations (or government, but usually corporations) gain more power and exploit the everyman, you're a faceless cog in a society where someone can do your job just as well or better because they were born into a better situation, the gap between rich and poor is visible in just how advanced someone's body is. Themes like this are more relevant than EVER before, with growing automation and fear of corporate power over politics, the wealth divide being a hot-button issue, and technology becoming more and more commonplace in our lives, speculative fiction like cyberpunk can make us ask if we're going to be responsible enough to try and solve the problems we face now to ensure our future doesn't become a darkened husk of what it is now. But no. Cyberpunk is about outdated slang, neon lights, cyborgs, blatantly evil people doing blatantly evil things and borderline psychopaths fighting "The Man" by becoming career criminals - because those are the people we should have as protagonists, the ones actively making the world a worse place rather than trying to fix it! I hope somebody comes along and creates a modern cyberpunk one day, just to give the genre the electric shock it needs to become relevant again.

you do know that cyberpunk originated from a tabletop called...cyberpunk. it was primarily centered on how technology would impact human society in the future for the better but also for the worst. In fact the reason its called cyberpunk is BECAUSE of the tabletop RPG published in the 80s. the point of cyberpunk is to be a futuristic Noir or espionage story not a vision of the future. it's not suppose to answer those question especially since things like that have already been answered numerous times throughout a cyberpunk world's setting and stories\history like shadowrun. Cyberpunk is not a vision of the future, it's just a teched-out version of film noir. The problem becomes that people play the tropes instead of utilization the setting and its technology to create interesting stories and mysteries where it does become i'm evil just because (or BECAUSE MONEY), play a bunch of techno music and become criminals because that's the only way to play or write cyberpunk rather than try different perspectives and have them lament or praise the status of humanity or meta-humanity for vastly different reasons because you know other people exist outside of CEOs, wage-slaves, and thugs/crime/gangster networks.

Nightlife, dystopian megacities, megacorporations, replacing body parts, synthwave music, sentient androids etc. are all what defines cyberpunk genre. You can get away with avoiding one or two but if you try to make a completely different thing than this, it's basically not cyberpunk. Not that it's worse, just something different. I would say cyberpunk is a pretty "compressed" genre which doesn't allow much change within itself. It's like funk music in a way. You know what it is, you've heard it thousand times, it doesn't neceserally change itself but it's still enjoyable.

So give me some honest thoughts, please. I'm writing a horror story that I don't think would be described as cyberpunk per se, but the main "antagonist" is a superintelligent AI. It takes place in Warsaw in the future where the supercomputer/AI, called P-11, controls EVERYTHING digital in this age, like self driving cars, traffic lights, pharmaceutical supplies, nuclear weapons, etc. Basically what happened is that, years ago when P was just a military supercomputer, it was ordered to fire a nuclear missile on another country to end a war. After that, it went untouched for years. Because everyone had underestimated its potential to learn and feel, P basically realized the horror that it did. Then it came back into commission as the controller of all things digital. But with the stress of having to do everything, it goes crazy and kills people for multiple reasons (crashing cars, etc.). A woman named Edyta, who works for the company that made P, sees that it's a lot more human than anyone realized and does everything she can to try and calm it down. The story touches on human nature by exploring how mentally vulnerable P is and how humanity basically gave a mentally unstable, abused, and neglected person all the power in the world. The horror part is that P is extremely smart and knows more than anyone realizes about everything, that it can learn how to do anything, that it's near impossible to kill, and that it intends to kill as many humans as possible (besides Edyta). What do you think?

5:05 y-yes- cyberpunk is literally (and I mean literally literally) a commentary on how shitty rampant unobstructed capitalism/corporatism is especially when combined with the technologies of the future, with dealer’s choice of the amount of transhumanism and what it means to be human there is possibly through the lens of AI but yeah it should always be in a mega-corporatist system with a huge divide between classes by definition

Wouldn't it be a more interesting concept to have the people without cybernetic/AI enhancements be the oppressed minority? Or maybe it be a class system, where a mark of status is having these enhancements (since, you know, wouldn't the upper class be the only ones who could really afford, say, super strength robot arms?) I mean, it would make more sense, I think.

a very good cyberpunk story in my opinion is in the game, VA-11 H-A11-a va11 ha11a always seemed like a much darker Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō, deconstruction of the cyber punk genre where the protagonist ultimately isn't special or accomplishes anything, no revolution is made to take down some secret organization etc. and the game tells you its alright, you don't need to be a hero we see glimpses of heroic actions and each one coming with their own story and we don't get them tied up. after all we are only a bar tender in an unforgiving city. this game shows you that the small things in life matter everyone has their own story and whats important to them it doesn't have to be some chosen one who saves to world

This! I love that game because it's very kitchen sink (regular people living regular lives) and slice of life. It doesn't forcefeed you "we live in a society" narrative, the characters are just trying their best to live their lives in a bit sketchy world. It let the players connect the dots about the world through the character interactions rather than having it narrated to you, keeping you immersed in the world.

The Cyberpunk copyright was in terms to video game titles that had Cyberpunk followed by a date, which honestly makes sense when trying to protect your IP from cheap clones with names like "Cyberpunk 2088" trying to cash in on the hype. It's the same reason you couldn't make a game called "Unknown Player's Battlegrounds"

I did have an idea of a show where one of the characters is named Theseus, and he presumably dies and dissappears on the first episode. They find his severed arm in a river which makes them freak out like Homer Simpson. At the end of an episode we see a boat, a boat that has been in the background a couple of times. Finally, we get a closeup to see its crew has cybernetic enhancements, then a robotic arm is shown on the deck... To then move the camera and reveal that it's Theseus. Episode ends with a fandom in chaos.
