I was having some trouble with this sharpener but this video showed me the pressure and that trick with the index finger fixed a big issue I was having but even then the knives were functionally sharper than what I started out with so great sharpener for beginners. Thank you for the video.

Finally picked up one of these. Got my PM2 back to shaving sharp. Couldn't quite get the surgical factory edge, but works better than any other sharpener I've used. You'd probably have to throw down for a Wicked Sharp or Edge Pro to do better. Definitely a keeper.

Thank you for your review on the Work Sharp field sharpener. I have recently purchased a Spyderco Manix 2 lightweight (thanks to your review) and am not comfortable sharpening using the stones that I own. I can get a decent sharpness, good for working with, but doesn't cut paper super well. With the Work Sharp field sharpener, I feel confident to sharpen my new knife without worrying as much to damaging the blade. Paper is now easily sliced through with ease with only a minute or so to sharpen. I am impressed.

The ceramic rod is probably for microbeveling. That's why it's at a steeper angle.

I've had a number of :field" sharpeners over the years, but nearly all of them were just honing rods. This is a real sharpener. I've used it to sharpen everything up to an 8: chef's knife. I have it with me everywhere I can expect to encounter a knife.

I bought this sharpener based on your review and it's been excellent. I am not very good sharpening, so it's nice to have something that helps out. The only issue I have is that - like you mention in the review - the guides on the ceramic rods are not the same angle as the stones. Not sure why.

I will say, I own a wicked edge system but, I just picked this up and I really like it. I mean, I wish it was a bit finer than 20 degrees but, that puts a great work edge that will be durable. My wicked edge will be my go to on my expensive blades but, I love this for a quick job on my cheaper blades. It gives a fantastic edge if you do your part. Great working edge not a mirror, but shaving sharp with a little bite for digging in. So far I've only used it on S-30v and AUS8 I wouldn't want to do my harder S-30v or D2 or anything like that but, it would do it if it was all you had. I freaking love this little sharpener.

A great little tool. that always goes camping with me, but lives in my kitchen. I agree that a 20-degree angle on the hone would be a better idea, but I've learned to deal with it, as have you. A lot of folks don't know this (I didn't for a while), but the ceramic rod also comes out for cleaning. There's a little stainless pin next to the knob. Use a small rod; the micro driver on a Wave,. for example, to push the pin through, and pull out the rod. I usually stow the pin under one of the diamond plates.

Great video, the angle goes from 20 to 25 degrees on the ceramic to break off the burr the developed on both sides as we go from one side to the next. We are to lighten the pressure and pass it less aggressively.

I believe the 25 degree on the ceramic side is more aimed toward hitting that secondary bevel to refine the edge. Hope that helps with why the sharpener transitions from 20 to 25 degrees.

Awesome sharpener. Have two. One in my edc and one in my bowhunting pack. Fish hook sharpener seemed worthless at first (to me) but it's actually excellent for sharpening the point of your knife. Just watch the rod rotation easy to slip off and poke yourself. Carmex keeps the strop in good condition and I use a little metal polish compound on my strop. Surgically sharp :)

  • @thatoddfella
    @thatoddfella9 жыл бұрын

I believe the ceramic rods are set at a steeper angle because they are for honing the blade (removing the bur) then the leather strip is used once complete to polish the finished edge.

  • @BibleStudent4U

The more I use mine the better I like it, I especially like the ceramic rod it cleans up my blades very nicely. This is an essential piece of gear for me. I have one in my pack and another on my desk. I would recommend having a larger strap along with the sharpener because the one that comes on it is too narrow to do much, and tears up pretty quickly.

I watched several videos of different knife sharpeners including this one. It was the key to my decision to order one.I am not very good at sharpening freehand and I think the angle guides will help. I watched your video on the EZE folding sharpener and your reference to this sharpener turned the tide. I will also incorporate the woven lanyard idea suggested by another viewer. My favorite knife, a Kershaw 1620, has an oddly curved blade. Can I sharpen it on the Diamond flats or should I use the 3 way ceramic tool? Thank you for the fine video.

I would set the thing on a log, flat rock, anything. The only way I would hold it in my hand would be for fish hooks or tiny pen blades & such. Besides, if ya set it on a fairly decent surface, it's going to be a heck of a lot more stable & consistent.....vs....trying to hold it steady. It would be much easier, don't ya think? Pretty cool little field sharpener system though, for work tool type blades.

Bought one a couple weeks ago... hugely impressed and I've been sharpening blades for over 20yrs. Muscle memory of the angle is very important and the angle guides do a great job of training your muscles. Took a very dull kitchen knife that I hadn't sharpened in a few months (used Japanese water stones last time), and it was impressively sharp in minutes. The leather strop was dry as a bone right out of the box so I added a generous bit of honing oil to moisturize it then loaded it with green chromium oxide compound and it's perfect. I've also got a worksharp Ken onion edition belt sharpening system and a worksharp 3000 for my woodworking tools - all around they've got a stellar lineup for sharpening

Couldn't disagree with you more - product is disappointing and not fit for purpose. Have now tries to use this product on a simple folding hunting knife - does not provide an edge that is usable at all. Forget shaving the hairs off your arms - you'd have to scrub the knife up and down and I'd still think they'd still be there.

OK, I have the guided system and I really love it, so I am thinking, should I buy this? Boom, yes! Great for a quick and super sharp edge, fits easily into small places but still big enough to be a useful tool, has all the components you need in a small package. Sure, if I am going to sharpen a bunch of knives, I will pull out the Work Sharp Guided system, but for everyday quick edge and touch up, this rocks! Thanks GT, keep up the great work!!

I'm a recent subscriber here having only found your channel a week or so ago. I didn't come across this video because of that though, I was actually looking at this on Amazon and some of the reviews said to "check out videos on KZread" (one of those head slapping "Duh!" moments, LOL), so I did a search on this sharpener, this was the 1st video in the list that KZread popped up (I'm glad BTW :) ). My question is, this was 4 years ago, what are your thoughts on it now? I wanted to mention, I don't just randomly subscribe to channels because there's a video or 2 that I like. While I really do/did enjoy your channel before I discovered your faith, it was your faith plus the content that made me click "Subscribe". The content that I've seen so far (including this video) plus the encouragement of another's faith that you share in your channel that let me know I wanted to :) Anyways, wishing you and yours a very blessed holiday season and a merry Christmas!

I used to not like serrations, but over time I've found myself using them increasingly for really quick and efficient cutting. And they save my pain edge, especially with hard plastics. Serrations make for quick and easy work. Try using them more often. You'll find they really do come in handy for really quick cutting where a plain edge would take forever, and leave you with a dull edge.

Nice idea, but those angle guides close off the sharpening area in a weird way. I have a Smith's 2-sided diamond handheld sharpener and while it doesn't have angle guides--which I wouldn't bother with anyway--it does provide a better handle in the form of a cover that slips over the stones when you're done. I just glued a small piece of ceramic and a strip of leather with some polishing paste for finer honing of the edge. For larger blades, I generally take the stone to the edge rather than the edge to the stone. More like you'd do with a file on a machete. Oh well. Whatever works for you.

These work great on an axe. Remove the plate from the magnetically held grip and go for it. Then use the ceramic and the strop and you're good to go.

There's a 5 degree increase so you can produce a microbevel. That said, I'd prefer a consistent angle as well.
