Working with Gold-Filled
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Gold-filled metal allows you to offer the look of karat gold at an affordable price. Since there is a layer of karat gold over a base metal core, care needs to be taken to prevent damaging the gold layer. Join Paulene Everett from the jewelry Tech Team as she works with gold-filled fabrication metal and provides tips for working with this material.

Another really informative instructional video from Rio. It was very well spoken. Thanks and keep the goodness coming. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
I use gold filled all the time and I live in Costa Rica. I wear my gold fill in the shower and in the ocean. I made a friend who is a surfer a pair of tiny hoops with pearls out of gold fill and she never takes them off. She surfs in them, sleeps in them, bathed in them etc… after 2 years she asked me to replace her pearls because one cracked, hoops still in tact. Just needed a polish.
Thanks for a very helpful video!
Hiya, Thank you, I've some gold filled but was a little concerned about using it and protecting it. All were answered in your excellent video. Steve...
Great video since gold filled was the metal I was having issues soldering. Now to find the solder you said to use !
Awesome video on gold filled metal. Thanks

Excellent. We are glad you found this helpful!
Thanks. 😆
I started using cupronil for fire scale barrier but I still notice my goldfilled rings seem a bit rosy, which means I've burnt off a layer of the gold. Also, I use solder paste instead of hard solder & I notice it's harder to get it to stick to the surfaces after I spray the barrier flux. Should I then go in w/that yellow flux just on the seams to get the paste to stick & flow better? Goldfilled is so finicky but working w/solid gold is too expensive for me rn.
Hi! What rotary tumbler do you recommend?
What is the item number for the wire you are using?
Hi. This video is so helpful! Can you suggest a pen or bath plating item to help with the seams for my bezel rings?

Thank you for the question! Here is a response from our tech team: We do carry pen plater systems. 335136, 335137, 335400. Any one of these will be fine for plating the bezel seam. You can only use plating solution. The bath plating solution is not strong enough for the pen plating machine. if you have a rectifier for your bath plating system this can also be used for pen plating. All you will need is the pen 335139 and the pen plating solution.
I just bought a hydrogen torch, I’m looking forward to using it, hoping it will be better since there is little to no firescale.

congrats on the new torch! Enjoy!
Would hammering textures ruin gold filled wire? Say for an Earring or ring? Also, if you’ve cut the wire and need to solder on an earring post, will the gold solder adhere to the brass? Thanks so much

Thank you for the question! Here is a response from our tech team: I would make sure that my hammers are polished. Any scratches, dings and dents can damage or cut through the gold layer and expose the brass. Also be careful polishing the gold filled material after hammering so you don’t remove the gold layer, www.riogrande.com/knowledge-hub/videos/how-to-create-barrier-flux/ Gold solder will adhere to the brass. Make sure that when solder to gold filled materials you use a barrier flux to protect the surface. Then use your soldering flux to help the solder flow. This will keep the gold layer from oxidizing and becoming damaged. www.riogrande.com/knowledge-hub/videos/working-with-gold-filled/
How will I cover cut edges after sawing on Yellow gold filled 🤦🏻♀️
👍👍👍♥️
So, if you cut it and have to bath plating the cut sides, technically it losses the gold filled part, no??? and the sides, where you cut and plated would rust off faster, in a few months and oxidize very fast, losing the whole point of being GOLD FILLED...or Am I wrong?
Are you in the 956
