I don't understand why the incident commander stayed in his buggy, I would be out walking around the structure too see all hazards and to hear what is really going on the scene.

According to Project Mayday, 67% of the maydays they've researched are missed on the first call when incident commanders are mobile ("sidewalk command"). We use experienced division supervisors to be the eyes and the ears of command outside the vehicle, while IC stays in a sterile environment to monitor for even the slightest call for help. In this instance, specifically, radio system differences made it necessary to use both of the in-vehicle mobiles and a portable to effectively communicate with all responding units. We're working to address that in the long run, but this is the best we can do with what we have for now. Feel free to email me at firechief@laketwp.com if you'd like to discuss more! There are pros and cons to everything, and no one way (outside the rig, back of the rig, in the rig) will be perfect for each fire.

All that yellow smoke always or almost always appears it is in the attic. I always notice the yellow when it hits the insulation. Then the flames….

I guess everyone is different, but they didn’t put any ladders on all 4 sides? ….For escape etc since they were inside? I thought most did, there is that satellite pole out back, but the electrical line appears to run through it or near it. Yes there are stairs on the B side? But that doesn’t help you if the roof collapses and you can’t get to it? Oh wait now they did, but don’t you do that first prior to entering? Or while entering?

We're working together on that cultural shift in our region when it comes to truckwork. Ladders have long been an afterthought, but great point here that I could have called for it. Thank you for the feedback, and we'll always keep working to improve!

@cessnadriver6813 not necessarily true it’s always about firemen safety first, including the souls inside. It’s like on an airplane losing pressurization, put your air bag first then assist other. If you pass out you are no good to others anyways. It takes a minute or two to give exits from all upper levels in case needed. I have seen firemen at a window half hanging out looking for an exit.

Engine company, crew of 1... Guys, we're headed to a bad place if we don't work on recruitment and retention of people who still respond after they get the t-shirt.

Uhhh not everywhere has fire hydrants, an example, the closest hydrant to my house where I live 1.2 miles or so away, that’s why we rely heavily on tenders

I understand the sentiment, but our crews understand that effective command is stationary and in isolation. Command worries about the firefighters so the firefighters can worry about the citizens. Pros and cons to everything, though. I get out of the vehicle a few times to assess, but primarily rely on the crews and division supervisors to be my trusted eyes and ears. One element to this is I was using both my mobiles and a portable to talk to incoming crews, as this county is a patchwork quilt of radio systems. Couldn’t do that effectively if I was walking around. Another consideration when weighing pros and cons: 67% of missed maydays involved “sidewalk command,” 26% were missed at the rear of the vehicle, with just 7% missed inside the vehicle (Source: Project Mayday). I wouldn’t do this whole call 100% the same, and learned a lot watching this back (hence sharing it for others to do the same), but that’s just how we choose to do it here. Thanks for your comment! -Chief Dorner

Where I'm from the IC needs to operate multiple radio. At least 2 minimum. 1 for the tac channel, and 1 to communicate with the dispatch channel. So they stay inside, or near, their vehicle to have access to both radios. Portable radio will be on the tac channel and in-vehicle radio will be on the dispatch channel.
