Work on Evonne the Turbodiesel Begins!
Evonne is the name of my 2005 E320 CDI with the amazing OM648 engine, the best turbodiesel that Mercedes ever built.
Before I go crazy with modifications I need to take care of the basics! Checking on the exhaust and differential, plus changing the oil, and replacing a stuck thermostat.

I love my 05 E320 CDI. 270K miles, and still going strong. note; I have been using Valvoline MaxLife synthetic ATF for the last 200k miles.
Great build your doing, my thermostat just failed last week and the new one arrived today on my 06 e320 CDI, couldn’t be more perfect I came across your detailed thermostat change! Haven’t found many in depth videos!
Congrats on your 05 e320cdi! I own one myself and love it. Have you used a MB 229.5 approved oil?

Among the major reasons for the very specific specs is to keep the ash content low and avoid issues with the emissions systems. Without those systems, I simply keep good quality synthetic in the engine and I don't worry about that spec. For the transmission, however, I only used the approved ATF.
off the subject my turbo has gone out do you recommend rebuilding it or getting one from a juck yard ?

I'd contact the guys at ecutuningkaunas.com/ and you can probably get a hybrid built for you. Short of that, I have rebuilt them by swapping in rotating assembly cartridges purchased on eBay without any issues.

Pour the bulk of the oil in via the oil filter housing.

Great idea! I'll try that next time.

@@ArtOfDiesel That's how I've been doing it for many years ln my TDIs: I even look to drop in the filter when the housing is full of oil and hasn't drained down- this takes some skill to do quickly but not too quick that you plunge oil outside the housing; it's an issue of trying to saturate the filter. I have yet to do an oil change on one of these but will aim to do so via topside extraction, which is how I do it on my TDIs (easiest oil change there is!).

@@seer7327 I've owned a couple TDIs and never thought to do it this way. Does saturating the oil filter prevent oil starvation on that first startup after the oil change?

@@ArtOfDiesel The logic would seem to suggest that it's beneficial; can'r say which it has the moat relevant benefit for, mechanical or mental😄

@@seer7327 , regardless of that, I certainly will put oil into the engine using your trick next time. Thanks!
