Thank you for this kind comment Ellen. It comes from years of "live performance" experience in front of teenage audiences. When you're teaching adolescents, they let you know in all sorts of ways whether or not you are getting through to them. It helps to refine a teacher's process to figure out what works. Otherwise I would have had to deal with mayhem and I'm not fond of that.

I hope you reply to me. I'm knitting a cabled cardigan made with mohair and the sweater is knitted in pieces. When decreasing for the shoulders, armholes , neckline or for sleeves should I knitin stockingette when I cannot knitthe charted stitch(es)?

By the way I’m not Knitting this for a baby anymore because of the dangers with the holes in the lace I will try to follow this tutorial for an adult lace sweater using your “sweater 101” book which by the way is awesome it’s full of so much useful information and clear instructions which have FREED me from always using patterns. Now I can knit sweaters and cardigans using my own stitch patterns. Knitting has improved my mental health problems and depression. I recommend it to anyone with these challenges it really helps and works for ME without having to take as strong medication.

I'm grateful to have helped you but only you and Carla can be proud of how much you have achieved in learning new skills that challenge you. And I'm excited that you've both caught the creative bug that comes with sticks and strings. One thing that was done in days past was to make little mitts for the baby to keep their little hand warm but, and I don't think this was intentional, but the mitts keep the tiny fingers out of the lace. Lace has been knit for babies for a few centuries and there have been no history or instances of little digits stuck in lace from days past. Mitts is the answer. My mom put them on me as I used to scratch my face as a baby. Still have a scar on my face from that.

Thank you for this excellent explanation of your mental and design process to complete this lace motif. Have you ever tried Stitch Fiddle? I have found it very helpful for making my own color work designs but have never tried it for lace.

I actually mispoke here. It should be "It can't be seen by a man on galloping horse." This was unusual for my mother because she was quite a perfectionist, but for some things . . . like this instance . . . they were called good.

How does this work when you have a odd number stitch pattern or q combination patter. For example i'm knitting a pattern and i don't know how to knit it, because i don't know if it is a 9 stitch patter or a 14 stitches patter becase each motiv are 9 stitches and its followed by 5 regular stitches that how its goes, until the end when only those 9 stitches are made and finish with regular stitches

Hi Cheryl, would you have any advice regarding adding button holes? I have a long knitted cardigan but it came with only three buttons at the top and I would like to add some more buttons (and button holes) further down to make it less flared around the waistline. Is there a way I can do that without unravelling the whole cardigan and without having to sew around the edges (it would look different to the other button holes)? Thank you, have a great day x

I actually got the cardigan second hand and I hadn’t noticed before but there seems to be some stitching around the buttonholes, but they do appear to have been knitted in as well I think! (I don’t have much experience with knitting 😅) So I wonder if it would be possible to cut vertical buttonholes and then stitch around them without destroying the cardigan? 🤔

Vertical cutting, in general, is not very dangerous, but there are variables that help determine the degree of success. What fiber is it? What is the pattern st of the band? Is the stitching around the buttonhole by hand or machine? What is the gauge (how many stitches per inch?) It's always so hard to comment on these things unless I can see them.

Hi Cheryl. You will help me a great deal if you answer my questions . I knit lace shawl stole etc almost every and I rewriting all the patterns in a strip of paper each row for each strip then punch a hole and ringed them tog. this way I can leave my knitting without loosing the row when I come back to it/ .It is very taxing to write each long pattern. Now that you mention about the Micro soft word what exactly is does it called .It will cut down my time of writing not to mention it will be so ,much neater.Lastly will you please share with me for the lacy pattern you are working I only need the pattern of of the design that I can use to make a scarf Thank you very much.

Thank you for asking Veronica. I don't know if you knew it but I underwent emergency open-heart surgery last August 30. I'm hugely grateful that they were not only able to save my life but it is much improved, though it took a good 6 months to recover with a complication and cardiac rehab, etc. And now I'm adjusting to this new way of life during a pandemic. I do have ideas for videos but am feeling daunted by a switch over to HD (high definition) from SD (standard definition). It's a lot of technical stuff to learn now that my dear friend and cameraman no longer lives in the area. He used to help me with that . . . but I do hope to make more videos at some point. I have a couple that I think would be helpful. I never want to make videos that duplicate simple information done by lots of other people.

Knitting with Cheryl Brunette I had no idea that you underwent an intensive heart procedure. I’m very happy to hear you are doing well. That’s the important thing. The videos can wait. You are such a natural teacher and I benefited so much from your expertise. If you ever do get back to making videos, don’t worry too much on the technology. In my opinion, your videos were just fine and honestly I can’t tell the difference between high definition and low definition. Anyway do stay safe and virus free and continued progress on your recuperation.

Dear Cheryl hope you’re well it’s 6am in London I just woke up. Would it be possible for you to do any tutorials on decreases and increases for other pattern stitches it would be very helpful and much appreciated. Also I am struggling with how exactly to use a stitch pattern book I’m not sure how to work it in a sweater I’m working from your sweater 101 book. The 6+1 what would happen if you didn’t use the +1 what would the sweater look like ? If I have 63sts to cast on how do I fit the pattern stitch in that? I’ve never really known how to use a pattern book a tutorial would be great!!! I’ve just been guessing really and luckily it’s worked out for my sons sweater. Many thanks again in advance.

Hi Kim. As I said in the video, every stitch pattern shaped into any sweater piece has to be figured out all by itself. That means there are thousands of different stitch pattern/shaping variations, maybe 10s of thousands. The only way to understand how to do this is to approach each piece step-by-step as I showed in this video and you must learn to walk before you can run. Start by knitting swatches of several stitch patterns from your book that you like. Make the swatches generous. Enjoy the process. Lace, for example, looks very different at different gauges and with different yarns. Watch this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnph3JWDeMa_YdY.html It will help you understand the idea of "a multiple of X plus Y stitches." You do not have to make a sweater right now. You need to get comfortable with playing with the stitches you like. If you and Carla work together on this I think it will be even more fun. Then, later, you can think about gauge and translating these stitch patterns into sweaters.

I didn't know how to share this with you any other way. I was watching this video; 1929 Interviews With Elderly People Throughout the US. At about the 30 second mark were several older ladies knitting. I have never seen it done exactly like this before. I thought you and your other followers might like to see and perhaps try it. I know I will next chance I get.

Hi Linda. Thank you for this reference. I have seen this way of holding the needles and knitting before. One of my aunts did it consistently and my mother occasionally, usually on small circular things like socks or mittens. I've tried it but I don't really like it.

I have a problem with increasing and decreasing in a lace pattern the first row is K1,YFW,SL1 K2tog,PSSO YFW K5 to last 4stitches K1YFW SL1 K2tother PSSO YFW K1 Can you please please help me with this thank you so much

If you watched the video you will see that it's a step-by-step problem-solving process and every size of every pattern is different. You could schedule a 90-minute SOS help session with me. Every pattern is different and it is a matter of problem-solving at each decrease point. Doing what "looks good" and gets you to the right stitch count is what is needed.

Great video, Cheryl. But I would have like to have seen you actually knitting the decreases.

That's a different lesson in my old teacher's mind because there are choices on how to execute decreases. Maybe a future video on a couple of unusual SSKs and double decreases?

All IS well . . . I'm recovering well from emergency open-heart surgery (3-way bypass) I had about a month ago. It saved my life and I hope has given me more than a decade more of it. It will, however, take more time for full recovery. I'm still pretty sore and I tire easily.

I just didn't explain it clearly enough so I had to go back and shoot it 2 more times. The third take was coherent. Brain burps, apparently. Or rather, not focusing intently enough. Sometimes when I'm shooting I'm following sound and sight monitors instead of just freely walking through what's in front of me. I miss my camera guy but he moved away and is really too frail to do it anymore. He was a retired Hollywood pro. He made me look better on camera than I do in person. Not so many wrinkles . . . :D
