thank you for this tutorial I wanted task a question concerning the pattern I am working on perhaps you can help me in some way This for the yoke in apattern I am working on I am working this on circular needles now in the body it was done on two needles, I have put the body of the sweater on the circular needles and have followed the instructions. Now this is my problem I don't understand when they as pick up and knit nine st. up back neck shaping. pick up and knit sleeve then pick up and knit 16 sts. down left front neck shaping. my question is what does the up and the down mean this would help me a lot. thank you Joyce Woolley

Hello. Thanks for reaching out. It is difficult to know exactly what the pattern is calling for without seeing the written pattern or without doing the actual knitting up to that point and taking a look at what we have. I would imaging though that their instructions on picking up stitches up and down the neck shaping is simply on when you are doing that, either up the back side of the neck, or down the front part of the neck. It's not a different way of picking up stitches, just indicating where on the neck line you are picking up those stitches. I wish I could give more of a specific answer, but as I said, it is difficult without seeing all of the pattern and having knitted it myself. Sometimes simply knitting to that part of the pattern and you can see your knitting to that point makes the written instructions much clearer and it makes more sense. Hope that helps a little. can you tell me how to figure total stitches needed to CO when a pattern says: Multiples of 9 plus 6 ?? Really enjoyed your video. You explain things so simple and I learned a lot.

Yes. If your pattern says cast on multiples of 9 plus six you can cast on 9, 18, 27 etc and then add six. So figure how large you want your project, perhaps do a swatch to determine width and then determine your cast on. Perhaps it’s 33 which would be 9 times 3 for 27 plus 6 for 33. Or cast on total of 42 (9x4 plus 6). Does that make sense?.

Hey Jacq. I got this one pattern and I’ve been stuck on one of the instructions it’s “K0 (3-0-3)” As it’s first step for this row, I have absolutely no idea what it means. Do you think you can help?

It looks like these are instructions for various sizes. It should indicate near the beginning of the pattern what sizes these are for and would be written for example x-small (small, medium, large). Or something like that. This appears to indicate how many stitches to knit for those sizes. Knit zero stiches for the first size indicated (before the parentheses). Or Knit 3 stitches for the next size; Knit zero stiches for the third size and Knit 3 stitches for the last size. Does that make sense. It looks weird because they indicate to knit zero, which normally would not be something included in the pattern, but when the other sizes call for a certain number of stitches, they have to indicate that for the other sizes, you do not knit any stitches before the next set of stitches. Hope that helps.

This pattern looks like it has instructions for various sizes of the baby cardigan. When it tells you to cast on 21 (25:29:29:33), the different numbers represent the different sizes of the cardigan. Somewhere near the top of the pattern you should see what the sizes are and they will be presented in a similar way with parenthesis i.e. newborn (infant: 2T: 3T: 4T) or something similar. Once you've determined which size you want to follow in the pattern you will always use the number indicated in that spot. So for example in my above example here if you were following the "infant" size, you would refer to the first number behind the parenthesis and cast on 25 stitches. And you would look at that first number behind the parenthesis for all your instructions throughout the pattern. I talk about this at length in this video, so I would recommend watching that segment again to fully understand. Then when your instructions say to knit 2 rows, it means that after you have casted on the number of stitches indicated (either 21, 25, 29, or 33, which ever size you are following), you would knit all the stitches for the first 2 rows. Hi, i'm struggling to find any videos that explain the instructions for increasing sleeves, I can increase a stitch, but just not sure what this means; Inc 1 st each end of 5th and 7 foll 6th rows, then on every foll 8th row to 64 sts. Are u able to explain this a bit better for me please.

How many stitches are on your needle at the point of these instructions? This will help me make sure I'm following how many increase rows they are asking you to complete.

Whenever you see an instruction followed by additional numbers in parentheses ... those numbers in the parenthesis indicates what you would do for the other sizes that this pattern includes. I talk about this sizing instruction in my video at about the 5 minute mark. But in your example the instructions read that you would Purl 2 for the smallest size but you would purl for 3 stitches for the next size, and 5 stiches for the next two size. You may want to watch that section of the video for a more full explanation on how to read the instructions for multiple sizes. I hope that helps.

My pattern says knit 3 rows even. It's during instructions for a heel. Every row has two M1, then after all those it says knit 3 rows even. What Does that mean? And then for large it says repeat last 4 lines. Does that mean repeat one increase row and the "knit 3 rows even"? I know I did it wrong, because the next instruction is to pick up 19 stitches and knit them, and there seems to be only 7. Thank you for any help.

Hi Sophia. It is difficult to give advise on a knitting pattern without seeing the entire pattern and the context in which these instructions are given. But from what you are telling me, my GUESS is that if you have been knitting several rows that includes a M1 increase, then they say "knit 3 rows even" you are probably instructed to knit the next 3 rows without any increases, so just knitting all stitches. And then when they give instructions for a large size indicating to repeat last 4 lines, that would probably be as you thought, the last row of your increase row plus the 3 knitting rows without increases. If this still doesn't seem to add up with your picking up 19 stitches, you may want to try to reach out to the pattern designer if that is a possibility and ask them for an explanation. Again without following the pattern myself with some yarn and needles in my hand to do some hands on figuring out, it's difficult to truly identify what the true intentions of the designer are. @@jacqknits Thank you so much! It's an "easy" pattern, but out of print, about 50 years old. And appantly I'm not that experienced. I've knitted a few sweaters and many dish cloths. If your idea doesn't work, maybe i can figure out a way to contact knitters who have completed the slippers, through Ravelry. Thank you again! 😊❤

Hi Jacquline! I'm just starting my project and am a bit confused. The instructions are "Rows 1-5: [K1, P1] (Rib stitch) to end". Does that mean I have to K1 & P1 until I reach row 5 for the rich stitch or does that mean I have to alternate between K1 & P1 for each row so row 1 would be K1 and then R2 would be P1 and then switch until rib stitch? Please let me know! Thank you!

Thanks for the question. The rib stitch is comprised of knitting one stitch, then purling one stitch and repeating that till the end of the row. So when it says for Rows 1-5 (K1, P1), that means you will K1 stitch, then P1 stitch and repeat that two stitch repeat till the end of the row and then repeat that row for a total of 5 times. You will then have 5 rows of ribbing. Then you will follow whatever stitch pattern they call for row 6 etc. I hope that helps. Happy knitting!!

It appears that there is a small repeat section within a larger repeat. I'm also assuming that in a previous row the pattern directed you to place a few stitch markers. So I believe you would do the following. You would knit two together, then purl two together. Then you would K1 and P1 and repeat that K1,P1 till you reach the next stitch marker. Then you would repeat that entire sequence again for the remaining of the row or round. I hope that is helpful and makes sense. Good luck on your project!!

Does being left handed really affect how the left hander is suppose to read the pattern?

That is a great question. Knitting left handed is in essence knitting a mirror image of the knitted piece. I agree. There are some patterns that are complicated. I usually review the entire pattern first and if there are sections which I don’t understand or can follow I move on to another one. There are so many patterns out there that I won’t frustrate myself with an unclear pattern.

Greetings, I don't understand what this part of the instruction means, the part in quotations: With A, cast on 15 sts, place marker, cast on 1 st, place marker, "cast on 15 sts - 31 sts." Please help 😊

This is telling you how many stitches to cast on and telling you to place a stitch marker in certain places. So it says with Color A (this pattern must be in multiple colors), cast on 15 stitches. Then place a stitch marker, then cast on 1 stitch, place another stitch marker, then cast on 15 more stitches so you have a total of 31 stitches. Hope that helps.

Purl is one of the foundational stitches for knitting. Most of knitting is a combination of either knit or purl stitches to create a particular stitch.
