Australian citizen here. Be prepared to line up at the university charity for food. The cost of living is currently extremely high, rental houses are almost impossible to find, especially in the capital cities, and the average job you will find is one where the business owner tries to rip you off because you don't know your rights. Just take a look at the average rent in Sydney. Then calculate how much you can earn doing 24 hours of work a week at minimum wage. Assume the boss won't tell you you're entitled to breaks, superannuation or training. That might tell you why food banks and charities are currently being overrun with demand from people, including international students. And God help you if you need medical help, you aren't covered by Medicare so be prepared to pay a large sum for a simple Dr appointment.

Hi, I am a bit confused. You have mentioned that 48 hours/fortnight still applies even if you are on mid-semester break. However, I have visited my school website and it states that on mid-semester break, "Unlimited work rights provided not enrolled in shorter terms". Can you please enlighten me about this?

Good question. Mid semester break is between 6th &7th week or something similar. The break between semester when a semester end is when you have school holidays. Hope this helps.

Hey friend, thanks for getting in touch. It was the case that masters students dependent can work full-time work hours before unlimited work hours came into effect. And it should not be different now. We actually got the information about it from university of Melbourne website. They are the top university in Australia, so they can't be wrong. Hi. I have just finished my final semester waiting for results on 28 June 2023 . I am planning to apply for the 485 visa in July. I already have a full time job offer in the field of my study starting 4 july 2023. But now because of the student visa restriction my employers mentioned that I can only work 48 hours a fortnight. I have been working for them since nov 2022 as a casual contract employee. So since I have graduated shouldn’t I be entitled to work unlimited as I have no school in session now ? Thanks a lot friend for your encouraging words. It seems that you are eligible to work unlimited hours in Aged care but honestly we can't comment if you can work 48 hours in hospital or not. One another student had another similar question regarding this as they work in aged care and other work place as well. We really hope the government give some clear guidelines on this before 1st July 2023.

Hi @@kezangchoden703, I still didn't get any concrete information. I already call Immigration home affairs. They've advised me to ask and consult an immigration agent. I've also asked an agent but they are also not so sure about the answer. They told me that it was a gray area so they advised me to choose between hospital or aged care sector. One of the agents advise me to give up my work in the hospital and work in the aged sector unlimited.😔

That's a very good question and many students seems to have a similar situation. For now, we honestly don't have an answer for this. You can work unlimited hours in Aged care if you were already working on 9th May 2023. We will keep you posted as soon as we hear something about it.

You lets know students cannywork midterm break. But i got 1 month uni break for july as my 3rd semester finished june30 and my next semester will start from august. I called uni and ask about working hour and they let me know im allowed full time as i have sem break.

Mid semester break is different than the end of term break. Mid semester break is during the term while you are studying. Usually it is 1 week break.

Ideally, you will need to learn some skills and get jobs with higher pay rates. Lots of jobs in trades pay really well.

My daughter is on a student visa 500, and works part time 45 hours fortnightly. However, she got another casual job that is directly aligned with her master's degree study. Hence, can she do around 4-5 hours on weekends without claiming or raising any invoices for that job? This means she will work but not claim any money for it. Please suggest me. Kind Regards.

She does a 5-6 hours job occasionally (fortnightly), but she is not drawing money from the company due to the restrictions of working hours.
