Words of Encouragement Can Last a Lifetime | Glennie Burks | TEDxMuskegon

Col. Burks' talk will take you a journey from the impossible to triumph; his journey through life while clinging on to one sentence uttered by his sixth grade teacher over 40 years ago. Words of assurance influenced a child to defeat, and note be defined by, the odds.
With the odds stacked against him as a child, Col. Glennie Burks took the words of his sixth grade teacher to heart. He credits her encouragement for carrying him not only through high school and college graduation, but on to victory in the United States Army. He is the Deputy Assistant Commandant at the US Army Military Police School, and has served as Army commander, battalion S3 and Inspector General. Col. Burks has completed two tours of duty in Iraq.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was so impressed with your words about your journey as a young boy that the words of one 1 person in your young life had such a profound impact on your life and those words stayed with you for a lifetime. Your teacher saw you and heard you; he knew your potential. And I am sure he touched and inspired so many other young lives, and now you are doing the same thing; changing and inspiring others through your words and your actions. We all need to make the same small steps in our lives to tell people their worth and that they are going to be OK.

Awesome presentation COL Burks! I lived a similar situation in JROTC. SFC Rodney Thorne encouraged me to apply for an ROTC scholarship and boy am I glad I listened. Sometimes you need someone else to believe in you until you can believe in yourself. Thank you or sharing your wisdom.
