As a welder I have been exposed to fumes and dust for 50 years it’s only in the last 10 years employers have been legally obliged to provide protection my father was a cabinet maker/ joiner he always got a chest infection after working with Mahogany as an apprentice the only masks were ones called Martingale’s which were merely cotton wool pads🥺

It's really good that employers now have to consider their employees health and wellbeing. Cotton wool pads must of felt horrible once they got all damp from being breathed on!

Cracking video m8 most people me including certianly do over look it. Ive just shared the video to my socials to try get it and you more exposure. That was really good video. Wish i could afford one the space helmets i have a face shield for turning and grinding etc but like you i have beard so getting a mask to fit properly is a problem. Thanks for the information Alex,. I have the FFP 3 mask, and use a shop vac and cyclone for the big stuff, indoors, but I much prefer to work outside if I can.

You’re welcome John, I hope the video was useful. Seems like you’ve got a good system in place - although nothing quite beats the feeling of working outside in the sun and fresh air!

I think it's also important to say, that any mask and filter is better than not using a mask at all. I'm sure we've all been there. We want to do something, didn't expect it to be so dusty and don't have a high quality mask at hand. If you don't have any highly rated mask and not doing the work is not an option (as should be the first choice), please use the best thing you have. A FFP3 mask is better than a surgical mask, a surgical mask is better than some cloth, some cloth is better than just holding your breath and just holding your breath is still better than breathing normally. If you absolutely have to put yourself in danger, PLEASE try to minimize the danger as much as anyhow possible. Also try to remember what kinds of work could be dangerous to you. - cleaning the top of dusty cabinets - using cleaning sprays - vacuuming dusty areas - moving thing in/to the attic - a lot of woodworking tasks - etc.

Useful video ,Alex. I'm always wiping down surfaces in my workshop from fine sawdust. Scary to think im breathing that stuff in. New PPE me thinks!

An alternative is also to use hand tools more. Apart from less dust, there's also the advantage of the exercise doing more for your lungs than a mask. Outside for table saw, inside hand tools will greatly improve your environment. A sharp plane will always leave a better surface than a sander and with no dust. However if youre more a plywood/mdf/chipboard worker its a different situation. Its the darth vader system then.

Really good point thank you - I do a lot of hand tool woodworking and didn't even think to consider adding that in!

I've been using the cheap throwaway masks (and to be honest, I've been using the same one for ages!). After watching this, I think I'll add an FFP3 mask to my shopping list.

something I've always wondered about these is, do they cool you down too? I work pretty hot so my mask usually gets pretty disgusting after more than a few hours, but I could see getting one of these if they can keep me cool and safe!

The air that gets pumped in is refreshing but not quite air conditioning! I definitely got less sweaty/gross then I did just wearing an FFP style mask and found that it kept the sun off my head too which was an added bonus! Downside is it takes a bit of getting use to having the breathing tube and battery pack attached. Hope that helped bud 👍
