From the color and the ease with which it turns, I am going to guess olive. And since you say rare, possibly wood from the Holy Land.

I'm gonna guess Tetraclinis articulata, sometimes known as sandarac or thuja, a north African wood famous for its rare and beautiful burl en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraclinis

That has to be one of the most unusual turns I have ever seen, the wood is amazingly craggy and, I love that you worked with the voided areas, and left them as part of the finished work. I have said this before, but I have no idea how you see what you are doing brother. Just watching you made my eyes go buggy. Beautiful brother, beautiful.

What a stunning piece. I kept expecting you to fill the voids with resin and then hollow it but no. I'm amazed it held together. I was thinking it might be olive wood but I've never seen olive wood that looks fibrous as when you chiseled off the nubbin from the bottom. The only " wood " that fibrous that I've ever seen is hemp and that is basically compressed and stabilized. I wish I had your insight. Beautiful man, just beautiful.... Keep turning, Bill Riley.
