    Idea: If your camera allows, try matching the framerate to the spin of the wood, so that it appears to move in slow motion as you're carvnig (like how helicopter blades look still/move slow in those YT videos even though they're spinning fast). The unnatural edge would look spectacular as the shape develops in "slo-mo" as you're working. Your video on the vase with the magnificent grain would have looked insane if the grain and shape was slowly revealed this way. Might take a bit of experimenting, but results will be incredible! Keep em coming :)

  • @JackMackWoodturning

    @JackMackWoodturning

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yo V, I have experimented a lot with this. I can make the wood look entirely static or appear to move backwards. Only problem is, as soon as the chisel touches the wood the lathe rpm changes. The pressure will never be perfectly consistent so the visual effect is hard to maintain. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

    I thought the wood was green! I haven't yet had the courage to turn a green vessel, and finish it as well...I think it might need to wait till I can turn a wall as thin as yours!

    Cheers Matt, it’s like anything mate, you do it enough times and you can predict how it’s coming out. I’m working on an instructional video for how to plan a natural edge bowl. Lots of people just throw them on the lathe and deal with what comes out.. but there are methods of approach that mean you can make it work in your favour. Thanks for the continued support buddy, always nice to have your input and feedback 🤙🏻

    Beautiful. Fun to watch. Would you consider briefly holding the tool you will be using up to the camera so we can see which one you have chosen? What type of finish are you using in the squirt bottle? I'd love to see the can/bottle of the original brand/type. Thanks so much for the fun!

    Thanks. I’m working on some tutorial videos in which il cover all these things and in the mean time il always answer any questions about the process. Most often I use a bowl gouge with a swept back 55 degree grind and the squeeze bottle is home made shellac sealer. Tutorial videos should be coming soon so hit the subscribe button if you want to be notified when they drop. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

    Cheers Peter, yeah the pith will be fine. It’s all about tension and weak points. If you remove the tension by making the walls thin and you make them even thickness throughout the most you should see on a bowl like this would be minor warping. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

    Looks great. Was the wood wet (>12% moisture)when you turned it? Just curious if you had to manage the possibility of it cracking.

  • @JackMackWoodturning

    @JackMackWoodturning

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate. Yeah it was way over 12%, at a guess I’d say 30%-40% I don’t worry about cracking these days, Away from these videos my day job/business involves turning 1000s of green turned bowls per year. The trick to no cracks is simply consistent and thin wall thickness and a smooth and even transition from wall to base. Tension causes cracks, so the more material you remove the less stored tension you have, thin walls warp rather than split. Don’t get me wrong, the odd bowl still splits here and there but it’s always because I’ve left too much meat on the bones 😊👍🏻
