Woodturning: The Myrtle Kiss
Ойын-сауық
This amazing piece of myrtle burl was the subject of a concept I have wanted to try for quite some time. Given the unique shape of this burl cap, it was difficult to reveal a gentle curving shape while also maintaining some of the more interesting features of the natural edge and wood grain. It was a delicate balancing act of approaching the final form one millimeter at a time until the shape felt correct. In the end, I was left with one of the most annoying sanding jobs of my life, trying (and mostly failing) to avoid those nasty points and edges, being relegated to hand sanding for upwards of 6 hours. When my wife saw this piece for the first time, she said it looked like a meringue or a Hershey Kiss, hence the title!
Please let me know what you think of this piece by leaving a comment below! I cannot always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one. I always appreciate feedback, positive or negative.
A lot of people as where I find unique wood and burls to turn. I won this particular myrtle burl cap in an Instagram auction by @worldwide_burl. Check him out! He has daily burl auctions.

I've seen you make a lot of beautiful stuff, David. I do believe this one tops them all. And perhaps it's just my own prejudice, but I love the fact that no epoxy was used in the making of this masterpiece. Superb!

Once again you have shown your creativity and love in being a “woodie” I have been watching your videos for a while now, and each just blows my mind. Mother Nature is proud of you ten fold.
Absolutely beautiful wood grain. The finial placed inside is different, I like it.

I loved it up until the finial, which I thought looked contrived, extraneous and misplaced and ruined the piece. My opinion only.
Just in case no one mentions it, your camera work is just as good as your lathe skills! I loved watching both!!!

I'm amazed that you can look at raw piece of wood and see what you will turn it into be before you even start to work on it. A true gift. Your videos are very entertaining. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

I would give this to my future wife to house her ring, “ just like this wood I want our bond to grow old and blossom into something desirable despite the age” this is what I gather from this video if it were my possession to obtain. You stir emotion with your videos sir without a word “you have a strong positive spirit about you” thank you……..!
Myrtle is definitely one of my favorites. Once I saw both pieces together, I saw an orchid. Now I can’t unsee it. Stunning, gorgeous piece of work. I absolutely love it.
I am definitely getting the feel of your older work with this one. It reminds me of why I fell in love with your work to begin with. Beautiful!

Truly breathtaking, David! Watching you think out, adjust, create, and put on finishing touches to your creations is startling! That you could somehow see the transformation in your mind is beyond me. How does that happen? I’m guessing it’s years of experience plus an assortment of successes and failures along the way. It’s a family gift that’s been passed on for generations…..right? Thank you for sharing. It’s given me a bit of new perspective of the world around me…. especially after watching the “olive disaster.” I’m sure the price tag on these creations is exorbitant, so I’ll just keep on with your videos, of which I’ve only seen two so far! 😊
Amazing! I love the purity of your work.

Does anyone else watch these to go to sleep? I’ve been watching wood turning videos for the past couple months to fall asleep. I needed something new added to my ASMR, Bob Ross and rain sounds 😂
