Woodturning Hawaii’s Invasive Species! 🌴
Ойын-сауық
This Hawaiian Kiawe wood is used as cooking/smoking firewood, which supposedly imparts tropical flavors to grilled or smoked meats! The more you know...
Thank you all so much for watching! This is my 27th filmed project, and it was quite a beast! Not only was this wood far more dense and hard than I anticipated, but it also was completely end-grain, which meant my Tormek sharpener worked overtime. It wasn't until late in the making process of this piece that I realized there was dust behind the lens of my camera, so I sent it off for cleaning and repairs. Sadly, that means I am without a decent video camera for a few weeks. So if my next upload is a bit late, then that will mean it has taken ages to get my camera back... Yep, first world problems...

I am a retired Senior Master of Art (Teaching) in South Australia & until now I have ben a silent viewer of your really great work. This piece is a real piece of Art from a lathe, a piece that deserves to be on display as a piece of Art, not just as another woodturning bowl. Rather than just watch your great skill in woodturning, I would love to hear you as you talk your way through a project. I do love your work, I would rather you produce a 'sound' video rather than a 'silent' video. Great piece of woodturning Art & beautiful 'finish'. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

I noticed your wife does your website. Though your beautiful pieces are beyond my budget, I am grateful to watch you at work creating them. You two make a great team!
Beautifully done. I had my doubts at first you could pull it off. Glad you proved me wrong. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
The color of that wood is amazing. It's like sunshine in a tree. You did it justice.
Some of the best photography I've ever seen in woodturning videos. Beautiful project. True work of art.
At the beginning of this video I thought the wood was going to fly off of the lathe! I do like this masterpiece without the bark! And what a masterpiece you have created! Your talent has me on overdrive because I have not seen such gorgeous work over and over again! This is amazing work! You are blessed with a special kind of talent that is inspiring to many!! Bravo!

You didn't appreciate wood deeply before? Sad.
This is a really fantastic piece of art that you've created. Truly amazing how you can find such a beautiful object waiting inside a chunk of wood for someone to let it out.

Absolutely stunning . What a beautiful piece of wood that is.
All wood is beautiful, but that particular type is spectacular. The grain and colour are sublime.
David your humility is exemplary man! With such a good talent, people shove down other's throat those pesky subscribe buttons, bells and jingles. But watching your videos is like watching a nice relaxing movie. You and your work are both amazing! Thank you for creating this wonderful channel!

Most beautiful wood and the piece is spectacularly beautiful. Thank you so much.
The initial phases of this video had me sitting back from the screen.....I thought your lathe was going walk out the door and take a stroll by the lake! I wish I could afford to send you another invasive and beautiful species of wood...the Rainbow Eucalyptus...which is plentiful here where I live on Kauai. Beautiful craftsmanship as always....best wishes and stay healthy.

You did a super great job David on that kiawe and I know you had fun with all that end grain!!... cuz it is so dense, but also it’s awesome in its coloration and grain structure, and takes a beautiful finish as you did with this piece. Like the shape and turned out wings. It makes it different!! Awesome job my friend!!👍👍👍👍✌️

Thank you John! Yeah this one was tough and it took me a while to realize I needed to stick with a simple-ish concept rather than pimping it out with say a pedestal foot or even a lid/finial. Sometimes less is more! ✌️
I do love these lily-petal bowls. Man, this one fought with you at first! Thought the (old) lathe was going to walk away.
Just a perfect finish. Well done once again.
