Woodturning Square Bowl From Venezuelan Saman

I received this wood from a friend who had traveled and lived in Venezuela. He had returned with a "bookcase" of beautiful wood, saman. He was moving and need to find a new home for the wood. The wood was already 12" square and 2" thick. I trimmed it to remove dings in the edges.
Mounted with hot melt glue, I turned a mortise. But at the last minute, the hot melt glue failed. Why? too heavy, too little glue, operator error? I had other difficulties but continued until I now have a square bowl, almost a platter.
It is still almost 12" square, finished with wipe-on poly.
Beautiful wood.
Enjoy.

Alan, that's a great-looking bowl from beautiful wood. My only critique would be that probably 80% of that beautiful wood ended up as wood shavings. 😞 That 12 x 12 x 2 inch slab would have yielded 48 excellent pen blanks, each one 6 x 1 x 1.

I know this is a little after the fact, but I happened to watch Eli in Portland and was wondering if you had a template of these arcs either in your blog or in somewhere in the files you could forward along 🤞🏻🙏🏻

I did not attend that session but saw him do it many years ago. He does not use a template. Alan

@@AsWoodTurns I was referring to the printed template as shown in your video

@@DerekCadmus Eli used a 9" circle to define the curvature of the side that would then match his padded jam faceplate. For the actual arcs, he loosened the chuck and cocked it before re-tightening the chuck. His replay is out on the AAW now for you to confirm. Alan
With whom, exactly, are you sharing the blame?

The other possibility is the wood. Actually still me. :( Alan
