Finally bit the bullet and made a sharpening station that was featured in WoodWorkers Journal magazine. Using a Harbor Freight Husky 8” variable speed grinder and one of their tool stands. I’ve had the Wolverine sharpening jigs for sometime but never really set them up properly. Reground a 1/2” bowl gouge at 55 deg with swept back wings. What a difference a properly setup system does and how easy it was to repair the grind on this gouge. I’m amazed! I have more gouges to repair. Now to make chips fly…….

Hello Kent, i have done that with europian Cherrywood. I will hope that the bowl will not crack. We see it after a while of time is running through. Great video and a very good bowl..

Kent at some point I think your viewers would appreciate your views on lathes - not brands but best turning speeds for all parts of the turn. Additionally, your views on having a lathe that has the ability to produce torque at lower speeds - overall your views on desired speeds at different times of a turn. BEAUTIFUL BOWL!

Kent I always learn a Lot from your videos. You are a excellent teacher. However I have to say I have tried the tried and true danish oil without the wax and I thought it made my bowl smell. I tried to ignore the smell but I eventually had to coat it with shellac to seal in the oder and I actually liked the shine even more than the oils dull finish. As a beginner wood turner it’s because of your videos I took the next step in turning and replaced my carbide scrapers with a few gouges and have a nice sharpening system right next to my lathe. I am getting more skilled with each piece I make so I wanted to thank you for helping me gain some confidence. Keep up the good work as you are helping a lot of us reach new levels. Be well

I turned a crotch wood piece with 3 branches merging, so in essence 3 pith areas. It was aged wood and there were no stress cracks.. As I turned it the cracks showed but I stabilized each and gave it several coats of thin Danish oil and no new cracks developed. I have used this method since and it givesme a lot more usable bowl wood. Thanks for this great video.

Hey Kent, Beautiful bowl. The grain is awesome. I have found that a lot of folks dont mind cracks because it fits to nature. Some folks do mind them though. What nobody likes is rough spots so while I do work on cracks my biggest focus is on making it smooth even if it looks rough. Anyway thanks for the video. Yall have a wonderful day.

Hi Kent, I always look at your videos with a great pleasure. I just want to add for possible French followers, that "Ligustrum vulgare" French name is "Troène commun", a common bush in parks and European garden centers; but it remains generally too little for making bowls. Thanks for your videos.

My brother just gave me 3 cypress pieces about 14” diameter and 24” long. They’ve sat protected on the ground for 2 years in high humidity, and I just put them in low humidity to dry out more. They are slightly spalted, but ZERO cracks. I’m totally going to try this.

Relatively new turner, have around 50 bowls under my belt. The overall majority have been twice turned. I did however do a once turned out of Basswood for a former coworker. It has been a few months now and I need to get over there and see how much his bowl has changed. Or if it in fact, is still a one piece bowl!

When I worked at a craft centre the owner on a few occasions came in the workshop and said are you going home today, I was completely engrossed on the piece I was turning, one job I had I never clock watched.

Newbie question but why not start near the center and pull or push cut out to the edge and avoid tsking all those hits while cutting air?

Thanks. It's important to follow the directions. Original and Danish have slightly different applications. Just read and follow. I've seen people not follow and the results aren't as good. Happy Turning!

Rather than lacquer, could you use sanding sealer instead before CA?

Your comments on end grain drying also applies to lean meat cuts. You have to know the grain of the steak and where to apply the heat so it is evenly cooked and tender. Same techniques.

Hey Kent - It doesn't appear you did anything extra to stabilize the bark. Is that because of the species or some other factor? For example, I've had bark on walnut want to separate after only a few months - maybe because of the large amount of sap wood?

What is the bevel angle on your detailed spindle gouge?

The spindle detail gouge is about 40-45° This one is not as precise as the bowl gouge because I sharpen freehand and I'm really only looking for a nice pointed tip. Happy Turning!

why does your live center not have a point. is it better so that it doesnt plunge into wet wood?

I hate that I have to come onto a KZread video to post this but I kind of feel like I am out of options. I have been sending emails for going on three weeks now to kw(at)turnawoodbowl to get my password restored so that I can get into the "Woodbowl Turning Start to Finish" eCourse. I purchased that course on Nov 28, 2020, but, life getting in the way with COVID, a huge re-org at work, and my wife getting diagnosed with cancer and being hospitalized, I was never able to find the time to start the course. Life is slowing returning to normal (a new normal) so about a month ago I tried to log onto the course but my password was no longer recognized and the password reset function no longer recognized my email address. To this date and many emails later, it has been nothing but crickets. I went onto the course page and posted a very non-confrontation message asking if there was another email address or way that I could contact him to resolve my issue and I got the standard "Your message is awaiting review" (don't hold me to the actual verbiage). I kept checking back and realized that my message evidentally didn't pass muster and was never posted so here I am now on KZread trying to get what should be a very easy issue resolved. BTW, in the time that I have been trying to contact Kent, I have received at least three emails from kw(at)turnawoodbowl: “What Are Those Lines on My Bowl", "Free Gift of Wood Bowl Turning Language", and "AHBCs - They DIDN'T Teach in School" so evidently his automated system has no problem finding me but customer service (Kent) does.
