I am 74 yrs old, needless to say, retired, and just purchased a Jet JWL1221VS that I built a stand for and mounted it. I have a 12 x 24 shop, and have all my tools on wheels. My first bowl started just after the new year 10" dia white oak which I got from a sawmill as "firewood" for free. It was outside, and after I cut it in half sat in my heated shop for about a week before I cut it to basic shape with my bandsaw and mounted it on my new lathe and started turning. Not being familiar with the process since high school, I watched several video's on KZread and just jumped in and started. Your video is excellent and boy did I find out alot of things I was doing wrong and lots of new ways to make bowls. I have purchased a Rikon slow speed, 8" grinder to sharpen my tools, and have gotten a diamond card which is what I have been using while I wait for the Rikon to be delivered the end of the month. I have ordered the same system you show in this video after seeing it on other video's and reading articles etc...(google is your friend). I plan to watch more of your video's and am planning to make some segmented bowls next.

I have picked up turning some, well since wood shop back in 78-79. My brother in law one day brought home a SEARS 1970 lathe, just little 1/3 hp. Well, that was two months ago, Wood shop is back. I am turning anything and everything. I started with little sticks from the fallen trees to make light houses then moved up to 10-12 in lighthouses, so cool Then onto larger branch cups from Maple. Now expanding to cut blanks from large logs then shape bowl blanks and now turning bowls, I just ordered my first bowl gouge and I just got a chuck configuration for this lathe. We are moving forward into 21st Century. I found your channel and appreciate your work and especially the tenon video. You also helped me with taking chatter out of the inside of the bowl. I do hope to see the video on removing the tenon and more. Thank you for sharing. I have done while in captivity 1 hickory, bowl 1 maple bowl, 1 popular bowl, 2 maple cups and 2 ash bowls with 5 ash bowl blanks ready and a bunch of birch blanks. Its great to have a wood shop again. Thanks. Bob

I am of the age that needs to be "protected" from this virus. So, I am doing more turnings---both spindle and bowl. I am limited bowl turnings because my lathe is a 10X14 (larger lathe in the picture later this year, I hope). Your technique and style of instruction gives me confidence that I can learn to turn beautiful bowls. So, after I watch your video, it is back to the workshop and the lathe. Getting on the lathe also protects me from honey-do's---somewhat. Thanks for all your videos.

Ken that was an awesome video. I enjoyed listening to your thought processes and explanations while watching you turn. It was full of valuable information and I gained many tips which will help me in my own turning projects. Currently, I’m setting up my workshop with an older lathe which I refurbished last fall so that I could turn at home. I’ve processed some bowl blanks from red pine, red oak, white birch and a spalted sugar maple. On the lathe now, I’m working with a piece of old very dry cherry, complete with checks and cracks which I have been able to repair thanks to your website. So, many thanks and stay safe.

Thanks for making this video and your instructive teaching. You put the cookies on the bottom shelf where anyone can reach them. You took a regular blank ,similar to what any turner probably finds , and showed how to deal with its flaws. You really do a great job of explaining the process in easy to understand concepts and actually moved the camera to give us the best point of view. I have been away from my lathe for a few years, but with all this free time am turning bowls again. I am familiar with the ditch digging rim to center method but watching you pointed out a few mistakes I’ve been making. Thank you, looking forward to seeing what you’ve posted and what’s to come.

I know I am coming late to this party, just had this pop up in my feed and I like your videos, so I hit play. it has been many years since I had access to a lathe, until last month. My son and I do a lot of things together, including wood and metal projects in the garage/shop. about a year and a half ago, while I was down at the VA hospital for 3 weeks for some tests and treatments, someone broke into the garage and used my carts, and rolling work table to steal almost all of my tools. we have been working to replace what we could since. last month my son used his savings to buy an inexpensive lathe ( Central machinery 18x33) all we had on hand were some 3" aspen dowels so we have been making shot glasses, and some gnomes and mushrooms. we are hoping to get some better wood soon, and really want to get into much bigger projects. last week a buddy gave me some 8/4 redwood beams, that we are going to try and make some small bowels with.

Thank you Kent for your videos, it has been a tremendous help in my learning to properly turn bowls safely. So far I have turned a couple of lampshades Lol. Also a couple of small bowls out of oak firewood. I recently turned an oriental 4 corner bowl out of Ambrosia Maple with an ogee bottom for my daughters masters graduation present and a 6" x 4" bowl Shag Bark Hickory which was really hard wood. All these turnings have been successful due to you and other wood turners videos, but especially your fine explanations. Thanks again. Keep them coming and "Happy Turning."

Watching from South Africa. I cannot tell you how much I have learnt today. Your method really added so much clarity to my really steep learning curve. Your first video, where you spoke about your Coach, inspired me so much that I am trying my best to replicate something similar back home. If you were a touch closer I would have tried to convince you of becoming my coach. Personally I have been focusing on pepper mills, using "crushground" mechanisms, as these presented less pitfalls for a novice who only started 3 months ago. Bowl turning for me is still in an embryo phase and needs a lot of training.

Kent, Very interesting. I’m new to turning, I’ve made two small simple bowls. The one thing I really noticed was when first started turning the outside cuts it was really rough. The first time that happened to me it really startled me. My tools aren’t the quality of yours, but they work. What I learned was to just go really slow and take my time. You showed me the right way to proceed with the cuts. I’ve watched some of your other video’s and their very will done. I learn by watching and they’ve helped me. Thanks, I be watching. I like your approach. rd

In the words of Wendell Berry, "The best teachers teach more than they know." I learned so much more from this almost live video than from an edited video. Seeing how you dealt with the issues as they arose was more informative than just seeing what tools you used and how you made the planned cuts. I hope you can do another of these.

Lately I haven’t been able to turn the last thing I did was a black walnut bowl. I’m a disabled Cold War veteran with a 100% service connected disability needless to say I don’t walk very well . Th VA took all the pain medication away from me 4years ago and I have been trying to finger out a way I can move wood from one end of the shop to the other without me picking it up, my bandsaw is on one side and my lathe is on the other I also have a bell plainer that can do a pice of wood about 18 x 20 or24 I need to re wire it but such is life you have a great day.
