Amazing ! How old is this river oak ?
@JackMackWoodturning
2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure of the age of the tree but this wood was apparently buried in the silt of the river Tyne for near 100 years..it came from a very large piece so I’d guess it fair to say 200-250 years from sapling.

@@JackMackWoodturning ...I had looked up River Oak prior to sending my previous comment and found it's an actual tree native to Australia...scientific name is Casuarina cunninghamiana...so, I'll just stick with River Oak... That said, I'll also believe your explanation as oak lying in a river for years would almost have to take on different properties and have it show up in the grain... Enough of this...it's a beautiful piece!

I appreciate you saying that John. Thank you for watching mate. This wood was said to have been buried in the silt of the Tyne river for up to 100 years, I have no way to know exactly how old it is but the colour kind of speaks for it’s self. Whatever it’s history, it’s very fine and very rare wood. I have a pretty large chunk of this so we should be seeing more of it in the near future. This was a sample piece I was given before committing to buying the whole stump.

Hi Kathy. Yes I do have a rather vast pile of offcuts. You never know what might come in handy, thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
Beautiful wood and design. What bowl gouge you use and grind? I find Oak hard and you seemed to cut it like basswood.
@JackMackWoodturning
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. Oak shouldn’t really be hard to cut.. that is if you have a sharp tool. Both green and kiln dried oak are a beautiful for turning when your gouge is nice and sharp. I tend to use a 5/8” or 1/2” bowl gouge in the grand scheme of things the brand doesn’t really matter ( sure lots of people will like to argue this point) and the grind is fairly long swept back grind with a bevel somewhere between 55-60 degrees. The best advice I could give is two fold.. firstly get some CBN wheels on a slow speed bench grinder Set up with a sharpening jig. £300 -£400 And secondly go buy/barter as much green wood as you can get your mitts on and turn it all into shavings ( these can be composted, there’s no such thing as waste) don’t aim for finished pieces aim for papadelle sized shavings and wispy shavings from finishing cuts.. do this for a long weekend or two and I would be very surprised if that gouge doesn’t end up feeling like an extension of your arm. Practice and muscle memory are key.. don’t try to hard to be perfect, just keep adjusting your cutting edge presentation until the whole thing clicks for you.. Hope that helps. 😊👍🏻
That wood is fabulous! You need to try and get some more of it, even a small piece.

There is a rough barked 'River Oak' that grows in Northern Australia, usually while this wood is drying it stars or splits. Does this happen to your 'River Oak too?

This piece was pulled from the silt of the river Tyne, (this is a slice from a much bigger piece) it’s said to have been in the river for up to 100 years but I feel it’s likely much less time. The colour is what sets it apart.. this deep earthy brown colour is far from any normal oak. I haven’t worked with a lot of it so can’t really comment on the rest of the tree. The longer it lies though, the darker the colour becomes. Bog oak is almost black. Thanks for watching Rick
