Woodturning - Next level up-cycling, bed frame to bowl

The wood for this bowl has come from an old bed frame. Secondlife Recrafted, a great small business on the Central Coast of New South Wales sources a large range of timber. They up-cycle that timber into a range of hand made products including chopping and serving boards, bottle openers and pens to name a few. Recently they contacted me to see if I could use a couple of blanks to make some bowls for them. This the first of a number I will be making for them.
This timber, Queensland Maple, came from a retired cabinet maker named Terry who was based in South West Sydney. There was a bit of tear out as I turned the bowl, but after shear scraping I was able to get the rest out with some sanding. I have left the bowl unfinished as Secondlife Recrafted want to apply their own to it. The bowl is about 30 cm in diameter and 9cm deep. Thank you to SecondLife for this bowl blank.
This bowl will be available through www.secondliferecrafted.com

I use a WL-46A lathe from Hare and Forbes Machinery House along with a variety of chisels from different manufacturers.

Cool Bowl. It would be interesting to see it after Secondlife Recrafted put a finish on it.

I agree. I’ve got a couple more to make for them, I’ll definitely put some finish on them.

I did this same thing a couple months ago. The piece wasn’t anything but the ideas and pieces I have made since turned out great.

It’s a great source of timber, and a great way to upcycle. I was lucky to be given those blanks to turn.

What is the finish/Sanding sealer you used?

It is a shellac based sanding sealer. I make it myself from shellac flakes and alcohol. I usually apply at least two coats.
