Woodturning - Cracktastic Russian Olive Bowl

Ойын-сауық

I turned this spherical bowl from a piece of green Russian Olive wood. A friend gave me several pieces and I sealed most of them and set them aside to dry for a few years, but I was impatient to try one out, so I rough-turned this bowl leaving 1” walls and put it into an oven for 24 hours. As I expected, it cracked…and not in a pretty way.
Still, I like the grain of the wood and it made an interesting piece.

We share similar flora and fauna over here in Idaho, and tho russian olives do provide another striking color range of the natural palette, they are mostly seen a one of those natives that are a trash tree. I have seen some folks do some very imaginative and judicious pruning to make them more attractive in their landscapes. I never would have thought the finished results of turning the wood to be so fantastic. Thanx.

I thought you were crazy starting off the way you did… I was wrong, can’t argue with the result. Nice turning

Very nice, It's seems that your CA glue is black. Is it a special one? I am a beginner and sanding is some time very long. You used a turning machin, which kind of drill do you use? Thanks a lot David from France

Starbond makes a black CA glue which is very useful to have. I have a couple of drills. One Ryobi and one Mikita, but I usually just let the spinning action of the lathe do the work.

What did you spray on the bowl before the CA glue? I assume it was to prevent staining???
