Woodturning a Birdseye Maple & Walnut Bowl
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I enjoyed this project. I wanted to provide some contrast in this bowl by building different segmented sections, but allowing for it all to connect. I may have done it slightly different now that I can see it, but overall I'm pleased with it. I hope you enjoyed the process.

still one of my favourite pieces of all the u tube videos
Excellent piece!
It always makes me smile to watch the transformation from table saw to waxing the final product. Truly amazing. I love your choices in music too.

Beautiful work 👏!
Dan , thanks for the prompt reply, I totally understand what’s on paper. Doesn’t always “turn” out that way. As I said, I enjoy your ideas, keep making them, thanks, Chuck
Yours are the prettiest I've seen. What a talent!
Dan, I love that piece. It almost looks like something that might have been found on the shore of the Nile, from many years ago. Great art!
I love everything about this video the bowl is amazing and the sunny selection perfect! I have watched it many times and will watch it many more.
Beautiful bowl! Thanks for sharing.
This is beautiful. If you really want that grain to pop, use a handful of the shavings as it's spinning after you sand it all down. It will polish the wood even more, and make it shine before you put a finish on it. It cleans out the grain too. It works way better than 0000 steel wool for polishing hardwood.
This was one of the coolest videos I have ever watched! Thank you
beautiful piece!!!! I noticed it is a different segmented design and I like it... Thanks on how to build it!!!
Beautiful. It seems your imagination when it comes to these segmented designs is limitless.
Gorgeous bowl...love the Birdseye Maple!
Beautiful work my brother. Do yourself a favor and buy a variable speed lathe you deserve it and will love it. I had a Nova 1624 for three years and have upgraded to a Record Power 16'' Coronet. I love it, it's a heavy duty machine. I'm not pushing the Record Power brand, you just need a variable speed. I went with the Record Power because me and my wife are lefties and really love the rotating head. Plus I didn't need a 36'' lathe for turning bowls. This one sets right where my Nova was. I loved my Nova but after upgrading you couldn't give me another Nova 1624. But they are a decent lathe for the money. Have a good day and keep up the beautiful work.

Thanks for watching. Yep, I love my little Nova. The black box attached to the headstock is the variable DVR upgrade. I didn't always have it, but since installing, I really love it.
Bellissima.

Muy bonito fantástico 👍
Beautiful bowl and great soothing music. I'm still in awe of your segment cutting skills. You should sign in the mortise so your signature doesn't wear off.

Thanks Bill! Yes, you're right. However, I do spray a top coat to help it last.
I love your channel. Your videos are top notch and your work is absolutely amazing. I’ve been turning pens for over 20 years but haven’t done much other turning. You’ve inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and try something different. I think I’m going to have to get a second job in order to buy clamps though! 😂 Please keep the videos coming.
Very nice
Great job! People should know how difficult it is to get all the angles on the segments to fit together without any big ugly glue seams showing. You need to have some good geometry skills for that and clearly Dan has got it!
Hi Dan, Awesome bowl and I wish to make one like it. Is the cut list shown in the video accurate? How thick/wide are the space pieces between the segments? Do the cut lengths on the list factor in those space pieces? Any info will be appreciated! Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott, thanks for watching. Do you have the WoodturnerPro software by chance? If so, I can send you my plans via email attachment. Yes, the cut sheet is accurate. The spacer widths are 1/4" I think. And, yes those widths are factored in. Email me at danlivingston@comcast.net if you need any help.
so beautiful. How much does it cost?

Thanks for watching. I sell these for between $250 to $300.
I have noticed that you use a carbide tipped tool. How do you decide when to turn or replace the blade?
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft

Thanks for watching. It's just a matter of feel. Turners talk about "blade chatter" sometimes. If you're getting some chatter or tear out or a surface that's just not smooth, it's probably a good idea to rotate your carbide cutter. Also, a dull blade of any type is just not safe. Carbide blades can easily be sharpened again on a diamond plate. Just use a little window cleaner to help lubricate the plate.
If you don't mind me asking what program are you using to set this up for turning?

Your welcome, I enjoy watching your work, its inspiring. I have not et turned a bowl but you have inspired me to try.
Dan, I love the design of this bowl. However your plan for it seems to be missing a ring which makes it very confounding. I count a total of 11 rings in your plan, but the bowl is 13 rings. What’s up? Thanks, Chuck

Hi Chuck, well the plans were a little off on this one. As you saw on the video, I glued strips of walnut to maple to make some of the rows. As such, I counted the glued together strips as two rows, not one. That way, it helped me plan out things in my head. Sorry for the confusion. Happy Turning!
Nice job. However, my tutor gets at me for leaving the mortice on the bowl. He said it should be turned off so that it's not obvious how the piece was held, especially if entered in shows. Personally I like to leave it on so it can be used to put a new finish on it if need be.

Thanks for the feedback. I too prefer to leave the mortise.
Another nice creation. It would be helpful if you perhaps had 2-4 mins of audio at the very end where you summarize the good, bad, difficulties, what you might do differently, etc. A bit of wisdom from the master would be most appreciated. Keep on turning.

Tome cuidado, Dan
