D.J. Smearer Inc. Sawmill is located in Belledune New Brunswick, Canada. Specializing in birdseye & curly maple logs and lumber in many different grades. Music, Architectural, flooring, carving grade etc. All of our lumber is kiln dried ranging from 4/4 - 8/4 thickness, Rough or dressed.
Also, we carry new line of heat treated lumber species; birdseye maple, curly maple, curly birch, walnut, butternut & cherry.
Using a specially designed kiln, wood is heated at high temperatures, esentially ''cooking'' the lumber until the moisture is down to 4 to 6%. This process changes the characteristics of the wood by improving dimensional stability and the high heat chemically transforms sugars in the wood so they can't be digested by insects or decay organisms.
In addition the process produces uniform darker coloration throughout the thickness of the lumber. This makes it a great choice for outdoor or indoor usess where high humidity is present. The fact that there are no chemicals added during the process allows the company to offer the consumer a green alternative solution in a diversified market.
There are only about 15 facilities in North America who offer the service of heat treated lumber.
