Yeah, I watched this and finally decided to try it. Bought a small scotch eye drill. Check. Went to the woods. Check. Needed firewood so I dropped a decent sized tree (with this job in mind) so I now have my piece of wood. Check. Processed it. Check. Carved a handle for the tool. Check. Started drilling the first hole. HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!! I discovered I don't have enough ass anymore to do this kind of thing. I got between 1 and 2 inches in and my shoulders were just done. Also, you ain't kidding when you say there's a learning curve. Trying to hold the tool straight (on the angle I wanted) and still putting enough pressure on it to cut is a minor nightmare! Not giving up, just a project for a multiple day trip! Respect the skills and the arms! Now I know where the heck you got em!

Put a blind wedge in the legs before you drive them in. Leg gets loose a couple taps on the bottom tightens it up

Check the diameter of the pipe that the wooden handle goes through. I bet it´s the same diameter as the cut you do. Slightly sharpen one side, place on end of leg, whack it, done.

When you started drilling into the leg with the auger I thought you'd been on those mushrooms that make you high, but no, a very nifty trick. Nice work. Although you could drill a hole in a thin off cut and use the hole as a template, just offer it up to the end of the leg and draw/scribe the circle.

he could have just burned a hole too. like bushcrafting skills dictate. this is just using modern tools like an auger to drill a hole.

making 2 of your quick bipod or tripod with tall top arms or simply two Xs will make an adjustable bucky for guiding your angles to exactly what you want if you set the top in them

I carve the legs into a slight oval shape and align the long axis with the grain of the wood of the female part of the join to avoid having the wood split out as it dries

Dan. Your axe makes a ring/resonating sound. Mine does the same. Any way of stopping that? Also in PA over Xmas. Where are you located as in Poconos. Jeff.

JEFF ALLEN - OFF THE GRIDIRON the reason your ax rings is due to the hardness of the metal. You want it to ring!!!

@@JohnDoe-zl6phThanks for the advice. Super annoying but is a very old broad head shingle axe maybe? Over a hand span across the bit! Maybe if that good, I will over look it.

JEFF ALLEN - OFF THE GRIDIRON I have several axe's and you can tell which ones had a better hardening/metal by the way they talk to you when you're using them.

im sorry but 18:30 kinda made me laugh, if you have, your handy saw, your axe.....and the pause he made at the last item, and your auger...you can make this. Yes, cause everyone walks around with an auger with their camping gear XD I just love how he kinda thought to himself, (oh shit thats not a super commonly held item to have), but hey how about show us how we can burn holes into the logs using embers that work the same exact way. makes me want to do survivalist parody videos, ";now im gonna show you how to make furnature in the middle of the woods, first take your band saw, your skill saw and your power drill and your 2x4s and voila, here's a chair."

I carry one every time I camp. Though it's a much smaller and lighter weight version of what he's using. He's using what I'm fairly sure is a 2 inch wide auger with a 20ish inch length, thing must weigh 10lbs. But you can get a 1 inch wide 5 inch long one that weighs just under a pound. Far more practical, but admittedly a 2 inch diameter one like he has will let you make MUCH stronger constructs. This is easily worth the extra pound of weight to carry, as I can make furniture in just 15-20minutes, (I make my a tripod so it shaves a little time off, plus the smaller holes are easier and quicker to make.)

Okay... scotch-eyed augers are SOOOOO expensive... this is ridiculous... coalcracker Bushcraft should sell them and BREAK THE MARKET! Seriously though... it's a really useful tool, should not be that expensive, I checked for videos on how to make one, but I won't be soldering anytime soon.
