It takes a special project to tempt a conservator or craftsperson back into the uncomfortable space of not knowing exactly how to resolve a problem, of needing to stretch themselves beyond comfort, in a word; to grow. But here we are, diving head first into another quagmire full of hope and optimism.

Some are not complaints. They simply don't enjoy the videos with her as much. I don't care for a lot of the chatter those videos have, but I can just skip the chattering. It simply a preference. The ones I dislike are the people who comment on her hair or clothing. When her hair was orange, some commenter 'tsk tsked' her for not 'looking professional'. She hair and clothing is not any one's business but hers and Julian's (as he is her boss/mentor).
I really like to see the way you two interact. Julian educates and explains without patronising Kit, and she respects his experience without compromising the knowledge she already has. And they joke around too. I’m sure we don’t see the moments that get stressful, but seems like a really good working relationship.

I think the best life lesson that I've learned from this channel is when Julian talks about how damage they cause to the painting in removing the nails is not their fault. The fault lies with whoever decided to nail it in the first place. I remember the first time he said it (the dreaded scraping episode...which happens to be one of my all time favorites :) ) But I feel like that lesson has so many applications in real life. I've felt guilt so many times because a disaster landed in my lap that I couldn't fix. But the truth was, I didn't cause it, I'm just the last one in the chain of events that created it. This is such a good lesson about not feeling guilt when you are just doing your best in a bad situation.

It's not really a scam; the 'title' just means literally nothing. You're paying a company to print out a piece of paper and send it to you. If anyone thinks they're buying an official legal title from some established entity, then they will be disappointed. Just like those companies that say you can pay to 'name a star.' they aren't connected to any kind of regulatory system, so you're just paying them to pretend that you've named a star.
Established Titles has some issues that made other content creators drop them. Might look into that

Dude. DO NOT use Established Titles as a sponsor. Just look up "Scam" and "Established Titles".
I refurbish sewing machine cabinets, and I've seen and cursed all these crimes against wood as I've done my best to bring them back to beauty and function. I count myself lucky, though, because people have only had 125 years to mess them up--not 500! Great work as always!
Good choice to use hide glue because it's reversible by using heat. I personally would, after the piece is reconnected, put a red oak slab, to make a support to prevent the thin piece from cracking again. It's simply too thin and too porous. It only needs to be the same thickness as the piece is but it would add the necessary support. But than again, I'm a furniture restorer, not a restorer of delicate pieces like these. I'm really curious and fascinated to see how you choose to tackle this issue. I have to confess that I find myself binge watching your channel after work. I truly love your content and your channel.
I am disappointed with the comments section. Firstly, I do not understand the criticism of Kit. She is Julian's apprentice, and is there to learn. Does that mean we do not get to see fascinating work, because he is teaching her? Perhaps some people want him to skimp on her training so we get to see the interesting stuff. I suggest that anyone who struggles with videos like this goes elsewhere where they will be less offended. I do not understand the criticism especially because Kit seems to be a very nice person, someone with talent for her chosen career, and also someone who recognises and respects Julian's immense knowledge and expertise. My second disappointment is the number of "experts" who are telling Julian how to do his job. What annoys me the most is that often they appear to have not listened to a word he has said. Indeed, some have complained that there was too much talking, yet for many of us that is exactly what we want, in order that we understand what decisions have to be made, and how different choices can affect the final outcome. I'm certain many of us are here not to just go "ooh" and "aah" as the painting is cleaned, or missing paint replaced. Keep up the good work Julian, firstly of teaching me about your fascinating work, and secondly of passing your knowledge to the next generation of restorers. You are an excellent, and a natural teacher; I know, having trained many teachers over the years, how good you are at instructing us in the various aspects of your work.
YEA!!!!! I’ve been missing your videos. I so love watching the history you give on the paintings. Your talent is beyond measure.
I NEED a Kit Q&A where Julian has to leave the recording space and we get to ask her questions about herself and then about Julian 😂

Great to have Kit back! It is so refreshing when someone has a true interest in properly learning and honing a skill. This is how apprenticeships are supposed to work. The day that Kit can remove the small wad of cotton from Julian's hand will be the day we know Kit is ready for her own Washi Kozo.
Julian. One of the things you might take to conservation from the watchmaker is the way watchmakers remove the hands of a watch. In order to keep the tools used to remove the hands from damaging the face of the watch they either use a polyethylene bag or there is a paper card with a small slot cut out of the middle that goes over the dial and lets the stem protrude through it. Then they either use 2 "hand levers" or a special tool called a presto tool to remove the hands. Just a thought. That way the painting would be a bit more protected than just a blotter paper alone.
@emmakane6848
Жыл бұрын
Beside painting and tool conservation, I also enjoy watch restoration videos so seeing how the paper was slipping out from under their tools definitely made me wince too. I wonder if there is an email to contact on his website or something, because I remember a bunch of people pointing out the mattress tacking fabric on the last video series he did with Kit which might’ve been useful in determining it’s history more quickly. If not, I hope that someone in the patreon sees this and shared the idea.

I really enjoy Lady Kitt,I feel like she's asking questions we would ask and we're getting more knowledge about the painting and restoration process. It's a fun experience as a viewer.
Excellent work on the painting, as usual. Note: The titles thing has no legitimacy in Scots Law. If you want a pretty piece of paper that says you have a title they are much cheaper on etsy. -Scotland
I'm always delighted to see Kit show up for the trickier stuff. She's a great lens to see these through, as I imagine many of us viewers remember a great deal of what Julian has taught and are curious to learn more, just like her! Seeing her pick up on Julian's guidance in the small and subtle ways (like others have pointed out can be seen in the scraping part) is very heart warming. She's a great student, and Julian's a great teacher. I feel like the future of conservation is in good hands here!
I personally think Kit is a great addition. I enjoy learning MORE about restoration through their discussions on how to resolve various issues and a bit of humor just shows us another side to Master Julian. BTW, Master, I knew which technique you would use to glue the panels back together, I also enjoy furniture restoration.
Him saying "our studio" gave me chills. It's truly so amazing watching him and Kit work together and seeing her grow and learning with her
I am getting comfortable with Kit. I appreciate that she wants to learn. We are comfortable with just Julian. Change is uncomfortable until we get used to her presence. She is a huge help to Julian and his father was his mentor, now Kit is his pupil.
You’re a great teacher Julian. Those examples you put together of the different wood joins were cool visuals.
I love watching him interact with Kit. And I love the wood panel projects, so I'm on cloud 9 right now. But I really appreciate the conversation they have around 13 minutes in concerning how carefully you need to plan ahead of time and really think all of it through before you touch any tools. As my Pawpaw always said, "Measure twice, cut once." Meaning: Do all of your thinking before you do something you can't undo.

who knew that i would be hyped for a painting restoration video series like a new season of my favorite show just came out... i'm so excited for this!!
Examining this painting's scars suggests an interesting and unusual life for it. Those nails thru the front suggest to me that it, sort of hiding as a pauper rather than a prince, enriched and brought pleasure to a humble abode at some point in its long life. It makes me smile to imagine that. It being anonymously discovered and admired. Someone saying "no, don't break it down for firewood" or "don't turn it that way, put the pretty side facing into the room" or "well, look at this! I'll take it home and put it on the wall for Margaret. It'll be like a proper piece of art. Margaret loves pretty things." 500 years is a long life.
yay kit is back!! I love watching you and her interact, she asks (and gets asked) the questions we have as viewers so it really feels like there's someone 'on our team' in the room with you
This is probably the most complex piece of i've ever seen you work on. After 2 years of watching you, it's awesome learning from you and being able to appreciate even the complexity of a repair on something like this. 400 years is quite an impressive piece of history to recover.

Yay, Kit is back! I enjoy your back and forth’s so much and another wood painting? Wood you believe that I’m very excited?
Oh my gosh! I guessed the joint right at the beginning! I was like why not bevel it and then you don’t loose paint and you have a smooth surface! Awesome!
It's the same in archaeology. If we find something in the field that could be amazing, but we know we don't have the resources, technology or time to extract the most data we can, we have to make the hard but most ethical decision: register it and leave it be until the right time comes, even if it might not be ours.

This video series covering the conservation of this 575-year-old masterpiece is a masterpiece of a own. Amazing work Juliann and Kit
Had you considered using a scrollsaw rather than a bandsaw for cutting those small shapes? It allows more precise control, and doesn’t leave the rough blade marks a bandsaw does. My background is woodworking, so I feel your pain regarding trying to get clamps aligned right. 😅

Kit I am 100% sure that you know how blessed you are to be learning from a master. Julian's father is your instructor also. Julian learned from his father Julian improved on that foundation and the torch has been given to you. I can see how you absorb Julian's every word and you are not afraid to ask questions. You will be a Master Craftsman because you have these two instructors but also you will build on your own strengths.. Never stop learning.
less than 3 minutes in and I am enraptured with Julien's teaching method here. It is the perfect example of ask a quetion and just wait while the student talks their way through it. The prompt for additional information 'why would you do it in that order?' confirms he is not just interested in the how but the why, whoch is often far more important. he nods to encourage her, doesnt interrupt or take over. he just listens and waits and gi es the student the respect she deserves. Thank you Julian.

I love to watch Julian work his craft. It never ceases to amaze me at the vast amounts of knowledge he has amassed in not only art but woodworking, carpentry and the many other skills he brings to bear on these jobs. It also is daunting to see how little decisions by someone else sometimes hundreds of years earlier make his work all the harder and yet amazingly how with a proper plan, lots of skill and enough time and money all can be set to right. Bravo to you sir and your new apprentice.

You comfortably use the term 'our' as well, when referring to the studio which shows an embrace of anyone plying the craft, at any level. Status is a function of doing, not time served.
I'm convinced a very practical priest is the nailer, and likely was pretty satisfied with his effort.
Would it make sense to varnish the back of the panel as well as the front? This would allow the panel to absorb humidity evenly and reduce cupping of the boards. This is best practice when building solid wood table tops for this reason exactly.

Yes as a hobby woodworker I was going to ask the same question. It would tend to seal the wood and reduce the rate of moisture change. But possibly from a conservation viewpoint this is going too far from the original?
