What is magic and how do we wrap our heads around the disconnect between our logical and rational selves and that within us that gives us chills and makes our knees weak. How can the transformation of simple materials affect us in a way that defies the clear boundaries of what we have come to understand in our daily lives?

@@argusfleibeit1165 probably a fire... I mean, I d'ont see how a painting could be so significantly dirtied over the span of however long it's existed for. Usually, when paintings are this obscured its because of a very old oxydised varnish, here it's clearly only surface grime. Ergo, it really looks like it's been in a house where there was a fire, and what's so thick on the surface of the painting is soot.

My friends mom is looking to buy a new house, and the one she has been interested in since she literally moved to the neighborhood came up for sale... she went to look... and the people living there had been smokers. The entire place REEKED, the walls were dirty, they had those popcorn ceilings that are IMPOSSIBLE to clean... She waited, as the realtors said the homeowner's daughter (Homeowner passed away, I think) was arranging for the place to be professionally cleaned/desmoked, and then went back to check again... all they did was paint over it! You could still smell it through the whole house. Also the kitchen was some completely insane red color scheme that just made you go a bit crosseyed looking at it. They were also asking like 200k higher than any other house in the neighborhood. Needless to say, she didn't purchase it.

This woman looks like Romy Schneider, the lead actress of the 1955 movie trilogy Sissi. These movies are very well known in Germany and Austria. A quick Google search of the painter revealed that he did actually live in Germany for a while after these movies came out. So it possible that the woman in the painting is said actress. Not stating this as a fact, I was just curious. Thanks for coming to my TED-Talk and greetings from Germany.

The narration on this video, specifically the first 5 minutes or so, reminded me of a poem by Mary Oliver called the Ponds. It’s a longer one, so I won’t put all of it here, but I do want to share my favorite stanza, “Still what I want in my life is to be willing to be dazzled - to cast aside the weight of facts and maybe even to float a little above this difficult world”

This was beautiful. Your soft voice, the calming music and the way you cleaned the painting, by dividing it up and not just simply go from one side to another, and the way you left her eyes for last. Perfection. It was relaxing and my weird brain that loves organised cleaning just had an amazing experience. Thank you for calming my anxiety and depression for 18 minutes, it was wonderful.

I've definitely been that kid that blows through an entire wing of paintings in a museum in like 20 minutes, because, well, they're just paintings of people and they don't even look that special. Especially with certain styles of art that are less realistic. I probably would have walked past this painting without much of a second thought. The revealing of this painting that had been obscured for who-knows-how-long makes it more poignant for me. It's more obvious how brilliant and vibrant the colors are, and it's more salient how deliberate each brushstroke is and how they make look mismatched and haphazard, but come together to make this beautiful portrait. tldr; I think museums should start printing high-resolution photographs of damaged or discolored paintings before restoration and hang them alongside the newly restored original. Its an important part of the painting's history, and provides some helpful background and context for people like me who sometimes struggle to "get" art.

Imagine how much detail we're missing in so many paintings because of yellowed varnish? How much emotion is lost behind years of grime? And how can that philosophy be applied to ourselves? There is complex majesty behind every person, every broken heart, that's waiting to be released. We just need to find the right tools to do so.
