Time is a curious beast. Regardless of who we are and what we desire, time passes and takes no quarter. And while we know this and are acutely aware of the passing of time, as those grains of sand accumulate our ability to grasp them slips through our fingers like well, grains of sand. Sometimes the only marker of time passed by is change. For change is the evidence of time. And much like we don’t see ourselves going gray in the mirror daily, we are shocked to see an old friend who is now salt and pepper for it seems so sudden. We look around our homes and can’t see the curtains bleached from the sun, the carpet less fluffy than the day we rolled around on it after installation. Even the plants in our gardens appear suddenly taller and more full. For as fast as time passes, change can be glacially slow. But change is certain and though we may not see it as it happens, when we look back at photos of our garden, or move the couch to reveal an untrampled spot of carpet we may be shocked at the transformation and feel betrayed by our inability to recognize or remember this change. And for the most part those changes are now part of the story; nothing and no one is immune to change.

@@KatoCoyoteCombatWorkshopOnce he has the canvas out of its frame, he will usually clean it first (after making it stable) and this is what's going on in this video. This involves cleaning old layers of varnish that have discoloured due to years of dirt, grime, tobacco smoke etc. He tests a small area first with the cleaning solution to make sure he can just remove the old varnish without removing any paint. He makes his own cotton swabs on sticks and lightly works in small areas at a time until its completely clean (often using a cotton plantation worth of cotton swabs 😏). Once complete, he will then inspect for damage to the paint layer or canvas and make any physical repairs to the canvas. Once the canvas is repaired, he then touches up any missing areas of paint with reversable paint. Obviously, he uses different techniques for different types of medium (canvas, wood etc) but the general work flow is as I've laid out. Hope this helps.

For me, watching this video was like getting out of a depression: the colours and emotions of life returned to me bit by bit. Change and growing old is scary and overwhelming. But fear, like change, is natural part of life. Just don't let fear of change rule you. Seek help from others, and help others in turn. Change with the world. Grow, explore, and embrace life in it's beautiful and frightening glory. Remember: you can do this.

Happy belated birthday, friend! May the year ahead be full of grace in ways you can't foresee now. And try to remember that you don't own past or future, so if you just remain focused on bringing quality to whatever moment you're in, however things turn out, you'll be proud to sign your name to the life you've lived. Take things in little baby steps, and let a feeling of well-being and accomplishment accrue, even with just simple things of daily living. Change is the only constant, so it will come, but if you're focused on your now, it won't scare you ... You'll mainly notice it in hindsight, which is the point of Julian's soliloquy. Good luck! Happy day of entering this world! Peace be upon you always!

Memes aside -- I've never seen this painting before, but it made me feel so nostalgic that I choked up for the duration of the video. Both pre- and post-cleaning. The muted browns and oranges of the old varnish made me think of my grandparents' house, with rickety wooden stairs leading into the basement, and an old-fashioned barometre on the wall, and gently fusty florals in the bathroom. The understated vibrance of the cleaned painting made me immediately think of the crocuses that my mum had planted on the little scratch of dirt between our neighbour's house and ours, and how they'd be the first blip of colour when it was still frosty in the spring. I don't live there any more, and my grandparents are gone; the things I remember so strongly don't exist any more.

Love how the painting went from a dark brooding piece to a sunny contemplative one. The young woman went from carrying the burdens of the world to one enjoying a sunny contemplation. The transformation process with commentary on time was marvelous & the piano continued the mood right up to the end. Even though it showed the hard work done to bring back the true beauty of the painting, this is one of the most relaxing videos of Julian's I've seen. Also, the most philosophical. Looking forward to the next vid. Julian, you & your family stay safe. Blessings.

I really fell in love with the painting (and the sitter) as the original colours were revealed. I'm on a sea vacation with my boyfriend and friends and I woke up early and I'm lieing in bed next to my boyfriend and I'm watching this video and I'm tiaring up because I love your work so much. Every time you make me fall in love for I am now a student in specialty restoration in the National Academy of Arts in Bulgaria.

You are a man for all seasons, conservator, woodworker, engineer, videographer and... philosopher. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this video, your speech was inspiring! And the change in this painting was like a bolt to the heart. Unexpected but dazzling. Thank you so much for sharing this example of your talent with us.

Less than 2 minutes in and I've already learned more about Julian's personal life than ever. Rolling around on the new carpet, huh?

Amazing to hear the philosophy Julian has towards art. There are some that like the patina objects take over the years, but there are those that like to "travel back in time" and see the art for what it was meant to be. A overall beautiful video and one that inspired thoughtful insights and a calmness that welcomes. Thank you Julian.

I was wondering why he left brown lines until I realized those were tree trunks that weren't visible behind the brown varnish before.

Oh my goodness, the luminosity hidden in this painting was astonishing! Look at the forest, the girls face, the grass. A pastel almost trippy dream
