Most insurance companies (around here anyway) will not insure your shop or garage with a woodstove in it anymore. With the gas and oil fumes involved it is a big fire hazzard and I don't feel safe with any kind of wood burning appliances in there. I use a torpedo type heater (80,000 btu Dyna Glo) to initially heat it up to around 65 degrees first (takes about 15 - 20 minutes) and let my electric overhead heater maintain the heat after that. My shop is insulated well and so once it's heated it holds it very well. I like wood heat in my house, but not in the shop.

I hear ya, insurance is definitely a real thing. Im lucky, my shop is around 400 square feet and insulated, so even when it is -20 degrees celcius outside, the shop is warm enough to work after 45 mins of the stove running. The wood I have to use is already clean and split, so really no mess. For me, the very dry and warm heat is totally worth it :)
