That was WONDERFULLY informative video Kent! I’m very new to wood turning I’ve only been at it for maybe a month and I love you content. I especially like how you keep stressing that if you are less advanced, don’t worry and stop when you feel comfortable. You can always just sand it. But then you show the more advanced techniques. I am and have been a professional photographer for over 30 years. Most of my career was spent working for newspapers. Now I am a marketing photographer. I said all that to say I really appreciate the art of wood turning and the symmetry. Thanks again! I’m learning a great deal!

It’s my faithful Cole jaws or vacuum Chuck for me. Perhaps you could demonstrate for the learners how to create and use an expansion Chuck method. It’s my favoured route. I’m 62 years old and have been turning for over 40 years. I still love watching other turners like yourself on utube. You never stop learning eh. It’s just a little side note but in this video and others you have made, you have moved the tool post and rest while the lathe was running. Don’t take me wrong but if beginners watch you do it, they may do the same with potentially painful results. I love your videos, You explain the processes extremely well. All the very best all. Happy turning

Ricky, Thanks for writing. I appreciate your input. Yes, we are all learning all the time, or at least that's what we should strive for. ;) And I agree, the lathe should be stopped before moving the tool rest. I usually try to make sure that's the practice, but there are those occasional moments. Happy Turning!

Thanks! When I started turning, I only learned to make a mortise for the chuck, not a tenon. As a newbie, I sometimes run into problems because the mortise isn’t deep enough, thick enough or correctly angled. I’ve been curious about how to make a tenon, and this is a great instructor all video!

Re: removing the tenon. Yes Kent, I use the pretty much the same method as you do. Except I convert the shoulder into a smaller band (which becomes a new foot, or base). I then remove the center entirely. I also round and smooth that new base. Looks really clean and well finished. I also see that you use the same "unique method" I often use. That's when "yousneak up" on your cuts. Ahem! Best regards. Wayne

When I was in junior high school I had a great teacher in my woodworking class. We had wood lathes that I loved to work with. Our teacher was fantastic working with kids and would do anything to help us. I made lots of bowls and other great projects that he helped inspire. After a bunch of years, I've finally gotten a great used lathe and want to get back into the hobby. Thanks for your videos, almost all of the instruction I got many years ago has faded in my memory but hopefully, I'll be able to learn again. I look forward to continuing your video series.

Kent, I blew up a small bowl this afternoon by first not watching this vid on how to remove the tenon. Other turners use a Japanese type pull saw to saw the tenon off and some turn the tenon off like you do. This project had about 1 1/2 hours into it and I wanted to try the Cole chuck jaws as mounted to my Nova chuck. Things were going good until the bowl jumped out of the Cole jaws and shattered into about 10 pieces. After thinking about it, I discovered one of the jaws had loosened a bit plus I didn’t use the correct grippers. So thank you for this great vid and demonstrating proper techniques. I’m looking forward to trying this again real soon. BTW, I’m saving the pieces as a reminder...........

You have taken it to a much higher level, I am inspired to improve. I was about to make a donut chuck for bottom finishing. All I need now is to bump up some practice. The simple method is always the best. This is faster than gizmos, and much more enjoyable. Thank you for your excellent video.

I just made a friction drive block for a lived edge bowl , I used a scrap of 2x8 , some exterior carpet tape, and router mat , it worked fine , unto the nub of the tenon split when it got to a little over a half inch in diameter. So I cut the remainder off with a flush cut pull saw , and hand sanded the remainder

I use this technique, too. Sometimes I use a big wooden faceplate instead of a big tenon to press the bowl on. What I dont like ist turning the tenon that far. I stop at 5 mm , usea saw, cut the littel rest with a chisel, avoiding torn out grain and too much sanding. I enjoy your Videos! Kind regards fromm Germany Fabian

I usually use a recess or glue blocks, only occasionally a tenon. After seeing this, I like your idea of following the curve of the bowl, so I will give it a try. Thanks.

Turn A Wood Bowl I'm not a turning maker... yet. At our home in Vermont we have a few acres of woods on our property. While hiking, snowshoeing and bird dog training in them I come across a lot of interesting wood. I've always wanted to make something from it and this year I decided to purchase a lathe and make my dream come true. No lathe yet, but I'm doing the research to figure out what will be the best option for me. I'll be sure to share my progress with you. 🦋

Excellent instruction and camera work. Got a very good understanding of the process from this. I haven’t been trying to match the wall of the base to the bowl body but will now. I like the look. Also liked the tip of removing the last bit of the nub (technical term . . . ). That will reduce the stress I’ve been having with this step. Thanks very much.

I just got tooled up with an old fashioned home made wood lathe that is pulley driven. Unfortunately when I picked it up for free I soon found out that it's threaded 9/16-18 on both the tail and head stock. I purchased a 5/8" to 1" - 8tpi adapter and now have to make a coupler to bridge the space between 5/8 and 9/16 for the adapter to fit. Super excited get started first on some simple bread bowls. Thanks for sharing this wealth of knowledge it's been super helpful. If you know any company that provides a 9/16-18 to 1"-8 adapter that would be super helpful.

Thank you, Kent, I too watch many videos from the maestros and yours has just given me the closure I think I need. I say "think" because I only really got into turning bowls at the start of our lockdown here in South Africa. So no physical teachers so far. Thank you too for your brilliant guidelines on your website, they have been invaluable. This video is no exception as right now I have a bowl in the chuck needing tenon removal.
