I am a beginner and addicted to your videos. These are so helpful! Thank you.
I’ve only been turning for 3 months so although I have experienced all of the problems you stated ,the more times I watch your video the better the information sinks in.Because I do make at least 1 of these mistakes each time I turn a bowl on my midi lathe.

Christopher, we were all there. You're sticking with it and that how you will become good at turning. Keep it up and Happy Turning!
Lathe videos love to talk about angles. Tool angles. They NEVER ever specify which of the three angles they're talking about. There are three: 1). The relationship between the tool and the floor - the handle up or down. 2). The lateral application to the work - the handle left or right. 3). The amount of cut at the tool point - the handle twist open or closed. It is a frequent cause for confusion
Very useful. Thank you!

Oh how WONDERFUL. Kent provided a superb video here detailing some of the pitfalls to be avoided in bowl turning and from nowhere 6 have provided a "Thumbs down" for the vid. This obviously mean THEY are so much better than Kent at turning and are going to submit THEIR OWN video to us all...on how they believe it really should be done. I can't wait......I won't hold my breath though. Thanks for a very informative video AS ALWAYS.

It would be great if you could add this to your complete bowl turning course. It shows a number of things from that course really clearly, but adds value by putting them in context.
Excellent demonstration showing closeups of the bowl gouge and the correct angles for use. Catches can be frightening. This video is just what I needed.

Very good Kent. I learned a lot. ‘Supported grain and tool supported on bevel’ 👍 ‘Rotational speed the same, but surface speed of the wood gets less, as you cut toward the centre’ 👍 Maybe I won’t get a tool catch next bowl! I haven’t been laying the gouge over anywhere near enough. 👍😅👏👏👏

Kent, I am a novice turner in Sydney, Australia and having not turned a bowl since High School some 52 years ago I have viewed nearly all your videos and learning slowly. My major drama is forming a proper Mortise so that once turned around the wood stays in the chuck, I have had several fly off causing real dramas. After viewing your videos multiple times your instructions are really sinking in and making a huge difference in my work so a great thank you for your expertise.

Sounds good. Be careful with too much time between turning the outside and inside. If the wood is wet there will be a lot of stress that can appear as cracking on the end grain. Best to turn all in "one sitting." Happy Turning!

Hello. Great vid as usual. I just want to clarify the angle of the flute - when you say 90 degrees is that to the tool rest? And when you say 45 degrees that would angle the flute 45 degrees away from the 90 degrees towards your body? so zero degrees would be the flute pointing straight up relative to the rest? Cheers.

Watch many times already and just realized from your close-up, I've been trying to duplicate the visual I see on video (most of the time is not the same as I truly will see while I'm turning) (130 degree position you're turning in will look different from an overhead view). Thank you again!

On the first mistake, you missed something really important: that’s a great way to end up with a concussion. Between the inability to see how the gouge is attacking the bowl and the loss of leverage by being in a weird position, a catch is easy to have and could send the handle straight into your face.
@TurnAWoodBowl
3 жыл бұрын
LOL, that's funny. I think I was kinda exaggerating the extreme bent over approach. However many people do have a tendency to lean over and peer in from the end of the bowl. And you're right a gouge handle kick back to the face might not be so pleasant. ;) Happy Turning!

@@TurnAWoodBowl Question - when you are doing a deep (Think like a 4" dia mortar bowl 3-4" deep) bowl (rather straight sides and a very tight radius at bottom) how would one be able to see where their bowl gouge (and the tip/angle) is at without having to bend over and peer in? I know how I managed it, and it wasn't all that pretty, but the bowl turned out beautifully nevertheless (mine is 3-1/8" I.D., 2-1/2" deep, and flat bottom is about 2" dia.. 1/4" wall thickness) Took me HOURS of very light cuts in hard maple.. and still have one little (3/8") spot of a tiny bit of tear-out where I got a light catch on the last finishing cut :( Had to do that by the seat of my pants, rarely do I find a detailed how-to on cutting a small diameter "deep" bowl like that... wondered if you'd have any pointers.... Because of the small diameter and the depth, standing normally, you can't even see where your gouge is at by the time you're a third of the way into the side cut, and can't see the center without bending over..
Now that's a good video👍 Even has me thinking about your online course now!
