@@vizefusion4895 I agree completely. It would teach a much better lesson if they just got her proper debt counselling, got her on a fixed repayment scheme and taught her how to cook on a budget. The food she's cooking "cheaply" is unnutrious garbage when she could be eating much more healthily.. especially given she could stand to lose a few pounds herself. At 21 if she doesn't start learning adult responsibility soon, she's going to be homeless by the time she's 25.

Thanks for that update. People are so judgy, quick to criticism and making horrible remarks about her looks and weight. And you wonder what propels this behavior? Insecurities! And while she is responsible, I also think society has its foot in the door too. She was spending to look better, live better etc so as not to judged so harshly. And at 21, she was very brave to put her life out there like that, and want to make changes for the better. Look how people judged her. And honestly if you think your life is perfect, your probably living in a fairy-tale land also. Check yourself before you judge. Its easy when your behind the keyboard and no one is looking at you. Thought!

When my husband and I first moved in together 18 years ago, I found out very quickly that he was a brand snob- food, clothes, vehicles, everything had to be name brand. I was raised by my grandparents and we were always on a budget, so I learned early on how to bargain shop. Well out agreement was that I would buy the groceries for the home and pay the power bill while he paid rent and everything else (I didn’t make as much money as he did, and I was 19 years old). He started complaining about the store brand foods I was buying. I know not everything store brand tastes good, but for the most part there is no real difference. Well I decided to teach him a lesson after he complained about the bread I bought 2 weeks in a row. I bought the bread he wanted and let him eat that loaf. Then I kept the package and put a loaf of store brand bread into it (Walmart brand bread in a Sara Lee package) and let him eat it. I did this for 2 weeks in a row before I told him what he had been eating! When he realized he couldn’t actually tell there was much of a difference at all, he shut up about it and let me buy whatever groceries I wanted to buy 😂😂😂 I will admit I buy Sara Lee bread these days, but we aren’t as broke as we were back then either 😂

It’s a sad addiction. Like someone doing drugs, buying things make her feel better. She’s trying to overcome her insecurities which could be her looks, her weight, her unhappiness etc. She even admits it makes her feel good. Before I got married to my husband of 25 years he made me pay off my $5,000 credit card debt. It’s a horrible way to start a marriage. Hope she gets the help she needs.

When I was 21 I spent my money on a good psychologist, because I didn't deny the problems I got by my parents behaviour. That's what all spendaholics should do, cause an addiction only covers your psychological and emotional problems. Learning and healing and thinking healthily is far more important than stuff.

If selling the house would help with the debt it means there is some equity there. They could have worked with the bank to use the house as collateral to restructure her debt. To be able to do that, she would need to make more money, which should have been do-able as she only worked a few hours a week, she could have gotten more hours or a 2nd job - also way less time for shopping :-). By selling and then renting their own house, they will end up paying a lot more to live there, plus any capital gains on the house go to the rental company instead of them.

A strategy like that, all expenses to zero, doesn't work, people can manage that for a month, then they look ahead, realise they still have 5 years or something left, despair and go on a spending binge ruining their progress and more. It's the same with obese people trying one of those extreme diets where you literally eat almost nothing, they manage for a while, then relapse and end up fatter than ever. What these people, both obese and indebted people, need is a long term lifestyle change, and the only way for most people is to ease their way into it, going in too strong kills motivation quickly Also she isn't going to be earning 800£ for the rest of her life, if she increases her earnings to 2000£ but keeps the 800£ budget she will pay off the debt quickly
