People who abuse the Section 8 make it bad for those who are honest and need the service. Landlords hesitate to rent to families, bc of past experience

I feel bad for people who have section 8 and can’t find suitable housing. I felt so blessed when I was able to terminate my voucher after I became a RN but section 8 was a huge blessing because I was able to go to school and not worry about rent after leaving an abusive marriage. I pray others can use it to better themselves and their families the same way I did.

As a landlord myself, I am not understanding why other landlords are hesitant to accept the vouchers. My husband and I rent to housing authority/ section 8 clients only in one of our units. It’s guaranteed rent whereas someone without the assistance can call you and say “I don’t have your money this month”. The tenants have for the most part been really good people. This is heartbreaking 💔

Then you’re 1 of the billions that got lucky. The sales pitch is that you’re guaranteed the rent. The problem stems from the tenants that wreck the place, move others in, refuse to pay their measly part. Are on drugs And deliberately break things then sec8 does their inspection and if you don’t make the repairs in their time frame u don’t get paid. Then it’s repeated again.

Section 8/rent assistance/ low income housing is meant to be a stepping stone for most, but for those that are disabled it is a Safety net. Not all tenants that are in section 8 are bad tenants. But I think those same people, regardless of being on section 8 would have done the same thing even if there was zero assistance with their rent. Bad people are just that. This happens everywhere!! This NEVER should have happened, but... in 2015, I finally left a very abusive, toxic human. I took our two kids with me, OFC! It was OK because we got into a shelter. We weren't there a full 24 hours when my oldest, a Monkey King Child, fell from the shelter bunk and broke his jaw, three places, very bad. I was nursing my daughter, so I had to pop her off the ta and run to him. Anyhow, after the 10 day stay in the hospital, with a 2 yr old, who fully was ready to tear up life again after day 2.. and an 8 month old, nursing baby.. We had no where to go, we went back to the shelter and I was told they moved us out, we're a liability. Too tired to fight about it. We went to another shelter, thankfully it was quick entry, as it was technically an emergency, no car 2 little kids, only two arms and every "man" for himself.. Any way, They said they needed more room for actual emergency cases and I wasn't willing to say I was disabled or unable to work, so they asked us to move on. I could have easily lied and we'd been fine, but obviously that's not OK. So after moving around, literally here and there, anywhere, we found Family Promise and we were able to actually stay until we got stable, we had to be out the door at 7am and the company would move our stuff, every Sunday, to a new location and transport us yo the "day center" no beds, so no rest... Weeds out the one who are willing to come up...., at that time I had bought a beater with a heater, first investment!! I had to break some rules to get and keep a job, but I did.. I did bartending for two months, saved every penny! An older guy came to the shelter to serve the families meal, (mandatory attendance, even if you have a job) He was a scientist at the biggest company in the next town, He put in an excellent word for me and I got the job!! That means exiting the program. So I found a place, got help with first and last. I put in my 2 weeks, worked 10 days straight over the winter break, everyone was gone and work was my escape, I happily obliged.. My last day there was a Saturday, I moved into our home on Sunday and my new, very structured job Started that Monday morning. Thankfully I had the kids in daycare.. Sorry, I needed to let this out... It's 2022 and I never did get accepted for a voucher. We were homeless for a total of 10 months. The struggles I didn't talk about here are many!!!!! It was so crazy. We made it through, we're still paycheck to paycheck, but life is good and God is amazing! I also had a very horrible custody battle directly after my son broke his job. Mom: homeless, jobless, car less... dad: kept the house and the car and the resources. I fought with truth and won!! He left and still hasn't contacted. No support from him, but one time, ever. I am struggling to forgive fully.

To everyone complaining about the people on Section 8. You do know there is a way to properly vet tenants. Plus not all Vouchers are HCV Some are VASH Vouchers issued through the Housing Authority to disabled veterans and their families. You can also choose to rent to an elderly person as they may take better care of the property. Vet properly people. I use to work with tenants and landlords and I would tell them little secrets to determine what type of person or family would be a good tenant. Also get references from previous landlords. Trust me,if they didn't care for their property the ex landlord will tell. Please stop the blatant classism in the comments. You never know if you'll need help someday. My Dad never rented to anyone who had a filthy car full of trash - because he knew in 6 months that's how his property would look. Also, he required first months rent, last month's rent plus a deposit. That usually kept the scrubs away. He also had it written into the lease that for each additional person who "moves in after the fact" the rent went up $150. The tenants were actually glad to have that clause because when their freeloader friends & family asked to "stay awhile" they could tell them They couldn't allow that because their rent would go up.

Had she picked the father of her kids based on character rather than superficial things, she'd be in a home and not on TV complaining about what her man (read, the government) isn't doing for her. She needs a husband in the worst way, but her choices and attitude won't allow her to keep out that would rescue her. As a landlord, I can tell you that section 8 vouchers are usually avoided like the plague. Yes, it's totally unfair and no one should be judged by the amount of money they make. However the simple fact is landlords always end up regretting accepting Section 8 vouchers. Nine times out of 10 the voucher recipients destroy the house, don't pay on time, make way too much noise for the neighbors, the list goes on. It actually really hurts me to turn away someone with a Section 8 voucher because I know that they might be very good tenants and very good people. Unfortunately it's too much of a Gamble and simply isn't worth the risk. You can talk til you're blue in the face about having a heart, ethics and human decency but at the end of the day none of those things pay for my damaged property or loss of income.

You are absolutely right, the landlords can't be blamed for not wanting to deal with the BS. Where I live the people on our block are experiencing this with two of our block tenants, and it is GOD awful. On the weekend, here lately, the music from one tenants house is so loud, and it goes on until 3 AM, so if you are trying rest up from your work week, it is impossible. Then they get a little sleep, and start up again the next day, as they did this weekend past, for a few hours, then stop and sleep the rest of the day; thus by then you are so tired when you go to work on Monday, it takes an entire week to caught up with the sleep that you have lost. I don't know what is going on over there, but it was not like that before, maybe once in awhile, but not every weekend. I have said something, although I no longer work, but none of my neighbors say anything, but I have heard them voice disapproval on many occasions. I don't know why they are silent, it baffles me. I guess they like being sleep deprived. Ms. B. Churchill

People with Section 8 vouchers don't even know that whenever your name comes up on the list and it's your chance to receive your voucher, if you cannot find someone to accept your voucher, you have the right to have your voucher ported out to another jurisdiction within your state, so you can find housing. I first received my voucher in a small town where a very popular college is located and actually almost lost my voucher due to not being able to find housing within the designated time frame because almost every landlord only wanted to rent to college students. It is considered as discrimination to only want to rent a property to a certain class of people, therefore after I wrote the housing authority manager a letter requesting to have my voucher ported out to the specific county within my state that doesnt contain a college and is more suitable to my living circumstances ie; school location, child's daycare, etc, my request had been granted and I was given yet another 60 days to find housing. Don't give up people. Know your rights and stand firm on them. Good luck to all in need!!!

This is sad how a woman can be a business owner for over 22 years and not have a substantial savings to provide for herself & her children. Sadly this will be a harsh reality for a lot of single mothers that live above their means in order to put on for social media and others. Financial literacy is part of being an adult. It's a shame to drag kids through our poor planning & decision making. I hope she pulls herself out of this & is more fiscally responsible in the future.
