Woman's Incredible Backyard Homestead Produces TONS of Food for Her Family - URBAN GARDEN TOUR

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Asia started off with a single garden bed in her backyard, and over the last three years, she has transformed it into a thriving urban homestead that produces loads of fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, herbs, and more! She's also got backyard chickens and quail, a greenhouse, a 2-bin compost system, and rainwater collection.
You can follow and find out more about Asia's Yellow Door Urban Homestead here:
/ @yellowdoorurbanhomestead
/ msasiaspratley
Asia is growing an abundance of fresh food year-round for herself and her two kids, and she dries, freezes, and preserves a lot of her harvest as well. Some of what she's growing includes blueberries, peaches, asparagus, squash, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe, onions, watermelon, medicinal plants, herbs like basil, and so much more!
She grows in a mix of raised beds (built with free cinder blocks she snagged online), no dig beds (with compost and free cardboard), in the ground, in bags, and on trellises.
We hope you enjoyed seeing this backyard transformation from a grass lawn to a productive homestead and the abundance of food Asia is growing. Definitely check out her channel to follow along: / @yellowdoorurbanhomestead

I started watching her two years ago and stopped because I got so depressed about my living situation. I grew my own garden but I was going through a domestic violent relationship at the same time. This year I let it all go. I also had chickens either a beautiful coop but I gave it all up to create a better life for me and my son. Two days ago I found a house! So now I’m working towards my garden again. I’m so proud to see her flourishing! It motivates me to create my garden all by myself. And luckily with the house that I found I can do all of that and more. I’m so blessed, I cried for days like this and my heart is just filled with so much joy❤️

I love that you are showing people that you don't have to have double/triple digits acres on small acreage. I feel like " homesteading" is becoming the new, keeping up with the Jones's. It has newbies thinking they have to have tons of land and animals to homestead. We can grow where you're planted. Thank you for sharing.

I loved your garden Ms. Asia. It's healthy, healing, organic, peaceful, quiet and in harmony with Nature. I always plant and start my garden in summer. I started my seeds but covid hit me and my poor seeds died. I have no energy to plant. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden. In my place we have nosy neighbors that reported one of my neighbor who owns a chicken. He was fined $400 for growing a chicken in his backyard. I grew up in the Pacific islands. All we have is what we grow in the backyard. We don't have a grocery stores. Our market day is only once a week so we have to be self reliant. I grew up with several chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, cows, goats, carabaos, cats and 11 dogs. They are farm dogs. They always follow my dad to the farm. They hunt mice and some unwanted snakes, insects in my late father's farm. You gave me inspiration to grow my garden again next year. Thank you again for sharing your story.

I can relate. I grew up in my grandmother's flower garden so the lime-green thumb started. I got interested in "food" gardening about 5 years ago with plenty of failures and lots of money thrown away. I eventually found success with carrots and peppers. The summer of 2019 I taught myself canning. Luckily my mother gave me her mother's waterbath canner; I just needed to get the jars and accessories. Now I have plans to market garden all the things with improved skills, better knowledge and 10 acres. If you want it, go after it.

Asia WOW ! What a beautiful video. I grew up in a big city and transplanted myself to a smaller suburban city/town. I always wanted to grow my own food but was scared I would be a serial plant killer. I started volunteering at a community garden in 2021. By the end of 2022 I earned a small plot in the garden. This community garden charges zero dollars, all they ask for is volunteers. Now in 2023 I successfully grew seedlings for the first time and they didn't die. I have a plot of cantaloupe and squash. Last month I picked my first cantaloupe out of my plot. The taste was incredible! The melon was sweet and full of juice. A month ago I added green peppers in the plot. Next year I will try to grow kale, strawberries, tomatoes and mixed salad greens. I can say YES, to a healthier mind and body. The gardening work is hard yet healing. Eating fresh food from the garden tasted better than the store brought produce. I'm not digesting pesticides or chemicals. Keep growing !

For a three year journey, this woman is doing awesome! I love using grow bags, the mobility element is underappreciated. The only thing I would look into would be adding flowers for beneficial insects and maybe more rain water retention/conserving for hot summers.

TN also-my 2 neighbors spring planted & the heat stalled them out. I wasn’t up to it, so germinated late, but my plants are all far healthier. Theirs are leaf eaten, infested. The disease starts with the extreme weather.

She is speaking my language, I’m a new gardener have only 5 garden beds. Started last year with my kids for fun experiment. I find so much peace and joy seeing a tiny seed growing into food or caring for plants like my babies. I have small kids it’s harder to manage everything but I’m really excited about future. I’ve a lot of plans to grow my garden bigger and definitely get some chickens.

Asia, This is the first of your videos I watched. I think you're AWESOME!!! I've been gardening for 40 years. I grow a lot of the same ways that you do... We just moved last year to our new house, so my husband just built me above ground beds and a greenhouse that I've been wanting for over 10 years! It's better than I dreamed of and I'm just now starting to buy the plants that I've always wanted to grow in there. I live in Zone 6b, in PA, real close to the MD line. So I need the greenhouse to protect my new lemon tree, fig tree, olive tree and tea (Camelia Sinensis) plant. We drove down to NC to get the Tea plant from a Tea Nursery there! I am an Herbalist too. Last year I closed my little herbal business after 10 years, because it was too expensive for all of the rules and regulations to run a small business. But I sold a lot of herbal products in that time. I made medicinal teas, baths and culinery blends, and just sold my dried herbs. In my gardening I use Companion Gardening throughout. Next spring I want to start keeping a bee hive too. My only question for you is where is your garden? I was wondering if you're in the South... I'd love to hear from you! I'm going to watch more of your videos! Thank You for doing this! It's fun to see what other people are doing!

My sista, thank you so much for all you do. It is so refreshing to see someone with a thriving garden that used what they had on hand and started with one bed! Anyone watching this- please understand that you don’t need a bunch of money for flats, fertilizer and fancy things. The plants don’t care how much you spent. Just give them what they need! By the way, I share your preference for sheet mulching and no dog gardening. No dig= less watering, less weeding and less money spent.
