As a history graduate (bachelor and partly masters). Norths point on judging people on standards of the time. It's such an important aspect of history and helps you to appreciate the mindset of our ancestors without stigmatizing them. Well done north. It would be great if you did a history episode one day or podcast.

Yes! I don't have any degree in history but I was in the advanced class I my final years of grammar school (in Germany). It involved lots of analyzing written sources. All kinds of mainly primary written sources... Medieval popes speech, medieval monk writing about a siege during the crusade, letter of a ww1 soldier, Ceasars writing about the Germans, newspaper from 1940 great Britain, colonial times missionary writing about the treatment of indigenous people in Africa... With all these we had to first analyze the stylistic choices of the writer. Is the writer using metaphors, heavy use of verbs indicating that the writer is describing things from a subjective, opinionated point of view etc. Next step was analyzing the writers opinion and mindset in comparison to the moral standards of their time. Would his peers have seen him as a zealous warmonger? Was he way more progressive and open minded? Last step would have been looking at the writers worldview from our modern perspective. One thing was never the goal : branding someone as good or evil. Even though a pope preaching about the necessity of claiming Jerusalem for Christianity is utterly zealous aggression to us a medieval person wouldn't have seen military conquest as a morally wrong action... It's not easy to judge past deeds. While some things like the Holocaust are quite easily determined morally wrong by almost all ideals (even past ones), other actions aren't as clear. Marriage of people we today would deem way to young wasn't seen as wrongdoing in the 13th century all around Europe and Asia. That Mohammed did it doesn't make him evil as the "glorious, chivalrous knights" living at the same time likely had similarly young wives... But with everything that isn't easily discussed people, especially on the internet, will get impatient. They want a simple, quick answer that is easy to spread via social media. It's the same with politics. Simple, quick answers are likely not ideal, are oversimplifications and may even contain traces of populism and extremist agenda and that applies to all colors of extremist agendas...

Listening to Commodore's story is seriously eerie. The guy just described my whole life to date almost. I've been there. Part of me is still there, but damn am I starting to get there. I quit drinking, got therapy, got medication (because at times I was closer to self-deletion than Commodore sounds to have been, and while it's not for everyone it has worked wonders for me). I wanted to do the whole KZread thing, but I recently realised that right now at least it's not right for me to do it. I don't have my own voice yet. But I need a hobby, so I've saved what I can, I'm going into 3d printing and restarting painting, because that always made me feel at peace and genuinely happy. So Commodore, I'm right there with you, a lot more than youight expect. If I can get to a place where I'm starting to feel better, you can too. North is dead on the money with this one... Just not about football. All football sucks regardless of who is playing it!

As someone with a Bachelor's in history I feel somewhat qualified to talk about the issue of morality in history. My opinion is that the practice of history is separate from moral judgement. It's neither about judging people on modern standards or the standards of the time. Such a topic is not only rarely relevant to the topic at hand, but will often skew one's ability to do history successfully. Trying to fit historical figures and cultures into moral boxes is what causes so much of popular history to surround useless pissing matches like what happened with you and the wife over the "did Britain start the slave trade?" nonsense. The real subtext happening there was likely, as it usually is, more about attacking or defending a particular culture than it is about what actually happened. Doing history is half about asking good questions and half about investigating the answers, and it's extremely rare that questions of who was morally in the right and who was in the wrong lead to any productive avenues of inquiry. Leave the moralizing to your personal feelings on the matter and you will learn a lot more useful information when doing history.

I do wonder about the "floating" state. In the Wu Wei, effortless effort is a desirable state. Being free to pursue your life any way you want, even by non-pursuit, is a sometimes oppressive freedom. "I could do more, be happier, be more productive." But who sets these standards? Who sets the "minimum happiness"? For whom do I perform and create a legacy, when I can't experience it once I am gone? In Germany, for example, you only get a street named after you after your death. For a monk, an ascetic life in meditation might be perfection, although they might neither travel nor create any kind of legacy. So, a few thoughts on that matter, which (as per usual) come back to the question of "Why do I want to do things"? Personally, I am quite content with painting tiny plastic soldiers and meeting other people on 4'x6' battlefields. At least for now.

An interesting note to the womens football part. I think this interview was in an aussie tv show, but if you look at the other way, man earn less in football. They earn merely 2-3% of the revenue they generate, they dont get health insurence (this is for the USA) and their salary is contractually tied to how the perform in tournaments and placements. Now contrast this to womens who earn somewhere between 20-25% of the revenue, they get better coverage, and their salary is not tied to their performance in any way what so ever. Talk about priviliges!

They don’t get paid if they don’t play and they get paid less when they play less than their best. The womens team chose a contract that ALWAYS pays every player regardless if they even play a single game (100k per player). They chose this then blamed men for what they did to themselves. In other words typical “I am woman hear me roar and can you go check what that noise in the kitchen was while I stay here equal and powerful in the bedroom?”

There is a time and place for any political speakings. In the privacy of your own home. At least in the case of when it comes to our hobby (Mtg, warhammer, ttrpgs, etc.). From what I have found: politics in general, when not asked for ruins the hobby for everyone. Everyone (at my store at least), are very much mixed political beliefs, and any time politics start worming into convos that isn’t money related (the ever so common “man, taxes suck… LoL” type stuff), we all have this unspoken rule of “if politics start coming up, stop us.” Politics, extreme right, extreme left, they’re the thing thats ruining the hobby. It’s why I disagree with the idea to get rid of the far right (starts with a N, has a Z in there, and ends with a I!!) people is to make 40K more far Left (I recognize that 40K already is left, specifically older editions. ((I say personally that it’s more centered than ever, and it should be there.))), but all that would do is inject unnecessary politics from our modern era into a setting that is not really made for it? Not anymore at least. And that second story is a perfect example of WHY any political speak is just a cancer. Because as soon as someone says anything that doesn’t line up with someone else’s political standing, that’s it. Its over. We saw it with those girls going onto the net, and basically cancel culturing the store owner as soon as he said for them to chill.

I dont necessarily agree with all the History is a lie agreed upon thing. The job of Historians is to precisely ask its sources questions, like why is it written in such a manner, or why does it not mention something that happened at the same Time, so that you Can draw conclusions about the intents and purpose of the sources and whether or not it has any use for the subject your working on. However i have a lot of disdain towards the pseudo social media Historians, people that have never written a scientific paper in their life and gets a lot of their stuff wrong, albeit there are few exceptions that are competent folks, but those people are usually not as entertaining or do not say things people want to hear, therefore getting less views, and even getting their reputation slandered.

24:20 I worked on FIFA, from 17 till 19. Here's a fact that few people know: the women's teams had to be boosted by 25 percent to even come closer to the mid tier men teams, because playing in the WWC would've felt sluggish AF otherwise. Realistically, you can't have Rapinoe have the same stats as Trippier for example. 50:38 I disagree. Men strive to get better for one simple reason: better chances of a more suitable mating partner and automatically a better chance to pass on their genes. This is why at first we used to believe that competitivity is an essential male trait without really understanding why. If you were to remove procreation from the equation, men in general would lose their motivation for competition.

It's messed up how some use the hobby as a soapbox for their politics. All that kind of thing should be left at the door. Maybe then some people would realise it's ok to find common ground with somebody who you might not see eye to eye with on other matters. One thing i always enjoyed about when i was hobbying back in the day (1st and 2nd edition era) was that you'd go into a store and be meeting and getting along with people from completely different backgrounds. True diversity.

Having had a friend who worked with GW, and then went on to run his own hobby shop, the primary concern is that they’ll mess with your allocations, and hurt your ability to sell as a business. It’s not really about freebies or invites. Or at least that was the perception communicated to me.

As for not trying to change 90 year olds' minds, I respectfully disagree. Being old doesn't give you a pass on being ignorant. Maybe I've been spoiled because I had the pleasure of having open minded grandparents though lol. I hope to keep learning things into my 90s, and not be given a free pass out of pity! A lot of it is guilt I think--many genuinely wonderful elderly folks don't want to admit that X or Y was a horrible stain on our country's history because they feel defensive. They want to think that if truly atrocious things are happening, they'd have known about or tried to stop it. And the past is a different country. But outside of academia, if we want to be proud of our country's achievements, we should be ashamed of its mistakes. Why should I be proud of [a famous historical battle], yet when it comes to [a crime against humanity that ended uncomfortably recently] be told "well you can't judge them, it was a different time." (Tried to make it non-country specific, fill in your own country's moments of pride and shame as appropriate :P) And there's a limit, too. You said you can't judge Julius Caesar for killing a million Gauls because he didn't think they were human... but then you mentioned it was good we judged and executed Nazis (which I agree with, we should have killed more imo! Nazis, that is, not Gauls). But that isn't consistent, is it? Julius Caesar had a different world view than us, and didn't view his victims as humans... well I'd hope we don't share the same world view as Nazis, and the Nazis didn't think of their victims as humans either. As a history Grad, we should understand why people did things without agreeing with them. Julius Caesar committed genocide, and he obviously didn't view himself as a war criminal (ok, maybe the senate, but not in the same way we view a "war criminal"), but we can understand that and still acknowledge the horror of his actions. I wrote essays on how the Nazis rose to power, and learned about their world views and motivations. That understanding made me hate them more, even. I think people take the "we can't judge people using modern morals" thing too literally.

So, here in the USA, there is absolutely a pay gap between men and women, but the ladies in the story don't understand how it happens... In the US, A large number of companies pull a trick where they tell employees not to discuss their pay or salary period this this is how the pay gap happens; Because each employee negotiates their own salary. And in these negotiations, women most often get less than the men. What the women in the story do not understand is that this happens with corporations and big companies comma not small time locally owned businesses.

Yeah I was gonna say. North kind of missed the point here. It’s not that women are upset that as teachers they make less than lawyers. It’s that they make less than their male colleagues for the same role. Which does come back to your point about people not discussing their salaries.

Not to mention, the fact that majority-woman fields are played less isn't a coincidence. Companies used to be allowed to pay women less, and women were expected to get a husband to supplement their income. We expect teachers getting paid pennies to accept that because they're "doing it for the kids" or whatever. We want them to martyr themselves.

No they don't you muppet. The only pay gap is because on average men work more hours, take less vacations, work more highly skilled or dangerous jobs. If that was the case every company would exclusively hire women to save money on paying employees. What an actual dumb take.

As a devout nationalist I'd like to chip in. If I was the store owner, I'd make it forbidden for political meetings to be held. That's how I'd bar them entry. Let them cancel me, they would otherwise be "upsetting" my other customers with their controversial opinions. I'd tell them: you're bad for my business, sod off. I'm sure if I do so once and word spreads, all the based dudes and dudettes will come shop with me. Besides, if you don't earn enough like a man, how can you even afford to buy my hobby stuff 🤡 Now I know I'll get shit for this but I've seen all the patterns discussed in your video before but in video games. Women activists will infiltrate, be nice at first but then start demanding more inclusion and spreading their neo-marxist ideologies. These people are actually a tiny minority, but they're efficient at being very loud and vocal. Only fear of how they might ruin your reputation is giving them any actual powers. The first step to break them is to take a stand and stop caring if they call you racist, homophobic, mysoginist or whatever. Just tell them: "thanks for noticing". Don't try to change their minds or explain yourself. I know I treat people fair, and I have nothing to prove to anyone. And you're not responsible for the thoughts of others.

20:38 there are many reasons for a gender pay gap - for those interested I think Jordan Peterson has a compelling arguments eg men work outside, prepared to travel, work more dangerous jobs, work jobs where the pay is scalable etc and yes women hit their 30's and have choices to make: a family or career for example. This is not to say the career is better than a family. But if we are talking about gender pay gap, these are some of the reasons for it, not just the fact that someone has an XY chromosome. Only recently found your channel and have been enjoying the stories, thanks so much!

They want someone to challenge them because they don't get to preach to their like minded friends. The dance you have to learn is not to bite. To nod and smile and change the subject to normal stuff. I go out a lot with a younger friend and he has not learned this he takes the bait all the time. And it ruins his night he's stuck there debating a girl all night who wont let him leave but also isn't going to go home with him. I just leave him and pick him up at the end of the night now. I wish American law worked that way. If it did Jack the baker, and apparently the only cake baker in all of Colorado wouldn’t have had to spend several fortunes defending himself in state and federal court over the years for “discrimination”. Over the apparent crime of having activist march into his shop knowingly targeting him, and demanding that he no just sell them a cake, which he happily would. But, specifically make a cake and use his talents and business to promote and celebrate a behavior that his religious convictions directly for it him from promoting or celebrating. He even keeps a list of other reputable bakers who he trusts and are willing to perform the service. When those alternatives are offered, the only response is a law suit. American rights are no longer protected. We have devolved into a class system where you are afforded greater or lesser access to legal protection based upon belief system. The best I’ve ever heard it presented is: The US is not a nation of laws and never has been, it’s a nation of political will and always will be. This shop owner is not safe from legal reprisal if he posts a sign or asks these disruptive people to leave, he is opening himself up to weaponized activism.
