UConn has been known amongst the W coaches and GM to have their players Pro ready. They have coined the phrase "Quintessential UConn player" which translates to high Xs and Os IQ, sound fundamentals, moving w/o the ball, and transition offense. Which is why their learning curve is not steep in the W, and they develop within their teams' system quicker,Like Dorka and Coach Reeves she credits her short learning curve to her UConn training. They are developed to be smart BB players. Every player that ever went through that system will tell you it is very difficult. Nika herself said, "I was uncoachable, I would'nt listen." Then she changed mainly because she had to be the floor general with Paige out. Coach Quinn said she's not even acting a Rookie she's calling plays and being very vocal and asking a lot of questions. Seems ready to me. I think she'll surprise a lot of people.

:UConn is very serious about all players being vocal and loud on the floor. They stress communication. Geno and CD drill that into them right from the first day they step onto the practice floor.

Forgot to mention, they also place a high value on proper body language. There's a video of Stewie getting chewed out by CD for poor body language. It wasn't a soft rebuke either.

After watching your vid on Nika, which was a good take, I thought there is the UCONN connection with a front office member Sue Bird. Then I saw the graduation for Nika, which I thought pretty much told the story. According to Quita loves sports, Williams will be the next domino to fall, taking Seattle to eleven. I honestly, after watching Nika play four years, feel that she is going to shock the W with her play. Really nice take; you bees a natchul.

This is a great situation for Nika and Seattle. Nika will do just fine facilitating the offense, and she’ll be a force on defense. And best of all, she’ll really develop her offensive game-hopefully. I’m hoping that Noelle will really push Nika to be more assertive offensively. Nika could be really effective offensively. She has a vastly improved 3 point shot, and she’s always been great taking the ball to the basket. Just check out her Croatian national team highlights.

I'm glad you were wrong about Nika-- you were right actually, the math wasn't there-- but not surprised or disappointed. Mostly I'm glad Seattle found a way. Nika deserves a shot, and she will rise to the occasion-- wouldn't surprise me a bit-- or she will not. Nika... it's hard to figure. She's not the best player, or the most athletic, or the most tall or however you judge. What she has is an indomitable will and a deep-seated need to win basketball games. It's also helpful she's totally fearless; just born without the gene, apparently. And the passes! A love child between Sue Bird and Jen Rizzotti couldn't make some of them. All hope is never lost when Nika is on your team. You don't surpass Sue Bird's records in most assists in a game, season and career with nothing else; and you don't hold the three top shooters in all the NCAAW to the poorest shooting night of their career in the finals with nothing in the tank. Whatever it is that wins basketball games-- I don't know either-- Nika has it in abundance. It is fitting she's "taking over" for Sue, the Legend. That will help her, Seattle and even polish Sue's rep, not that she needs it. It will help everybody except the opposing teams in the league, and the fans most of all. Sorry to you for Melbourne. I know you were high on her. I know nothing about her, haven't seen a game. But she was traded, rather than being cut, so at least two teams think she's a valuable addition. We'll see how she gets on.

I think if you had watched more UConn games this season you would have seen her improvement on both defense and scoring from previous season and also her turnovers went down and she became better at protecting the ball while making assist after assist each game. I'm personally not surprised she made the roster. During the UConn season she was definitely the third side to the triangle of Bueckers and Edwards that made that injury filled season successful.

Seattle and Phoenix are both better this year on paper, but I think they have big potential downsides. Seattle should make playoffs atleast, but I agree phoenix might not make it. Washington or LA may finish with the worst record this year. They'll both probably be pretty bad at scoring. Chicago won't be great but will probably win more games than people assume. As a Atl fan I hope their point guard play is better, but it seems they still want haley jones to play backup point.. Which doesn't sound good to me. Dallas and Minnesota should be pretty similar to last year. Ny seems weaker to me this year, but I'm a johanes fan. I don't see anyone on their bench that'll light teams up now. Injuries can change everything though. The fever have a ton of games packed into early weeks, as the league tries to cash in on clark playing. So if they have a slow start, I wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't be shocked if clark struggles early as the league's marquee player. I'm not sure how that'd effect viewership, they obviously are going to push and ride her as far as she can take them. It will be a interesting to see how Indy handles that pressure. Maybe even have her sit out a back2back game.. Not that anyone wants that, but I wouldn't be shocked.

I have to agree w/your Fever assessment. And though I'm rooting for the Fever, they will definitely have a slow start. They start the season playing 7 games in 12 days & the first 4 are against NY & Connecticut & the last of those 12 is against the Aces. I think once the players get used to the pace & passing of CC as PG, they'll play great, but that takes time. If I try to put a positive spin on it, maybe having such a tough early schedule will push the transition faster & result in more wins later on.

Especially the all important mid range shot that seems to separate the good from elite. Azzi is exceptional from deep. But if that shot is not falling, she doesn't really have a fall back move or shot.

I think Diana Taurasi is circling the drain. And she needs to be careful about damaging her legacy. She should totally embrace Caitlin Clark’s entry to the league. Diana is the goat, no doubt, but the league is gaining a gazillion fans who are new to the sport and who won’t understand her significance to the sport. Those works will only see her as a petulant fading star who is jealous of Clark’s attention and star power. And if I ran USA basketball, Diana would not be on the Olympic team and Clark would. If USA basketball does not include Clark on the roster-regardless if she is below the level of the other options-Englebert and the folks running the Olympic program need to be fired immediately. This is next great opportunity to grow the WNBA and Caitlin wearing the Stars and Stripes will definitely do that.

I am really happy for Nika, but sorry Jade had to be the one to go to clear space (although they would have had too many guards.) It would have been fun to watch them together. But glad she went to a team that can use her, not just unceremoniously cut. Liberty will miss Dolson and Johannes which may drop them out of 1st class. If Phx can stay healthy they can move up,, particularly with Cloud and Allen, but they are an aging club and injuries could really devastate them. Cardoso out for potentially the season will doom the Sky, if they weren't already. Wings will miss Sabally, but even so, I like their club and their young players and I expect them to surprise. Having said all that, once you get past the Aces, there appears to be a lot of parity among most of the teams and I expect there will be a lot of 22-18 to 18-22 teams this year. Meaning the final playoff spot(s) will provide season long interest. Add Clark to the mix and we're in for an exciting season and a major uptick in viewers.

I wrote you a comment on your "Nika will be cut" video, explaining that you were wrong. My reasoning, which you like most of the WNBA "Old Guard" didn't factor in, is that now the new young, charismatic, beautiful, talented, media savvy ladies (like CC, Angle, Cam Brink, Nika, Kate Martin, etc, etc) are the main draw for new eyeballs. They drive ticket sales, interest, media talks and jersey sales, etc. They tend to play an exciting form of ball and are money magnets for their franchise. What businessman/woman would cut a skillful young lady who is a money making machine? Please start factoring in this to your "equation" of who is going to be on a rooster. Caitlin has shown what a ticket sales Queen she is but the other young stars (including Sabrina and Kelsey Plum, etc) are what will be even more important to making money than just winning championships.

I agree. At the Draft this year, we saw a concerted effort from the commissioner's office to present beautiful ladies being drafted. The shift is to the individual athlete and their fan base. This mirrors almost exactly the shift to the NBA in the 1980's when league popularity exploded.

In the pros, with everyone taller, bigger, and faster, you have to ask yourself, what skill-set does she bring to the table? The best thing about her game that I saw in college (really never saw her last year) is she doesn't turn the ball over. In college she was able to post up against shorter teams. She can't do that in the "W." And with such a low percentage shot...like I said before, nothing she does scares me.

I think the main thing you missed with the Nika situation is that the wnba is not yet at that stage where decisions can be strictly made from a basketball perspective. This league still has major image issues and desperately needs players that appeal to the masses. They want women that present themselves in a feminine way, players that parents would want their daughters to emulate. This is why people like CC, Cameron Brink and Nika are so important. The commissioner sees this . I want my own daughters to see feminine looking players. So one way or the other, Nika's staying in the league. I'm sure the wnbl does not have this issue. History has already shown that the W will not grow if the majority of players look and act like men.

It's a stretch to say that all 3 players that you mentioned "look feminine"... because one of them does not. Her popularity is based on her record breaking and unique shooting ability...not on looks. Not every player is pretty, feminine, nor do they all look and act like men. Each bring their own individual skill and aesthetic to the game...this is historically true across most women's sports.

I’m curious about what people think about this controversial topic: pregnancy. My strong view is that players should not be having babies while they are under contract with teams. I know that it is, of course, illegal to contractually preclude women from having kids in the workplace. My point is that it is selfish and unprofessional to do so when in the WNBA, particularly when star players do so. When Napheesa had her baby, she torpedoed the entire season for the Lynx. I’m sure her teammates were not thrilled, despite what they may have said publicly. It’s a really thorny issue. My view is if the players want to grow the league and be taken seriously as pros, they simply cannot take off years for pregnancy. Can you imagine, Jokic, taking off a year in Denver? Or Steph Curry? Or SGA? etc. Not to mention teams making moves to build around star players like Napheesa. It really damages the teams. I’m curious about other people’s takes on this. Am I totally off base? I’m a trial lawyer. I can’t imagine working up a case for two years and then advising my client that they’ll have to use another lawyer for the trial because I decided to take off a bunch of months right before trial. That next lawyer is not going to be as prepared or have the years of institutional experience as me.
