WKY Radio April, 2, 1962 Air Check

WKY Radio April, 2, 1962 Air Check
Hear all the WKY Radio DJ's intro music, play commercials of that day, and newscast with Jack Ogle, Ross Porter and more. It is like dragging from the Split-T & Cherries Burgateria to the Carousel, then to the Charcoal Oven, Hollie's and Rancher's Daughter on a Saturday in the fall!

I love the recording beep during phone calls. Remember this well in those days! Beeps every 30 seconds to let the caller know they're being recorded.

I got to know Danny Williams in Edmond Oklahoma. I played golf with him at Oak Tree several times. (now called Oak Tree National). He was a great guy and hilarious to be around. I watched him on WKY as 3D Danny when I was a kid and I couldn’t believe I was playing golf with 3D Danny!

i'd like to make another comment if I can. That record at 43:13 is TELL ME MAMA by singer Christine Quaite. Now that record came out in 1964.That segment must have been spliced in with another bit from 1962. Unless the P.D. at the time was Rod Serling. Enjoy looking at the pictures. So far I remember more than half of them. Larry N. Boyington aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA

That short segment in which Lee Allen Smith locked the door to the music room and the DJ's had nothing but Frank Sinatra records to play, that wasn't the only time they did that. It happened one morning early on the Danny Williams show. Thanks for the memories as Bob Hope would have said. The audio must have been crud over the phone because that DJ was not hearing her at all.

Thanks, Jon! I just realized that one of these guys may have been Wakefield Holly (Holley?) in his younger days. I discovered the long form interviews with Danny Williams and Russell Pierson in the past few weeks and really enjoyed them. I appreciate all the KZread projects you have done to document the past. That's me at 2:07 in a promotional shot of my 22 year old self in this video. Wish I knew how to download the picture. Thanks! Bill Miller WKY 1972-74

One final comment if I may. At the point at 43 minutes and the song TELL ME MAMA, the rest of the video is from the year 1964. I know that all songs played (partially) is from the year 1964 Larry N. Boyington, aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA

5:57 Cripes, I thought that was Walter von Huene, background character actor on Happy Days. I’ve always called him Big Ears. Obviously not him since this guy has regular ears and was born way before Walter.

Yes, Claudio...the "W" call letter was grandfathered from the old, pre-1925 radio rules, which set the W-K calls division at the 100th meridian (100 Degrees longitude-roughly the NM-TX border). In 1925, the Federal Radio Commission (FCC's predecessor) was organized and the W-K division line was moved to the Mississippi River. Stations already assigned call letters between the two boundaries were allowed to keep their calls (e.g. WOAI, WBAP, WFAA, WKY, WRR, etc.).There were also eastern stations (KDKA, KYW) that pre-dated the 1925 rule that set 100 Degrees longitude as the first line...they were allowed to keep their call letters, too.

Yep...a classic set of calls. With transmitters on both sides of the Mississippi, St. Louis stations have several examples of W-K waiver.

Actually, the boundary was moved in 1923. The Federal Radio Commission was formed in 1927.

Probably had something to do with the order or spacing in between their commercials for Camels and Winston. I would imagine they had paid for the prime spots. May have also had to do with "No mention of Lucky Strike or Marlboro on the air."
