This "horrible story" is actually extremely common. Myself and most of my friends all share this story.

On the show Red Dwarf there is a laugh track, and for some reason on a later season it was removed, at least on the copy I saw and it made it really weird, although i think thats just cause they still left the pauses after jokes as if the laugh track was supposed to be there and it was just silent
