Dan, before you do Anything with a trailer hitch for that WJ, look up the gas tank recall for the 93-04 Grand Cherokee's. The "solution" was to put on a trailer hitch. If I were you, I would call up you're local dealer, talk to their service department, and ask if there's any open recalls or voluntary recalls on it. The gas tank recall was voluntary and almost a decade ago so they may not be able to do anything for you, but if they can you might get a free hitch out of it.

@@ProjectDanH NP, I remember hearing about it from the guy I bought my ZJ from and I want to say I heard about it again either from an online forum or a KZread channel. I was reminded about it when I sat in a WJ at a local u pull. I wonder if anyone else car shops at the u pull before hitting craigslist and marketplace. Anyway, I saw it had the hitch and no tow plug and said, They had the recall done. So when I go to buy a WJ, it will be one with the hitch on it.

After a long time search, my wife was set on finding a WJ 2000 to 2004 grand cherokee, OMG always got sold when we started to go look at it. Nothing around here in Mi. To many miles on them. But with a dealer working with her she finds one in Pa. A 4.0 just what she want's with all The options. I know I have maybe do some work on it. Best part is it only had 84000 miles on it. Now its perfect I see your working on one, first thing I did to replace all hood, tailgate and glass struts, or lifts. Just ordered gas tank shield. Thanks Dan H

Make sure you have a good compressor to keep the pressure in the cylinder when your removing the valve spring retainers. I used the fel pro valve seal kit and was very happy with it.

Nice that somebody already put the better coolant bleed cap on the rad hose. This is also a trick used to be able to bleed it when the plug in the engine strips out, and they do. Don't know how familiar you are with 4.7's but they are very picky about coolant temp and must be bled properly.

Just replace the ac clutch. should come right out. Also, grab a cheap trailer reciever and install it. Then take it to jeep/dodge and they'll give you a brand new one for free to add structural rigidity in the event of a rear end collision.

If it is smoking only on start up and then acceleration (especially after coast) then it is certainly the valve stem seals. My 2004 Overland WJ with 130k miles was blowing lots of smoke white/gray/blue. It was also burning lots fuel too. So I swapped out all 4 O2 sensors, and that took care of about 80% of it. I then soaked the pistons/cylinders in seafoam for a couple days (they were gunked up) and ran sea foam in the oil to loosen the rings. Much better, but still blowing a cloud of blue smoke on startup and hard acceleration. I then installed new valve stem seals (using rope technique with heads on). The old stem seals were toast, hard black rubber. After that no smoke at all. P.S. hard to tell, but looks like your AC clutch is non-existent.

lol, you hit the nail on the head. My AC seized up and sent chunks of the clutch all over the place. I'd love to pick your brain on the "rope technique" i need to do that soon.

@@ProjectDanH It was not easy nor pretty, but it was cheap. By the end of it I kind of wish I had just taken the heads off, or at least the cam, but didn't want to suffer from jeep creep (of scope). With the cams off you can use a screw down tool (like Martin), as opposed to the pry tool I used. Also, inside of my valve covers was a complete mess, I am talking mad varnish (dark red). Maybe not necessary, but I spent hours scrubbing the crud off. Here are 3 thing I took away: 1) Get the right tool before the start. I thought I did, but quickly found the Lisle tool I had would not work with cam on and wouldn't fit under cowling. The pry tool worked ok, but I did worry a lot about scratching the lobes. I had the air intake manifold off already, so that didn't effect my leverage. But I did have to get creative for cylinders 7 & 8. 2) Pushing rope is no laughing matter! It is tough to push enough rope down the coil ports and then into the tiny spark plug holes even with a stick, and you always need more than you think. If you don't have enough rope in there the valve still wont drop in, but it will slouch, keeping you from compressing the spring far enough to add/remove keepers. 3) For the love of gawd, phone a friend. It was easy enough to get the keepers off with one hand while using the pry tool+2' breaker bar in the other, but putting them back on was a whole other story. I wish I had jeep friends near by :'( Let me know if you need more deets or pics. Best of luck.

I'm going to make a WJ driver seat video, but all the seats are really easy. The rear seat bottoms come off with 8 10mm bolts, then the rear seat tops come off with 6 15mm bolts (I recommend an impact gun for those). Then the front seats have 4 13mm bolts each and you have to unplug the power motors.
