WITHIN, WITHOUT

Фильм және анимация

In a barren and cold world, a lone knight travels toward a sole beacon of hope; a beautiful, golden city. When the knight’s way is blocked by an infallible monster, the knight must fight to reach his goal; but can they defeat the monster from within the heavy armour without facing the memories that haunt?

This is a wonderfull animation it's shows that eventhough the world is full of harm you shouldn't build a stone wall around all your thoughts and feelings in which you trap yourself. It's tough but you'll get through it eventually.

This animation *isn't about depression,* it's specifically about social anxiety and not letting what other people say control you. The monster isn't her depression, it's the hurtful words of other people. Edit for context: when I posted this five years ago a lot of the comments were EXTREMELY negative, calling this animation a gross misrepresentation of depression. Some going so far as to say the animation was potentially harmful and that the artists should be ashamed/held accountable. Scrolling for a bit it looks like all the comments this was directed at are gone, buried or deleted now, so people are taking offense to my comment as me being pretentious or policing people’s artistic interpretations. That wasn’t my intention, I was just trying to defend the artists at the time.

Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.” or "grow a thicker skin" so in my mind armor=resilience so i could only see the message as something i could never agree.

The scene where the main character is surrounded by two people spewing out black liquid and her running away from them is symbolic of social anxiety: she gets anxious of conversing with others, fearing others' judgement. The armor that grows on her and weighs her down represents the burden of isolating herself as an attempt to protect herself and hide herself from the fear of confronting her anxiety and others. At first, she wears the armor and tries to plow straight through the black goo, a manifestation of her fears and obstacles without actually confronting them herself. This tires her out, and she learns to figuratively and literally come out of her shell and come to accept the anxiety within her with the positive mindset of moving forward. The final scene, where she enters the building, symbolizes her finally bringing herself to go to some sort of social gathering, after overcoming her social anxiety. This is such a beautiful animation.

I struggled with depression for several years, and this video perfectly captures the feelings of fighting an ongoing and ever-increasingly difficult battle of coping with the darkness. This movie is a beautiful and hopeful sentiment to everyone struggling out there to know that giving up shouldn't be an answer, and that no matter how hard it gets there is a beauty behind the darkness. I especially love how the monster seems to die out after the heroine accepts it and slowly walks through it. This is also how I defeated my darkness; by accepting it and learning to ignore it. Very well done and beautifully animated.

Fuck ... sometimes it feels like standing on the edge of a very tall building and that sneaky feeling of jumping from it lingers to you all the time. I just hope im strong enough to not jump. Love the concept visually, and the designs of the main character as well as the goo monster is striking. My only issue is that the sound design lacks impact. I didn’t really feel it when those huge impacts were happening. Besides that, though, all around incredible work!

I could be wrong, but I got the impression that the muted sound design was intentionally done to have a numbing effect. I gathered that the short was a metaphor for depression and anxiety. If so, then I'd say that it fits.

AJG I totally agree. The concept, design, characters, style and movement are beautiful, and the only thing missing (beside the sound that you've already mentioned), is the frame rate. It's a super painful thing to do, but if there was one more frame between each two existing frames, and the movment would be smooth (combined with your comment about the sound), it would be on a whole other level. I liked it a lot. Very well done, made and thought out!

Hey! One of the Sound Designers here! Thx for criticism! This was out first animated film, so we still have a lot to learn! But - not feeling those impact could be because of the stereo mix! We worked in 5.1 and used the sub a lot for the impacts + we could have worked more on the stereo mix as well (it sounds way cooler in 5.1). But I'm glad that you payed attention to the sound - and I hope you don't find it all bad! :)

William Skov Very much so liked many parts of this short, Animation, Sound, Writing, etc. A possible solution to avoid this minor hiccup with future projects, could be to post in the description (or comments when the video is first uploaded) what equipment the film was created in: 5.1 stereo, color calibration on the monitors used by the animators and artists, etc, as a recommendation for the ideal viewing experience of this short. Really just to give people that pay close attention to sound and visuals a guide to further improving the sound and look of this movie. Just a suggestion.

I think this can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the person and their personal experiences. I interpreted it in three ways: the battle with social anxiety, depression, or sexual assault and the armor represents the wall you build in order to protect yourself from past experiences and you stop trusting others,, but it ends up destroying you and making you utterly alone in the long run. I thought it was solely about being raped at first because of the two men circling her, but then when she went through the dark mass it sounded like a crowd of people so I thought it might be social anxiety yet it could be post traumatic stress or something, and then I realized that could also be interpreted as depression. Either way, I relate to all three, this was truly an amazing video and maybe one of the first meaningful animations I was actually truly able to understand and relate to, it made me tear up a bit.

In this world there are those who want to tear us down just for existing. They try to make us feel worthless, undeserving, less than. They pull us down until we no longer feel comfortable in our own skin, so we conceal ourself in an attempt to guard against those who try and convince us that we are unloved. We may have fought back against these voices. We tore and we pounded and we raged against those that meant us harm. We battled for what must have been an eternity, but inevitably our strength ran out and we collapsed yet despite all our valiant efforts, they remained. We may have reflected on our actions and saw how we let these voices change us and wondered why we let them control us like this. These faceless, amorphous entities who only live to see us suffer. We can instead choose to be ourselves in spite of them. We can choose to love ourselves and accept who we are regardless of what we've been told. We may pay dearly for this choice though. The same forces will surround us and multiply until the weight is unbearable and we feel like we are suffocating, but if we can make it through then they will be powerless against us forevermore. Our prize is the freedom and possibility that lies beyond. Beautiful work guys. You really managed to tell a story that allows people to connect to a lot of diverse experiences without become too abstract to keep it's emotional impact as a film. I'm relating this to just being a kid on the internet trying to express themselves. I thought the goo animations were particularly well done. I could really feel the viscosity of it. The way it would coalesce into globules reminded me of the pollution villain in Fern Gully which was some of the best looking animation in that entire film.

The balck goo came out of their mouths could it be bad negative words ? The things people say sometimes are horrible and ugly sometimes and no matter what you do or say " fighting it" it won't stop it and the best way to get rid of it is ignore it and walk through it like it's nothing. Don't give the bully or the bad talk any chance to hurt you and don't fight with it ignore it and let them see how small they are to you and how you don't give a shit of their words or opinion because they are nothing but sorryasses who don't have shit to hurt you ... Be strong everyone.

the black goo actually seemed like this girl was having paranoia about people talking bad about her when in reality, all she needed to do was walk past her paranoia and just continue without the paranoia/delusions of people talking bad about her. could have just been social anxiety instead of being bullied.

after a second thought, walking away and ignoring won't always help against a bully or people bad mouthing you, so I think social anxiety fits this animation better. Gossip can get really nasty, regardless of the target fighting or ignoring it and people that hate you can hate you more if you ignore them - it only fuelling their flame to make your life more miserable. As an example; Ignoring racism doesn't make it go away either.

  • @shuddabinswollode

My interpretation is the monster representing social anxiety. Her armour is temporary coping mechanisms: excuses to leave conversations or checking your phone. She uses the armour to deflect and slashes through the anxiety and moves onwards. The anxiety gets worse so her armour must grow stronger. At 2:49 , I feel as if the sludge that consumes her symbolises a panic attack. I thought it might have been just being overwhelmed by socialising but the way she can’t breathe properly once it envelopes her changed my mind. Not to mention the way she reacts out of fear (“oh no, not again”) when she notices it taking over her body is incredibly similar to when I notice my hands shaking- something I've noticed that happens when I’m about to have an attack. I absolutely loved this. Been bingeing animations for days but this one really spoke to me. Really beautiful

This is so beautifully done, I'm feeling emotional. I had seen Ferngully multiple times when it was new, but eventually it had taken me over a decade to remember its name and existence. Rediscovering it, I realized that it had ended up influencing a majority of my art and animation preference. I'm so happy how the amorphous aesthetic was done here, it's more than just visually impressive. It conveys both internal and external opposition well.

Everyones in here saying stuff like: "Its not about depression, its about social anxiety. " Or " No, this is clearly about dark thoughts, not emotional baggage!" And im here just like "Yeah, its actually representing all of those things at once, and countless others. Its a credit to the creators than many people can watch this, and be told a different story that means something to them. We all experience stories from our own perspective, everything means something a little different to each set of eyes."

Very, VERY good inspiration that I think could have many interpretations! Personally, I feel like it told a story of her recovering from sexual assault. The flashback with the attention from the men that originally, she revelled in. Then the black goo pouring from their mouths, symbolising it no longer being flattering, but bad, scary. They circled her. Then she ran, and as she ran, found herself being swallowed by that darkness. I think in the end, it told the story of how, when she put up too many walls and didn't confront the issue, she couldn't recover from it - but after wading through it, finally confronting the effects of what had happened, she was able to open that door and step back into society. Still wary, but more confident, and less scared.

People really need to stop saying “The message isn’t about” In these kind of videos it’s about interpretation when you say it’s not about something your making other people think they shouldn’t think about it and just let other people do the thinking for them

I loved it. The lack of sound makes it really drowning, I felt uncomfortable watching it, but I say that in a good way. Since it complements the feeling of drowning in ones fears and insecurities which we need to fight and then comes the relaxing music in the end giving back air.

It's very similar to how people's words can hurt you. Then you get depressed because of it. You "crouch" in the armor, feeling that you are protected. But in reality he only "limited himself" And after she "took off" the armor, she went through the shadow and came to her conclusions, analyzed the mistakes, gained experience ... and continued to live on Well, as I understood personally

Its so interesting that for being closed the viewer thinks that the knight and the woman are different, but in fact they were the same. As the knight was just she hinding herself from her own pain and errors. That is what the video meant to me.

This feels like my life. You people been examining my life? Especially the demon cloud part,...(I'm kidding. Life isn't that different from one another.) Yes,...for a warrior,...it seems there's always something weighing you down. It gets harder the more that's added when you fight through your own darkness and demons. Demons entertain like angels only to delight and suspend you in one place to steal time away from you and blind you to the truth. Thus happens in everyone's lives but in different ways. This animation is DIRECTLY what my life is. You won''t know they are demons until you wake up or they reveal themselves. Nice animation. The explanation is for those of you who do not understand spiritual things or the cryptic.
