Witch is Better EP116 - Traditional vs Eclectic Witchcraft - Different Paths, Equal Respect

In this video, we dive deep into the fascinating world of witchcraft, exploring two distinct paths: Traditional and Eclectic Witchcraft. As a Traditional Gardnerian Witch myself, I share insights into the structure, rituals, and lineage of this path, tracing its roots back to Gerald Gardner. However, we also journey into the realm of Eclectic Witchcraft, a path characterized by individualism, flexibility, and a tapestry of diverse influences.
Remember, no path in witchcraft is superior to another. Whether you're a Traditional Witch, an Eclectic Witch, or somewhere in between, we are all united in our quest for spiritual understanding and growth. Let's celebrate this unity and diversity, learning from each other as we navigate our unique spiritual journeys.

"Different" means "not the same" -- and nowhere in those three words does one find "better/worse," "superior/inferior," "smart/dumb," "right/wrong," or any other value judgment. THANK YOU so much for doing such a great job of reminding your viewers of this. :-)

Excellent topic and video! My way onto an eclectic path was by accident whew! I come from a very african spiritual family that leaned into christianity and judiasm. So, during a horrible moment, I had covid and only 1 week to locate a new place while also taking care of a veteran, and thought Yemaya or Yahweh, or someone from either pantheon would answer the call for help. I then passed out with a raging fever and instead had a beautiful woman named Cerridwen yelling her name at me in a dream and got a little irritated with me because I kept asking "how do you pronounce that" because I had never heard of the name. I woke up, looked at my phone and boom, a new place was blinking on my phone and a few days later we had keys and moved in. After that, I dove into who she was and read so many books, and now, have moved into an eclectic path, which has taught me so much. In addition, it really helps to open your eyes up to new paths, opinions, which leads to extremely valuable insight and learning! I absolutely love it! ❤ (& Cerridwen too!)

Solitary Eclectic here… growing up catholic and the females in my family were basically practicing Catholic Folk Magick. I do not follow any religions now, but do venerate nature and my ancestors. I researched several specific practices ..I found there wasn’t one path that solely let me express myself to the fullest..nor did I want to be told I had to worship anyone or anything. Not to say I would never feel the calling to work with a deity, but I’ve researched several and none have felt right for me. ..thank you again for the great video.

Maybe don't worship a deity at all!!! That's what I do. I worship the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine. No names, no titles... just spirit of masculine and feminine, which you can call creation itself.

Thank you so much for this video! As someone who has left being involved in leadership in a christian church, the path of witchcraft has been a bit scary after learning for 55 years of my life how demonic they think it is. These past 5 years have been so enjoyable learning how to work with nature and my own intuition. And all the studying is wonderful!! I wish I had discovered years ago that I am a witch, but living right in the middle of the Bible Belt, there’s not many places for that discussion lol. For right now I have chosen the solitary eclectic path because belonging to a coven and being guided in a traditional way does not sit well with me having just left that kind of instruction. It’s so good to hear that what fits me best is what I should be doing. Thank you for the encouragement! I have been watching your videos for a couple years and you have helped me immensely

I really enjoy and benefit from your videos. I always come away feeling uplifted! About 30 years ago, I joined a women's pagan group at my Unitarian church. While I loved the singing, chanting and rituals which included the Celtic sabbats, I moved to another state and began my own, eclectic solitary practice. It's been rather hit or miss regarding my practice as I tend to be a lazy witch.! But I'm an avid reader and enjoy learning. I had joined an eclectic online group which is about as much human interaction as I care for these days. As a crone, my life path looks quite different than it did 30 years ago. I'm quite conscious of my changing attitudes, perceptions and energy focus these days and learning from you and a few others on KZread has really improved my direction and confidence. And sometimes I'll sing the songs I learned at church to myself!

I feel like whatever the path, we are still in a personal journey and there are things we don't share (rituals etc). I feel like some things aren't meant to be shared. I'm Eclectic Wiccian, my mom raised me in church but the one thing i didn't feel was whole in self.

I myself was initiated into GARDENAIN WITCHCRAFT some twenty years ago and became a 3rd degree high priest in South Florida. I have since for health reasons no longer am a practitioner of the scared Science of Magicke of Wicca. I still observe the Eight Sabbaths. And remember Beltane most especially because it was on that special Day I was initiated. I really enjoyed my Coven and has since moved to North Florida. I am also a Knight Templar, and a 32nd degree Freemason. So, I do a lot of studying of the Occult Sciences and seek enlightenment in all the esoteric sciences. I do enjoy your Channel and will be a follower of your teachings. Blessed Be.

I started out as a solitary Thelemite / Ceremonial Magician. Though those influences are still present in my practice, I have since been initiated into my coven (I get my 2nd Degree on Samhain), The Temple of Hecate, Inc based in NYC. We’re a branch-off of Gardnerian Wicca (my High Priestess is a magical daughter of the “Witch Queen of New York, Lady Rhea”), and while we still adhere to many of the traditional Gardnerian tenets and practices at our core, we have developed a few nuances that differentiate us from those roots.

I’m an eclectic. I like adopting different stuff into my practice. In my mind, everything is connected, so why mot have a little of everything depending on what I’m doing? I just see as complimentary to the main practice I’m doing at the time. No one has all the answers, so a little of everything works in my mind. If you’re traditional and it works for you, I see no issues with it. I’ve had a long spiritual journey since my late teens, in my 30’s now. Been around witchcraft since I was a kid, my grandmother practiced southern voodoo, one of my moms friends was a Dominican witch who would do rituals from her culture in my moms kitchen. They often sought out mediums, fortune tellers, had my aunt read their tea leaves. So “magick” in general has always been a part of my life. I just took what I learned over the years and applied it when I started practicing after doing a lot of research and educating myself in many areas and seeing how and where they all connect. It depends on my mood, what I want to accomplish, time of year, my setting/surroundings, etc. i simply do what feel right/good at the time. Maybe one day I’ll use crystals, maybe the next day, I simply meditate, the day after I may do something in the woods/swamps barefoot where I live to be closer to nature and get my grounding session it. Maybe one day it’s nature based, and another it’s closer to darker occult related stuff, but there’s no ill intent. Just calling on different energies the feel appropriate. I dont see it as good or bad unless thats where your intentions lie. I can so a dark ritual for good purposes if I feel it’s More beneficial.

For me the only differences between Eclectic Witchcraft and Wicca ist The Oath and the big community, with which you are connected to by initiation. I've been eclectic for years before I met a HPs who initiated me into BTW, and sometimes I still celebrate with "free flying" sisters and brothers from my old eclectic coven and it works very well. Different, therefore equal. I am eclectic, partly because I'm a lone wolf, partly because, while I did attend Shabbats at a grove, I ran into a lot of "I know more Gaelic than you" sort of stuff. I'd like guidance, you know? Someone who knows more about it than I do. Until I left CA, I followed the Red path, but found out, when I returned to Ohio, not a whole lot of Native people there, so Paganism was the next best thing. It's different in a lot of ways, but still an Earth spirituality. Still equal.

Good video but he paints a picture of a stark contrast between traditional and ecclectic witchcraft. While British Traditional Witchcraft follows a well defined structure and practice there are many variations of "ecclectic" practice, not all of which could be described in the free form fashion he does. Many ecclectic practices are firmly rooted in BTW roots having a linaged and initiatory structure. Often the differences between a traditional and ecclectic tradition are very minor. Wicca is not a pick either dinner A or dinner B... but an ala carte menu.

@@WitchNTheWorking That is not actually what I said, ecclectic traditions are not BTW groups and should not claim to be. What I did say was there are traditions whos practice closely models BTW and function in just as structured of a manner as does Gardnarian. I can think of three longstanding expamples offhand. The one I can mention in a public forum is the Ecclasian Tradition. It has been around since 1990 and has been a member of Covenant of the Goddess for the majority of that time, so a recognized tradition. Ecclasia was founded and structured on the Gardnarian model, with some DCWA and 1734 thrown in as well. There are a lot of practices within that tradition that closely model Gardnarian craft, and a lot that don't. The point is that the postitive aspects of BTW practice that you describe in your video is very similar within Ecclasia. The choice in traditions is not black and white, but one of a lot of grey area between the ends of the spectum. I enjoy your videos and agree with the majority of your content, but in this case I think you painted the ecclectic path with a very broad bush and left out some important context. Keep up the good work.

It doesn't matter which group you're in. You are where you belong, where you feel the connection. For myself, I can say that I am an eclectic witch with an emphasis on the "green/hedge" witch. 🌿🪴🌱 I work as a solitary witch, but occasionally I get together with two witch friends. There is no wicca here, it simply doesn't exist - at least I haven't found anything. I am like a kind of (our national) witch who was involved in herbalism. I've always known that I'm different, I've felt it and I still feel it (I started on this path when I was 10 years old). Maybe I'm the reincarnation of some witch? The more I research, the more I uncover the veils of mystery, the more I get to know myself. I research Slavic mythology, gods, Proto-Slavic religion, Native Faith known as Rodnovery or neopaganism, customs, habits and everything related to it. Just because I'm curious about it. I don't worship deity at all. The force and power of nature is enough for me. ☀⚡🌬 A few days ago I was reading a book about witches, alchemists and fortune tellers (I was looking for some information) and realized that Gerald Gardner and I were born on the same day. Great! Who would have thought?! Mannun, I am grateful to you for every video in which you share your knowledge with us. Thank you! 😉👍 P.S. The fact that they block you on Facebook is just a sign that you are above them, above their level, that you are stronger and wiser... that's why they fear you and you are a thorn in their side. I'm speaking from my own experience - not fb related - but in general. It's usually along the lines of "If it's not my way, it's the highway". It would be boring if everyone was the same... 💤😴
