Once Upon a Studio (the short film that first aired on Disney+ and ABC and then later shown in theaters with this film) did a much better commemorative celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary in just 9 minutes than what this movie did in 95 minutes. It was simple and sweet, that’s all they should’ve done and saved the budget for this film on better material/projects.

Disney has just completely forgotten about the saying *”quality over quantity.”* Did you know that the writers at Disney were once given 6 whole months to write out a story? Why have film companies just completely forgotten about that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make film, all that matters is that the film turns out good! If a movie is good, it’s likely that people are gonna watch it! Many people today don’t care as much anymore about deadlines, THEY JUST WANNA SEE A GOOD MOVIE!! Plus it gets people all the more hyped up when the movie does eventually come out! The only way Disney can save themselves now is if they just stop, take a step back, and reevaluate everything and start fresh. Because what they’ve been doing is getting exhausting to watch.

The combination of Disney’s classic traditional animation and their modern CG animation just doesn’t look good and looks VERY half baked. I guess they wanted to do what Spider-Verse 1&2 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish did with their animations but it doesn’t have the charm and artistic appeal as what those movies had. Plus, the budgets for those films were lower than what this movie had and having big budgets doesn’t always mean it’ll look better than films that cost less or even have little to no budget for that matter.

The ultimate symbol of this movie is when the Villian toward says "mirror mirror on the wall who is the most handsome of all". Which is a Sherk reference not a Snow White. Because The line in Snow White is "Magic Mirror on the wall." Mirror Mirror comes from Sherk making fun of Disney, it is a whole Mandela effect Sherk was popular in the 2000s and Snow white was not .But the main reason I bring it up is this Displays the lack of care put into this movie. Ashia and her Friends are underdeveloped, and The villains ping pong between Complex and sympathetic and one-note and cruel, The songs are paced terribly in the movie and they do not really work as Musical numbers they are fine songs but they are really weak at telling the story. Lastly the art style looks wrong in motion.

Asha is a wish that escapes and is granted by a shooting star. As the movie goes, Asha realizes she’s a wish and will disappear once she sets things right. She does and poof, goes away, but returns as “ inspiration” a force that pushes every person to grant their own wishes. She ascends to we’re the shooting star came from and is a Queen with a castle and a beautiful gown.

Thank you! You really hit the nail on the head of exactly what I was thinking the main issue was, but haven't seen much discussion about. This film has no identity. The core issue isn't too much "adorkable" girls, bad music or bad animation, it's that Asha has no real unique trait to herself. Even bad music or animation can at least generate interest if there's a clear identity and goal behind it, but this film had...nothing. No elevator pitch, no real identity to grab you. Edit: Heck, the story is so confused, everybody got the complete wrong idea about what the plot was going to be from the trailer - even a full darn trailer couldn't summarize what the story of the movie was. That's...REALLY sad.

The songs in this movie are a mess. They show all of Julia Michaels' worst tendencies, namely, over-complicating simple rhythms, and jamming too many lyrics in one line. The main song is the worst offender. It's nearly impossible to sing along with. It makes the end of the movie seem bonkers when everyone is singing this weird, clunky song in unison. The fact that these songs were greenlit is the biggest problem. Why did Disney hire Michaels and Rice for this? They need musical writers. Why did they not reach out to Pasek and Paul, or Anaïs Mitchell?

I think one of the big causes for Disney's current woes, aside from the insane budgets, comes down to complacency. They were on beating everyone one of their competitors pants off in all departments a few years ago, and it went to their head. They just assumed they could keep doing the same thing a people would just continue to throw money at them. We see the same thing happen a lot in the video game industry, where one console will dominate a console cycle, so they think that they can just do whatever they want and people will have to swallow it cuz they are #1. Like what are you gonna do, not buy their new product? And then when it turns out the answer is yes, they end up scrambling to try salvage something. Happed to Nintendo in the Wii U gen, And Sony w/ PS3, and Microsoft w/ the XBOne. And I think something similar is happening to Disney right now.

The idea that everyone has a "greatest wish" and no other worries is the kind of bogus Disney schmaltz that might work for young kids but not (unlike many of their classic films) for adults. Add in the complications and you have a story centred on a rulebook of abstractions that has no relationship to the audience's reality.

While I agree _in general_ with the idea of the best movies having the simplest pitches, I will throw a few objections to that: "A greedy egotistical prince is magically turned into a llama by his evil advisor and carted off to a rural peasant village. Through his journey back to the castle to restore his literal humanity ends up finding his figurative humanity." "A young maiden is harassed by her stepmother and stepsisters. Against their wishes, she attends a ball where she meets the prince and falls in love, but is forced to leave early due to the limitations of her fairy godmother's magic. The prince uses the glass slipper that she dropped while running away to find her among all the maidens in the land." "A circus elephant has a birth defect that causes his ears to be abnormally large. Nobody except a cunning mouse believes in him until he is miraculously able to fly by using those large ears as wings." I can summarize Wish in about the same length: "A king has the magic power to collect and grant wishes, and believes he alone should choose whose wishes gets granted and whose wishes should be locked away. Our heroine believes wishes should be free to be pursued."

Disney are all about diversity and representation today. Why haven't they done an adaption of an African tale for their 100th anniversary? The continent has such a rich tradition of folklore of so many cultures. I would assume that there are good stories to adapt for animation.

I dutifully took my son to watch Paw Patrol earlier so my husband took him to see Wish. What I find hilarious is that it's likely that Paw Patrol will make more money domestically than Wish!

I personally really liked it. But I also had the driving enthusiasm of my 5yro daughter who hasn't stop gushing about it for the last week and a half (as well as making us play the soundtrack every day on Alexa). I found the movie cute, simple, streamlined, with just enough to keep me entertained. It didn't change my life, but I definitely liked it. The music was mostly great. What I Know Now and Welcome to Rosas are both BANGERS for me, and the This Wish marquee song seems to stick REALLY well. I'm a Star was just OK; felt very broadway-ey. I wasn't a big fan, but my daughter LOVED it. This is the Thanks I Get was also just OK. Sounds over-processed, and would have rather had a more foreboding theme (though, I like the juxtaposition of this upbeat cheery villain song and the darker What I Know Now). At All Cost was beautiful to listen to, but not something I'd actively seek out to listen to otherwise. Story seemed fine. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing overtly moving, but competent enough to understand Asha's motivations, have a few age-appropriate twists and turns, and follow a classic Disney Villain trope. Without getting into spoilers, I did like how they dealt with the idea of wishes and the freedom vs safety argument, as well as the empathy driving Asha plans to undermine the King. Would I care about this movie if I didn't have kids? Honestly, probably not. But having seen it, and been able to experience through the eyes of a child, I look for things which can bring me joy, rather than look for things that upset or frustrate me. And a lot of this movie brought joy. If you have a little girl, she's probably going to love this movie. And her joy will help you see the things she loves as something you end up loving too.

Your daughter talking about the movie and playing the songs on loop is one of the reasons why I think kids will really like this. This is an original movie that they can make a classic. If I had a kid from 4-6 I would want to take them to this movie because it's movie for them and not a sequel to a franchise that started before they were even born.

Not that I am on everyone's notification list, but I did not know about this movie until a few days before its release. Why so many Disney failures? Hypothesis: unrealistic profit margins (due to huge film budgets) and forgetting that its primary product is creativity. Someone chose this film's title, "Wish". Corporate irony or a desire? Maybe Disney's next film should be called, "Wake Up" or perhaps "Read The Room". I hope Disney course corrects more than raising their streaming, park and merch prices to make up for their deficit...that is MY wish.

Outside of doing a documentary focused on 100 years of Disney, even if it is meta, how can put out anything beyond serviceable under a mandate from management? Make a prototypical Disney film will produce something bland and prototypical, combined with too high expectations due to the anniversary.
