In this video, I wire up my trailer winch the easy way. I did not want to run heavy gauge wires all the way back to the trailer. I also show you how I mounted a trailer tongue tool box to my trailer.

2'40" - you cut tongue bar? It's no good...
I really love watching you towing your daughter around. That procedure is necessary it doesn't mean you cannot make it fun at the same time. Your trailer really turned out nice good job.
Let me get this right, you have a 12k winch on a trailer rated for 2k, and you used gear clamps to hold the side post terminals to the top post battery. You could have saved a few hundred and got a 3k atv winch, had a lot more room in the box, and spent $10 on top to side post adaptors, be way cheaper ,and have a way nicer setup.

Good idea but I believe I would have used a large piece of steel to mount the winch to the trailer frame
Great install I will be buying that same winch an box install for my trailer. I do lawn service and this would make unloading tree brush a lot easier and way cheaper than buying a dump trailer. Great videos keep up the good work. Liked an sub.

I don't think so, my true talent is woodworking. I have built a lot of furniture from rough lumber. But I'm getting off subject, I'm happy you really enjoyed the video and the quality of work. Thanks
Nice job Bob. Will just trickle charge the battery over the winter. Cheers Pete.
Really good idea on how you did that. May do that with mine.

RedLineBandits Please don’t do this to your trailer
This is a gag video right? It looks like one of the stooges went off on his own to make a solo career... I hope no one actually takes this seriously and tries to mount a winch like this
those are so handy, I have one on my trailer and it is really works great, I have loaded lots of dead mowers with it

Did you shorten the cable to make it easier to wind up? I know it will be helpful I could have used this setup in the past. Is your shed about done now? Are you working in there?
@MissouriOldTimer

no, I left the cable as it was but it might not have been real long, it's at least twice the length of the trailer.. not in my shed yet still not finished
I'm using a 7 watt panel on diesel pickup that sits way more than it's driven. That's enough to keep the two batteries up and the radio presets in place. I guess for your application the math would be based on how much power you are drawing from the battery and available recharge time. Don't for get that modern 7-pin trailer cables include an AUX circuit that you can use to top off the winch battery on the way. If you go that way use an isolation relay to avoid the winch "borrowing" power from the truck through a 30 amp fuse. Please keep your excellent videos coming.

Thanks that is very insightful information. I was unaware the trailer connection has the AUX circuit available. Bob

Thanks Larry, I appreciate that. See you next time.
First of all great job! But just a few suggestions. I have kind of the same set up . It's better to use a dry cell battery for a stand alone for this. And yes overkill on the wench but it will work fine but you need to spool the cable. Once you do this the cable should wind by itself on the wench . Not doing this it will take its toll on your cable. Park your trailer so it can't move (hooked to your truck P brake on) You want a slight hill. Then pull the cable all the way out. Put a swivel on the end to let the cable twist then hook it up to a tractor or whatever in neutral. then get behind the wench 3'-5'. As your pulling it in guide the cable with good gloves side to side on wench SLOWLY ! Keep tension on it the whole way . If it screws up simply reverse it a couple winds and start again. I hope this helps you . I'm not very good at explaining.
Look under your hood for a pair of 10 gauge red and blue wires. They may be disconnected and wiretied Brad your firewall. Wiring convention is the blue is your brake controller and red is the aux circuit. Also confirm your white ground wire is large enough to carry your planned charging current. Google is full of trailer connector pin outs and installation guidelines for your particular truck. I highly recommended a thermal circuit breaker and a rated isolation relay to make your installation trouble free.
I just saw your video and I was wondering did you have to put a cover over the hole you cut in the toolbox to keep water ie rain out? That was a great job on it by the way. I'm going to install one on my trailer, but until I can get a box I'm going to make it removable so it won't set out in the weather. I'm glad I found you again. I hope your son is well!!!
Did anyone else notice him welding galvanized ?
I wouldnt trust that setup to be there after a short road trip much less pulling any load.
Awesome idea. Time to subscribe
Nice job!

Overall nice install. What's the current rating on your hose clamp battery connections? If you park your trailer outside a small solar panel would be a great charger.
@doublewide6
7 жыл бұрын
I like the solar panel idea, I am outside with the trailer. The hose clamps just hold the wire terminal tight to the battery stub. The current should take the path of least resistance so travel down the copper terminal and to the wire rather than the stainless steel hose clamp. Am I correct to assume this? Thanks Also do you know what size solar panel would work?
For others, I would think you'd need cable that extends maybe 15-20 ft max beyond the back of the trailer. As each layer of cable is wound onto the winch, the capacity of the winch decreases considerably. Four layers of cable drops the capacitry down about 65%. But for your application, that wouldn't be an issue as you're not loading a 8,000 lb truck ontro the trailer.
On you box i put rubber on opening where the wire come out
must have been nice growing up and NoT being bothered by Physics

I'd like to see his first significant line pull just to see the winch rip out the back of the box and split the battery open.
how do you get yours to open without the key in it? the only way mine lets me take my key out is if i lock the box first
Dam nice fab job....a bit over kill on winch..... Better to over kill than under kill lol
Nice setup! I am inspired to do something similar! A question. If your winch is rated for 12,000# then how is the winch attached to the trailer? Can winch attachment withstand 12,000# pull? I didn't see how they were attached in the video? Thanks for the video.

My setup could hold 3000lbs. nowhere near the full winch rating. I won't pull anything more than a ton on that trailer. In fact, that is all it is rated for. The video shows how I welded a strong bar across and used plywood as well as bolts to hold down the winch. Take a close look at the video.

Where is the battery ground wire connected to on the winch, the bottom?
If you have room, weld some 90 degree tabs just above the winch and battery and drop in a removable plywood shelf (false bottom) a d use that space up to the lid for more storage.
Very slick, Bob! Some of that Harbor Freight stuff is pretty good if you're careful and know what to look for when it comes to "the good stuff."

I like a lot of HF tools 85% of the time I'm happy with my purchases. This toolbox is all that and a piece of cake for the $100 price tag.
Where in the video did you wire the winch to the trailer
please please use this as a way to NOT do this type of project. Your "roller unit" aka fairlead is mounted to wood and has become the pivot point for the load being pulled because the winch is lower than the load. That wood will break at some point. You cut the trailer steel and didn't weld it back up you welded that little hunk of crap to it but looks like you left the slot you cut. Please don't put such terrible info out there. If someone tries to scale this up to a car trailer people can very well get hurt.
You coudlve just drove the lawn mower on the trailer and saved alot of time and money!

Cool wench hey you think that trailer is still on sale today ?
All the hate when he said he was only doing 1k pulls with it. Jeeze
Lmao are you serious... are those hose clamps holding battery cables on battery
Dang I thought this video was going to be about wiring the winch
Should have cut a winch mounting plate to fit inside the box and bolted into the frame
That winch is way too big for that trailer, if you ever pulled anything with weight maxing that winch out you would probably RIP it off the frame. And you should really get battery terminals and a deep cycle battery.
Probably have to hook up a trickle charger to that battery to keep it ready???
@doublewide6

Yes in the off season. I just got a comment to use a solar trickle charger, I think that would work great.
@johnsmith-sw7ii

Not just in the off season....since there is nothing recharging it at all. Solar sounds great if its sufficient.
U need to roll cable uniform or u will ruin cable gets all twisted up
Whybdidnt you just wild the box to the tongue of the trailer?
7:30 how not use a saw
Did he seriously just say it was cheaper to buy another grinder rather than changing the discs out.
Did he do whst I thought. He cut what it appears the tounge on the trailer which will cause it to bend under weight that's completely stupid
You said 1200 lbs looks more like 12000 lbs
why a 12000 lb winch on a trailer than can only hold 2000 lbs? Thats a 5 x 8 utility trailer not a car hauler ROFL...
Why did you notch the trailer tongue instead of notching the angle, I know you said it was to perhaps keep it from slipping but you were welding it, just my thought, you lost a lot of integrity to the trailer..
