The video is for the "trailer plug" Only. This video explains the index location of each trailer plug function & the "standard wire colors" for TRAILER WIRING. The video is NOT attempting to point out vehicle plug wiring as each manufacturer uses different colors but the function of each location should be standard.

When I bought my first trailer, some 40 years ago, the dealer took my truck in and rewired the truck and trailer together. We had a major trailer theft ring in the area with trailers disappearing to Mexico - sometimes with the horses still in the trailer. The rewire from the trailer dealer ship switched things around a bit so that if the trailer was hitched to a standard wired truck the running lights would flash when the brakes were applied. This ultimately broke the ring and saved hundreds of horses and trailers. I have rewired all my trailers ever since. I now own a trailer that I lend to friends, and so need to rewire it. Your explanation of location rather than colour solved my confusion over which wire needs to go where. Thank you so very much! Going out now to make it all work.

Great tutorial on wiring a trailer plug! I like the fact that you've identified each pin by its function. I know there's 2 schools on grounding lights. One is as you mentioned, running a single ground wire to all fixtures. The other is grounding each fixture individually. I prefer the latter method due to the fact if you loose that single ground point all your lights will go out. You're correct to point out that you should never rely on the hitch/ball for a reliable ground! Anyway, excellent presentation and great job explaining the function of all the pins.

Manufacter directions starting at the white wire and going clockwise is white/red/green/black/brown/blue and yellow in the center. Much to my surprise, nothing worked right. I re-wired it using your instructions and VOILA! Perfect. Thank you, sir! How would I ever have done this without you??? Do you know how many youtube videos show the same mistake? Almost all of them. Thanks Dustin, you did a great job of explaining trailer wiring in layman's terms. I did notice one thing about the way you described the signal going thru the brake circuit. What you said only applies to a non-proportional controller and just as a side note I have found that newer integrated brake controlers don't send any voltage at all if there is not a complete circuit present. So if you check the plug on the back of your truck for signal you may not get one at all which would lead you to think there was a blown fuse when there is actually nothing wrong.

Thanks for your comment. I'm not familiar with that type of controller. Maybe you helped someone who will read it down the road. ❤️

A very good video. For the novice , always be sure to mention that you have removed the protective cover from the new 7 blade connector when attaching the wires, and that we are watching the wiring instructions while looking at the screw terminals inside the trailer connector itself. It is confusing as your drawing could easily be mistaken for the outside of the connector when connecting the wires. Im one of those who was confused myself and had to seek other diagrams to verify what you were explaining...Also mention that even though there is a standard color code, that many manufacturers often dont use standard code, and often will also use any wire color available to extend wires underneath the trailer to reach the trailer connector. Ive just bought my second used factory built trailer where the builder didnt follow the color codes . Thanks and great video....

One thing to add is that color code is for non-rv trailers. The RV industry, and the majority of aftermarket trailer wiring products, uses a different color code. The only three wires that are the same are the ground (white), electric brakes (blue), and 12V charging (black, not red) Having two different color codes is extremely confusing if one does not realize there are two codes. Another thing that is super confusing is forgetting which way one is looking at either the vehicle or trailer plug when wiring it. Are you facing the front of the vehicle or the back of the trailer? Facing the rear makes your diagram backwards. Keep making these helpful videos. 👍👍

Such a great job Dustin. Man you nailed it.. Now I have a request for you to do a video, Without adding any extra wires either. Change a 4 wire connector on a trailer to a 7 pin wire trailer and everything still works fine. The only thing I can remember when seeing it done was he ended up placing the two brown wires on one screw terminal. Everything else was almost if not exactly as you do a regular 7 pin hookup to a pig tail. Now how about a great diagram and video as the 7 pin hookup was for this 4 wire to 7 wire and pin hookup, and still have everything working. Thanks you are the Man!!!!!!!!!!! Doug

Follow this video bud. 4 wires are: Yellow: Left stop/turn Green: Right stop/turn Brown: running lights White: ground The only reason you'd have 2 wires is if you had double Brown & White wires to run down both sides of the trailer. You're still only using 4 terminals.

Lots of great advice-Thanks! The reverse circuit can be used for 2 other things- to power a WiFi camera on the back of the trailer (back up lights help these cameras a lot at night too) and to pwoer a back up warning device. (On a car you can use the back up light circuit to power the camera.)

Or mounted lights for backing at night😁
I bought a replacement plug after wearing mine out after having it fall out on a road trip and dragging on the ground for who knows how many miles. What kind of crazy world is out there?
Thanks for doing this video! It made fixing my trailer so much easier. Great job explaining everything
Thank you, thank you my brother for being so plain and thorough with explaining the wiring. You used common sense which is not so common. Again, thank you.
Thanks man, this video helped me to got a disaster wiring on a trailer corrected within 45 minutes.
Great illustrations and easy to see. Thanks!
Thank you you are the only one who speaks to surge / hydraulic brake set up, no one talks about Boat trailers? No need backups lights on boat trailer Aloha
You are freaking awesome, thank you for taking the time to make your videos!!!
Thank you, this video saved my husband in a situation. We truly appreciate your video.
Very helpful - thanks! Wiring up my trailer today!
4yrs later, Thank You Sir! 6months go I spent almost a whole day matching different color wires only after initially crimping every wire thinking I had it. Now new project and found this video very informative.

Thanks. 40 years old and I learned alot.
Thanks, rewiring a plug today and I'm defiantly using your info to fix my car trailer wiring!
It is very clear anybody who messes up after your video should be kept away from trailers. Thank you very much.
Thank you ! Much appreciated... just what I needed
Thank you for the help You make sense out of it where others don’t
Thank you for making an easy to understand video, outstanding job!👍🇺🇸

Appreciate the knowledge and the crash course, Thankyou.
Literally the only video that made sense thanks man!
Nice clear video, I bought a set of temporary/emergency lights and had to replace the 7 Pin plug as it just didnt fit in the socket all the way, not sure why. It was wired the exact opposite of your diagram, the ground was on the right side of the plug and so on. It was a little confusing until I watched your video and figured it was all opposite wired.
Thank you! Very easy to understand and not intima dating.
You Just helped me hooked up a camper for a big event very much appreciated!!
This is still the best video for wiring. Thanks
Excellent explanation! Thank you!!
Best trailer 101, I've seen, Thank you
It is a good thing when someone knows what they are talking about. Gets to the point. While effectively passing that knowledge on to others.
Perfect. Calmed and just great explanation
I know this post has been up for awhile but I really appreciate your post and thank you for the information!!!😄
Excellent description on how it works thank you..
Thanks for the video, makes understanding 7 pin simple easy!

Thanks for the tutorial!
Good info! Thanks so much for this video 👍
Thanks Man I appreciate it I'm wearing my new car hauler for reverse lights , like you said it's hard to see at night at the tracks
He explained it just perfectly and it works
Great idea to have a ground to each individual light, that insures that no more lights going out individually because of a bad ground. Awesome.
It is clear and simple thanks alot. Good video.
Awesome video man, I’ve dealt with some dandies already. Like all black wires and trying to decipher plugs and yea. Awesome video.
Big help, and very well explained. Thanks
Thank you for posting this - we’re a body shop and we’re fixing a 2021 Silverado that got hit in the back and everything got ripped off the trailer connector- thank you
Thanks for the video. Thanks for the great tip on grounding. Redundancy is always a good thing when it comes to safety.

Thank you. A great, informative video
Thank you very much !!! Very helpful
Awesome explanation....Thank you!
It doesn't hurt that usually the plug it self has what color goes where, but thanks for your in depth explanation. : - )

How you doing nice and basic straight to the point. Keep up the good work
Thank you!!! I screenshot your diagram for future reference. So good.
My black or purple is actually light green on my 2004 Silverado. Darker green of course is the right turn as you stated.
Excellent explanation. 1000%. Amigo. Now I new come over and do my in the middle of the road. Just kidding. Bless you and your family.
THANK-YOU VERY MUCH , THAT WAS AN AWESOME VIDEO. NICE JOB MATE !!
Thank you! it helped me a lot, i have a f350 2006 that doesn't work, and my Rv needs those lights working, i can't find out what's wrong with it, but your video helped me to understand the wiring better.

Thanks. Yeah I also made a "how to diagnose a plug layout" video to help with Chinese & non typical color codes. But it doesn't get near the views this does.
Great video! You obviously know what you are talking about.
great job, both in presentation and content.

Great video. Thanks.
Perfect video man
Such a great job Dustin.

OK Dennis I got all the other reply accomplished. I still have a Red Wire And a Blue wire left over. My Utility Trailer has electric brakes. I have no more wires coming from my trailer to match up with these. How do I connect the Blue Wire to What already has been done to have Elec. Brakes. Then there is the red wire from the 7 pin also left over - Where does it connect to, with only the 4 wires coming from the trailer. Thanks very much...I have got to have this done by next Friday afternoon as I am going to pick up a farm tractor 3 states away from me and going to need everything working fine.
