Well the opener didn't go as planned, but we still had some fun. I got some repairs to do, then I will be back on the water.

Dielectric grease helps with corrosion and moisture as well ,awesome video and clean installation

Straight forward installation. I think I have all the parts I need except the broken stool. Good tip on disconnecting the circuit when not in use for long periods. Now that that’s done, go setup the pool (behind you)….summer’s coming ya know! 😁👍

More or less that's the way I installed a 5,000 lb. Power Wench to my old Silverado and when I got the 21 Silverado I transferred the cable system. Now several things different was taking the negative all the way to the battery and my battery has several positive terminals to hook extras to. For extra line protection I used 1" PVC split accordion tubing cable tied to channel the wires all the way to the rear connector....After 17 years the Wench and supply line work like a charm!!😎👀🎣

Most boats probably don't need one, but I have a very heavy boat and it was a real pain to wind it up by hand. This make it so easy. Thanks Kevin.

@@GoMidwestFishing And how do you like that brand winch? Most of the amazon reviews are displeased with them. How is it holding up?

You should use flexible tubing to prevent the pluscable from burning if it gets damage. Otherwise ot looks good.

Good advice. A conduit around the wire will definitely help.

Randy, it’s been my finding at all the boat winches on the market are pretty much no good I would suggest if people go to Harbor freight or to one of the other tractor supply other places that sell truck whinges, off-road winches and use them to pull their boat up I did this 10 years ago I got a 5000 pound boat and I bought a 6000 pound winch. I had no problems since today I put it in and I never have a problem bringing my boat on the trailer, the only problem I’ve had is that the rollers on my trailer can’t take the punishment and I have to replace them all the time. I don’t know if the government approves it. I’ve been doing it for at least 10 years and not had a problem and my vote always loads right up , thank you for reading and your videos a good video

I wondered if an off road winch would work on a boat trailer. I'm glad you had good luck with it. So far my boat winch has been holding up well.

Really helpful and comprehensive vid, amigo. I'd only suggest some cheap plastic conduit to run those wires through - over time, the wire insulation can be worn away by the movement of the truck, and you can wind up with dangerous and/or inconvenient shorts. Goodonya.

Have you have a seven post plug at the back of your truck for your camper? You also can pull power through the positive lead that is there that’s how I do it use it to recharge the battery at the front of the trailer while I’m in route to the place Where we’re going fishing or boating

Hi. Thanks for the tip. Yes, I have a 7 pin connector. The reason I don't use it is because the amp draw on the winch is too much for the small wires in the connector. That's why I run a heavy gauge wire back to the battery.

@@GoMidwestFishing I think he's saying that he uses an extra battery on the trailer for the winch, and uses the hot lead from the 7-pin connector to recharge the battery.

Hi Ed. My brother worked at a wholesale warehouse that sold outdoor goods. He got me this one at cost, so that's why I went with it. It is a StrongArm TW4000. You can see more about it here: amzn.to/3X4jGDy I've been happy with it so far. I have a really heavy 18ft boat, and this one works well, but if I did it again, I would have gotten the 9000 version for a little more pulling power.

Great video! As a reminder for comment readers when running any wire against a frame rail or a any other rub point protect the wire. Whether that be a garden hose scrap, vacuum line scrap, a lot of tape, rubber grommet on rub point etc etc. something NEEDS to be here. As you drive everyday the insulation can slowly wear away. Leaving bare wire to metal…. Metal that happens to be a ground for the same system that hot is now feeding. Just something to consider. Even if you circuit break it when not in use that wire still has rub points. I’d be willing to bet if there was fuel on the ground, trucks wet from dropping in, sparks and arcs occur while it’s parked and a fire could ensue. Or a fire could ensue during transport. Just a friendly reminder all! He may have even done this but didn’t film. I just wanted to share. Again, great video! Jealous your mounting point for the winch in line to the eye was so convenient. I’m still “fabbing” the included bracket. Aka relief cuts and mediocre welds lol

Thanks for the informative video. I've been all over the internet trying to sort out the circuit breaker to use on my boat winch with zero solid information. My winch draws 200 amps max and comes with preinstalled 10 AWG wire. No fuse/breaker. I followed your advice and ordered the quick connect, wire, and circuit breaker through your links. I am using 4 AWG for a 15 ft run to the quick connect and don't know which breaker to use. Any advice? Additionally, what, if any fuse/breaker would you recommend for the 10 AWG wire from the back of the vehicle to the winch? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hello Michael. I'm glad it helped. The breaker is there to protect the wiring, so its a matter of what size wire you use. The breaker should disconnect before your wire melts. I see you are using 10 AWG wire. I'm not an expert in that area, so I'm hesitant to throw out numbers, but I would start by looking up amp ratings of your wire and then get a breaker that's slightly less. Good luck with your project.

@@GoMidwestFishing Thank you Sir! Decided to go with your suggestion by using a circuit breaker to shut the system off when not in use and to prevent fire in the event of a dead short. The winch manufacturer responded that the motor is internally fused. They do not recommend a fuse on the pre-installed 10AWG wire. Really appreciate your help. Regards, Michael

I believe I used a 60 amp, but your winch is bigger. The circuit breaker is actually to protect the wiring, so it really depends on what wire you use. Make sure the breaker trips before your wire melts.

I wired my winch into my 7 pole plug.

What is the recommendation for a batte type / group size 12:54 for a 10,000 lb 12v trailer winch? Manual says 650 amps cold crank power.

I'm not sure what the recommended size it, but I always get the biggest one I can. No one ever complains about having too much power, and you really don't want to get stuck with a dead battery.

Glad I came across this video, so I did a setup identical to this but did everything you've said not to lol, and it cost me much more than I wanted to spend, I feel like onthe second go around I did things correct however the winch still isn't operating to its full potential. ( if I set it up in front f my vehicle it works great but that long run to the rear really making it struggle, my battery shows anywhere from 12-14volts so I feel lost but really need this setup, any other suggestions?

Sorry to hear that. The only thing I can think of is that your wire gauge isn't big enough running to the back of your truck. DC current doesn't like long runs, so you need a heavy gauge wire to run that far for high demand items like a winch. It could also be a bad connection where you put the connector end on the wire. I'm not sure if you used the same quick connect I did, but they work pretty good. Check the voltage at the end of the wire to see if the 12-14 volts makes it all the way to the winch.

@Go Midwest Fishing thanks for the information will check voltageat end, I believe the wire themselves on the winch are 6 guage so that's what I ran to the rear. Yes I also used those same quick connectors they are great, I'll check that voltage and go from there, appreciate the quick response

@Go Midwest Fishing so I just tested power at the rear end, without truck running it was 11.3 and with truck running t was 13.2. Was hoping for a different outcome because the easy solution would be to get bigger cable now I'm even more😠

I believe my winch is 4500 lbs and I was using a 60 amp switch. The switch is mainly there to protect the wiring, so it depends on the size of your wire. You should be able to look up amp ratings for different size wires, and get one that will pop before your wire melts.

Do you have one question for you can't you use the trailer power Not sure if that would work . great info my friend thank you

If you are wondering about using the power that comes off the plug for the trailer lights, that will not work. The winch draws a lot of amps and would burn right through those wires. That's why I ran a dedicated 6 gauge wire just for the winch. Great question. Thanks John.

By grounding the negative to the frame, its using the metal in the frame as a wire. Since the negative terminal of your battery is grounded to the frame, there is no need to run a negative wire all the way back to the battery.

Question, would there be enough power from the 7 pin connector for it? Have a 7 pin to four pin. I can wire being a mechanic.

I would not try powering it from the 7 pin connector. The winch has a very high amp draw, so you need a bigger wire for it. Your 7 pin connector has smaller wires designed to power lights.

Thanks for the info. I left the circuit breaker tripped so there was no voltage on the wire.

Why not just split it into the trailer connector below the hitch

You need a heavy gauge wire to carry the high amps the winch draws. Your trailer wires would melt with that kind of load. Good question though. Thanks for the comment.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but if you want to know if you can run power from your cigarette lighter, the answer is no. The wires going to it are much too small.
