Hey Rick! Thanks for Asking! When we talk about something and do a full review, we do recommend it. We will not talk about something that we won't recommend. We will tell exactly what we think, what we like and don't like about the product. Honesty is a must! Toyo Gsi-6 is in our top 3 of the best winter tire you can get. See you on the lake this summer, check out for a green Kawasaki Jet Ski ( not a lot of them there ).

Not sure: The tests were only on a flat surface, this looks easy to move forward. Tryst me in the highlands (e.g. Austrian Alps but for sure also the Rockies) you need to negotiate gradients with 10, 20% or more. And I don't always want to put on chains.

I had Toyo Winter tires on my Mazda 3 GT manual hatchback. I was able to re-sell them 200$ CAN after 6 Winters...Now I had the regular and older Toyo Observe in 16'' for higher weights, but normal/city/highway version in Québec. Your Alberta/British Columbia Rockies application might require the ''studded'' version, which is the: Toyo Observe G3 Ice.

Thank you for making this review. Merci beaucoup. Considering the winter tires you know and tested yourselves, which are your top two recommendations for La Belle Province or for me, ici en Alberta (snow, ice conditions), for my l 2020 Chevrolet 2500HD LT using 265/70R17, with 121 load rating? Would it be the Nokian Hakka 10 (if it’s offered), the LT3, the Toyo GSi-6 LS, Blizzak DM-V2, Michelin X-Ice or other?

I’ve had Toyo observes, Gislaved, Hakkas and some other winter tires over the past 40 years and by a slim margin, Hakkas were my favourite until the past 7 years or so. On both my vehicles, I now had two different models of Hakkas on my Corolla and mid sized SUV. Both have moderate to sever dry rot/cracking in the tread grooves and sidewalls. One set of R3 SUV only had about 6,000 winter kilometres on it and was on my new SUV. The other had about 24,000 kms with severe cracking in the tread grooves and all over the sidewall. This has never occurred before with my summer or winter tires over the past 40 years. Proper storage on winter rims and inflation always. I’ve tried reaching out (as my tire supplier) to Nokian (North America) customer service since May and sent them photos and have not received any reply. Now it’s Sept and I do my seasonal changeover end of October and I will not put these cracked tire on again. Both sets of these problematic tires were Made in Russia and all my previous Hakkas were Made in Finland without any issue

@@alanf5351 thanks Alan. Mine are made in Russia too; I wrote to local Supplier that I won’t buy them again if they’re still made there (boycott). I’ll watch for dry rot etc. And I will consider other winters as well (many are getting better and better). Robert from Alberta.

@@nhlcfl7733 You’re welcome. According to Nokian press release, they permanently closed their factory in Russia. That’s good but with not getting any responses since May, I think they lost a customer forever. Too bad as their winter tires are very good in winter weather. I will now stay away from any tires made in Russia and likely China as well.

My preference and purchase next month will be GSI-6 and GSI-66 HP for the SUV. The Toyos are Made in Japan where quality is usually a lot higher as compared to SOME other plants in SOME countries. So pre-mature dry rot and other issues should be less of an issue. The DM V2 only has two circumferential grooves which usually will not disperse water as quickly as a tire with 4 circumferential grooves or tries with a V-tread directional pattern mounted in the correct rotation pattern. So hydroplaning may be more easily achieved with the Dm V2 in similar circumstances. The Dm V2 also does not have a solid/connected centre rib in it’s tread design. This can add to road noise but more important can affect straight line driving especially at higher speed such as a highway and driving expansion joints. Tires without a centre continuous rib MAY be a bit harder to keep straight. However the Dm V2 MAY be a bit better on ice. I loved Nokian Hakkas until about 7 years ago and again now when the set of tires for both vehicles that were now Made in Russia would crack within 6,000 kms of winter driving and no response at all from the manufacturer/customer service for 3 months about my warranty claim. Apparently Nokian has stated due to the war in Ukraine, they closed that plant but I cannot support them due to the fact they have not once responded to may warranty claim sent to them with several photos and receipts.

Thanks. You are correct. Just after my experience with the few set of tires not made in certain countries having very premature dry rot cracking, I’m now reluctant to try any tire not made in certain countries usually known for their high quality given the cost of 4 tires and no replies to warranty claims.

I just bought those for my 2007 4runner 4wd and, so far, those are the worst tires I ever owned. The tire's thread gets packed with snow and offer little to no traction when braking on street corners. On ice, they are absolutely useless!! I experienced a mild winter storm, and I regretted that I did not keep my snow peak rated half worn A/T tires...
