Totally agree. I tried a rye crimson clover radish blend last year for the first time and deer loved it. It's much more tolerant to heavy browsing than anything else. I'm in northern Minnesota.

100 percent! Not sure why more people don’t take advantage of this amazing seed. I’m glad my neighbors don’t. I used to go 100 percent rye. Since my soil has improved I now plant brassica and or a candy crop next to my rye. After candy crop gets browsed down I overseed with rye. I strongly suggest Jeff Sturgis no till method of using buckwheat planted in summer and rolled over fall annual seed and terminated. Results are as good or better than till methods.

Great, now I have to clean out the back of my truck. I just over planted Winter Rye on my food plots ( December in SC ) to add more food and because it grows so fast with only 3 week till the end of our season. I am hoping for a nice boost at the end of our season. Rye is not used around my area in the south so we will see how well it will grow next year when I plant in September. Thanks for the video, now i'm going to wash out my truck.

You are totally rite it's king! , I've been planting winter rye for several years, it's easy to grow weather no till or tilled ground. I also like mixing tillage radish in my rye, has been a killer combo in my plots. Thanks for sharing ur vid , good info!

I wonder if perennial rye would come up again each year without having to reseed? This is my first year to try rye but I know it's a perfect cover crop for cattle in the winter.

Totally agree. I planted winter Rye south of Tucson Arizona and deer came out of the woodwork from who knows how far. I do have pictures of deer bedded in my grass eating while they are bedded down

I was hoping you covered whether it is drought tolerant. I'm in Wyoming prairie country.

I prefer mix wheat and rye, about 2:1 as wheat is much more attractive. Rye is there for soil improvement, wheat there for attraction. Rye by itself was a poor to fair attractant. My soil is decent though.

I just disk up 1/4 acre today and put out about 25lbs of rye. I'm tired of the Throw n Gro plots not coming up because we're too warm in South TX til December. I see people say rye is worthless and deer don't eat it but I'm gonna try it because I know rye comes up easy and thick.

Yes many of the seed blends are 60-90 percent rye grass NOT cereal rye. HUGE DIFFERENCE. You do not want rye grass.

Make sure that about 15% of the bean leaves have turned yellow. Broadcast before a rain and it will grow!!

My deer prefer winter wheat and Austrian peas over rye. I like it for the soil qualities and diversity it offers the deer.

You don’t want height out of it. Once it gets high the deer don’t like it. If its not getting browsed you should probably mow it down for the fresh stuff

Deer will walk over ryegrass to get to anything else, and as far as your pH if your pH isn’t right it’s not as desirable night and day. it may grow but they’ll walk over yours to get to the next man’s 6.7-7pH ryegrass😉

I know because deer don't eat ryegrass. Winter rye grain is a cereal crop. Ryegrass is not the same.

What about arid country like Wyoming? How much rain does it need? I have plenty of alfalfa, but I need a winter food source. We only got one or two significant rains this summer. The only time we get decent precipitation is early spring but it's too early to seed winter rye.

It needs some moisture to get started. Heavy rain is not necessary. Drilling it into the soil may be a good approach. Another approach would be to plant buck wheat in the spring when frost date has passed. Spread the Winter rye into the standing buckwheat, crushing and spraying the buck wheat after you broadcast the Winter rye. The dying buck wheat will hold any moisture like a mulch layer allowing the rye to take hold.

Actually nothing stays #1. It’s only #1 when the deer are eating it. After 1st frost Alfalfa is dead last until spring.

I’m not a fan of it, but I’m also not scared to use it when needed and used according to the label. Once things get established and you are planting year round, you can get away from using it. I use it on new plots for sure and will use it on plots that the weeds keep coming back. I also treat tillage the same way.

You can use a good weedeater or mow it down short instead of chemicals. I’m planting cereal rye, vetch, and triticale in a mix.

Marvin Baier I mow short every time, weeds keep coming back year after year. If glyphosate is used according to the label and minimally, weeds are taken care of and you can still have healthy soil. I don’t want 100% of my weeds gone as the deer eat them too, but sometimes a species is out of control and it takes more than just mowing. For all the bad reports you see on glyphosate, there are just as many showing that, when used properly, it has no ill effect on the soil. Hence me saying use according to the label and minimally. I still have healthy plants, animals and more than my share of soil biology. Some of the same people/groups/universities saying that round up is bad, also have studies and test showing that it doesn’t harm things when used like it is supposed to. It’s when it is used every single year and is mixed heavier than the label suggests, that causes the issues.

Winter rye is cereal or grain rye. The rye grass is't really eaten by deer. I learned this through trial and error when I used to buy the food plot mixes offered by the big companies. Those companies often use them as fillers and leave you with very little of the good stuff. This was obvious to me when my food plots used to be eaten down to the dirt and all that remained was rye grass. There are a lot of good seed companies out there where you can buy seed separately and make your own mixes with 100% of want you want and what deer prefer.

Crimson clover is far better than rye.

@@gd3160 deer wont even touch it here. Ive been planting food plots for over 25 years. Ive planted everything imaginable. We farm for a living and have the land and equipment to plant whatever. Ive planted all the cereal grains and deer will hardly touch them. Clover is by far superior here. Im aware that severe frosts and freezing will turn them brown but it will not kill it. There are clover varieties developed for northern regions now if you didnt know. We plant clover in pennsylvania and dont have a problem. Youve probably fallen into the brassica trap too.

@@Dougarrowhead been planting since 2006. I live in Western PA. Anything I've planted they eat. I don't have room for brassica or anything that requires great sunlight. I plant food plot trails. My strategy is to funnel deer past my stands. I only own 12 acres. I maintain some of the thickest cover in predominantly farm country. The bedding is the key for me on my specific land. I do plant white ladino clover where I get enough sun. I have total shade in spots, so winter rye is my go to crop. They eat it. I have trail cameras that show that. That's my experience. We have no problem seeing deer. I like perennial clovers. Any clover variety tips?
