Correction! I meant to say baseball size by the time a frost hits. Not the time hunting season starts. Sorry!
Right on Dave. I think I'm 55 days out here right now in WI. Planning to plant this weekend. Not planting my rye until early September.

August 6th in southern NY brassica went in ground , forecast=5 days of on/off thunder/rain showers… NOT one drop fell from the sky the 7th -11th 😬🤦🏻♂️🙁 … but at least my frost date is OCT1st & and wasn’t too early !! Love your stuff Dave 👨🏻👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you appreciate that. I used to turkey hunt up in northern NY. Pretty area
Hey Dave, great video I couldn’t agree more but in my neck of the woods near the UP border we can expect a frost anytime after Labor Day. I plant my brassicas end of July and no matter how mature they get the deer eat every last scrap by end of November. In fact due to being in big woods area my deer will hammer them no matter how big they get!

Yes for sure that’s why you can’t go by a date you go by 45-60 days before frost that’s going to change it could be your planting in July like you said. My old pa property was big woods and they ate everything. Ag areas would be slightly different. Main point is for the majority of people don’t plant to early and make sure the conditions are right. 🤙🤙

Northern Michigan I plant from July 7 to 1st of august. Always have great brassica plots. All about timeing with the rain. Every year I plant just before a down pour an deer hammer them all way into late February. They produce alot food for deer

That planting date is close to what it should be. Each area will be different point is 45-60 days before frost (generally) for best results
Near my area we had guys who planted early and they popped up . Yet we had such a rare heat wave of 90 plus every day with no rain it killed them off. Now they are replanting the same time as everyone else in my area. That sucks , but lesson learned.

That’s right. Always lessons to be learned
Here in South Central Indiana Im going to wait until maybe the 20th - 25th of august to plant my brassica’s plots looking good and are ready for plotting can’t wait until October 1 come on bow season

Awesome that’s when our season starts as well
I plant several brassica plots in north central WI and struggle to find the time to get them all in. I planted my less desirable stand locations a little earlier, and I planted my prime spot this past week due to the forecasted rain. I also overseeded the location I did the week b4 due to lack of rain after initial planting. The earliest plot I planted was also the smallest and gets the least sun, which were factors in my decision to plant that 1 first. Maybe I planted a little early, but fingers crossed. And in the past I've overseeded winter rye in Sept if I had concerns about the quality of the plot. I spend way too much money on seed!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

Definitely. You can always save a plot really up to about 20-25 days before hard frosts with wheat or rye
60 days before frost here in MO is Aug 15th. Looking to get planting winter wheat/rye by the end of the month for Nov hunting.

Perfect that will be good timing 👌
Yea i'm not planning to turn my beans in until the last 2 weeks of sept(rain depending) to plant my buck forage oats. Had that fear of missing out and caved in to peer pressure last year. Learned my lesson and won's make that mistake again. That's money i'll never get back.

Good info. Where i live the deer will not touch the bog leaf stuff untill after 2 or three frosts. Would the liquid fert make them want to eat them more. That was a beautiful feild btw.

It can for sure I’ve seen it become more attractive and palatable after spraying because you are creating a more nutrient rich plant. But there’s also a lot that goes in to it. Pressure on plot, what they are eating at that time of year etc
July 25th-1st August my big n beasty goes in. Any later the bulbs don’t get big enough to amount to anything.

I have a small property in the middle of a 400 acre low fence ranch in Texas hill country. What’s the best time to to attempt a plot. ? What’s a good mix. Any strategies or recommendations would be much appreciated
Dave, you have been my source of success for years now thank you! I have a question, I got a good deal on W.I. Destination, I also purchased domains hot chic and comeback kid, would these do ok all planted together? Thanks for all you do

Hey mark , I’m in Leesburg va thinking about getting my plot going this weekend. You mentioned your in Maryland just curious as in what area it would be a small world if I’ve been that way. I’m planning on planting domain Big sexy and hot chic. Do you think it’s too soon since we are on the same area?
Be careful on saying to not plant in July. A lot of guys in my area would never get bulbs if they waited until august to plant! East Central MN

Nothing to be careful of lol. Don’t plant until 45-60 days before frost. Weather that’s in July or August doesn’t matter. That’s going to change state to state

This will be my first year hunting and doing a plot. I watch your videos and they are all super informative. One question though, in South Louisiana we don't really get a real frost and the land is swampy/moist, whats a good seed to plant for southern deer?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

I’m not 100 percent familiar with that area but if you give me more info I can still Lead you in the right direction. How big of plot? Soil tested? Big woods areas? What’s the average temps through the hunting season?

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors the club has 12-13 stands on 1500acre. Each stand has to do a 1/4 acre plot, have not tested soil yet but I have the sample jars and and instant ph tester. Its in a wooded area near blood river (between the rain and the river im assuming that's why the land is so moist). Average temp down here is highs of 90's lows of 70's on a rainy day.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors throughout the season its probably highs of 80's and lows of 60's. I will be planting domain hot chic in my plot and I want to do something else in the family stand plot next to mine. Im unsure if there is and ag in the area so I don't know what else to plant.
We r talking about animals who's lives revolve around levels of nutrition & timing instincts for survival. They eat what they need & crave balance. One thing I noticed is that the fly season here in central MN is one of those things related to timing. It's OK if you're doing prep for a fall plot & the horse, deer & black flies r surrounding u while making your life miserable. This starts around Memorial Day & peaks during the longest days of the year. It's still can be bad during the dog days of late July. But around that time with the days getting noticeably shorter the intensity of flies goes down. If u r planting brassica & the flies r bad u r too early. We had temps in the 50's last Thanksgiving week just a couple of weeks after record heat in early November. In between then the plots were getting hammered when we had frost in the mornings. Early November here is when u want peak growing & eating. Not early October. I will be planting here in the next few days. We had 2 rains less than a week ago & I took advantage of that by spreading 🍀 in my areas that r more like pasture, not a plot that I will be targeting towards those times when the deer r craving tonnage & something different.

@@grantgemlo7348 Yep, trapped beaver & hunted bear in that area. Much different soil than I plant in. You're right on time planting that end of July. I like about 10 days later than that but I will wait a few days to get that germination rain & the warm weather that folliws. Usually doesn't get as hot down here in late August into September.
