Winter Olympics: Lillehammer '94 (PC/DOS) 1993, U.S. Gold

Ойындар

An ok game based on the 1994 Winter Olympics tournament at Lillehammer, Winter Olympics by US Gold includes a decent variety of events, but not nearly as good as Accolade's better-known-although-without-official-license Winter Challenge.
The graphics are adequate, but gameplay options are lacking: you can't practice in any event before the tournament since the game offers only 2 options: "Full Olympics" and "Mini Olympics." The events are fairly standard (e.g. skiing, shooting), but they are much more difficult than Accolade's game due to awkward and unresponsive control schemes. Some events are notably better than others -- perhaps a result of them being coded by different programmers.
Overall, Winter Olympics is a decent game that is worth a look for Olympics fans, but won't hold anyone's interest for long. - Review By HOTUD

You need to hold down ctrl and left arrow in the speed skating from what I remember. Nice to see WO94 again, used to love this game on the PC

I remember playing the Genesis version on Sega Channel back in the ‘96. Cool to see the differences.

I animated a lot of this, I dont know what version of the game this is but it looks horrible here because you are not seeing the Amiga "square pixels" and all the Anti-Aliasing that smoothed out all the jaggies? is missing? I dont think it is even the old low res PC version? At that time the PC pixels were not square, and resolution was very, very low and PC Pixels were sort of elongated vertically and stretched the graphics out but here there is no smoothing or Anti-Aliasing at all so I wonder if it is a "console version" ?, anyway I promise it looked lovely on the Amiga lol I did all the animating including the the boy and girl country & flag selection animations and all the opening ceremony, I remember my boss saying to me "we need a thousand of white doves" I said Just how are we going to do that! but we did manage it I ended up creating the large doves you see hear as large 12 frame sprites and then layers of the same doves in smaller and smaller versions, the final ones were just a few pixels wide and it looked good, In this version there are only about 6 doves lol I also did the downhill skier, but I lost a lot of frames of animation because they didnt have the space but once again he looks very choppy and jaggy here, he really doesn't look good at all MY friend Chris painted the most beautiful mountains, it took a long, long time to do pixel by pixel, all by eye, it was fabulous We then we had a visit from U S Gold who informed us Lilyhammer didnt really have mountains at all , just big hills, The guy said "Just knock the tops off", we just looked at him in disbelief it was heartbreaking He is still even today the best "bitmap" artist I have ever seen None of us had been skiing so we worked from photos and videos of events from the past { and I watched old movies of downhill skiers and wore some skies while looking in a long mirror {lol} To get the movement of the little girl a very creative artist named D.J. actually stood and made the round motion, trying to do it like we thought a little girl would, DJ was about 6 feet tall and quite heavily built but we managed it, that's how we had to work then lol Great to see even in this poor version again but it was a horrible job, working on computer games was very low tech back then {but well paid for some of us} , Compared to what they have now it appears prehistoric but I still love to see "sprite animation", it was all Art and less Math. I still have my beloved Amiga 1200 {a whole I MEG and 20 MEG hard drive lol, I could never part with it. I hope this has given you a little look at to how it was then

Hi! Great to hear this story. I never had Amiga back in the day, but i played few times with them on my friends place.. I had Commodore 64 in 80's then i moved onto PC user late 80's thru early 90's so my greatest memories are with PC's. Mostly on PC's DOS resolution were CGA then EGA 16-color with 320x200 or 320x240 resolution or Super Vga 640x480 until 90's PC-VGA graphics cards came. All looked better on CRT Monitor, interlaced the graphics to fit to the screen, now on LCD's all looks like crap and choppy! Even this captured/recorded footage is upscaled from 320x200 to HD with nearest neighbor graph filter so image is not anti aliased! Played with DOSBox. I though that the game must be a bad PC port by U.S Gold from Amiga version but according to the Mobygames site PC version released 1993, and Amiga 1994? - mobygames.com/game/winter-olympics-lillehammer-94/release-info

Amiga was really huge between 1987 and 1994 in the Western Europe of over 20M userbase. Amiga's userbase was bigger than SNES and Megadrive userbases combined. The only console that found solution to crack into the PC market in Europe was PS1. It showed how much capable it was on a affordable level for consumers. And from the start it could do more than PC why many games weren't ported to PC. This exotic architecture continued into 6th gen, while graphics improved for 3D but we would eventually get to a point where 3D has been maxed out. This current gen was a clear point it was pointless to bring out new game consoles because they were pretty much PC out of the box. Even 1st party could port to PC now. So when Mark Cerny finds a solution in the I/O design to break down the bottlenecks Ken Kutaragi did with PS1 we are back to exotic architecture. Technology that a average person don't fully understand. It's about to sell to devs, consumers will get what devs cook. So it's more important to be relevant to devs. Always listen to devs what they wish for. Make the platform easier and less costly to make games for. That was one of the killer features of PS1 back in the day despite having the superior hardware in practice of its time. Sega went with MS strategy to be a powerful machine for current game design instead of let devs come up with new game design and new gameplay. 3D was on the horizon to eclipse 2D's domination for the past 20 years. This thing of 10 years of efficient gameplay innovations started by PS1 and PS2 followed suit with evolution for 3D. After that gen nothing has changed in the game design, neither has gameplay. PS3 was too hard to develop for, Xbox 360 was easier but it was also a lot like a PC. For PC enthusiasts who cares less about consoles and the hardware console war they are always interested in to see the gaming industry move forward. If a console would push to the next level beyond what we have now it's clear nothing has changed for 20 years. Something Coreteks brought up about world economy thrives when revolutionary technology gains. Game changer helps the market to grow again. Excitement around consumers does also help variety to thrive in the games library. Genres that have been dead for more than a decade will come back in a refreshing way and genres never seen before will be born.

I find it amusing that the SNES version of this game, had more events and was much easier to play. Rarely were console ports ever better then their the PC counterparts at the time, but wow, this takes the cake with how the console versions of this were better.

They really went all out with the graphics, and only focusing on five events compared to the wider selection in the SNES edition.

В игре очень плохо реализована стрельба из положения стоя в биатлоне. Очень тяжело поразить мишень при таком страшном мотании прицела туда-сюда. А вот другие виды спорта показаны куда как реалистичней и зрелищней.
